Brian Kelly and his LSU Tigers were ranked No. 15 overall in the first version of the College Football Playoff rankings for the 2024 season, which means they are at least three spots out of where they need to be to make it in the new 12-team format.
Kelly was asked during the weekly head coach’s SEC teleconference about his thoughts on where the team stood now heading into the final stretch of the season. Sure, there’s some disappointment to be expected, but Kelly doesn’t seem to mind that much.
At least for now.
“There’s so much football to be played the first ranking is the horses getting into the gate,” Kelly said. “It would be nice to be No. 1, but there is a lot of racing ahead of us. You have to play well the remaining four weeks of the season.”

LSU’s next matchup on the schedule, a contest in Tiger Stadium against the Alabama Crimson Tide, is largely viewed as a must-win game for both teams if they are to have a shot at the playoffs. After that game, LSU will close out its slate against Florida, Vanderbilt and Oklahoma, in that order.

“Every game becomes a playoff game,” Kelly said. “It will be important to focus on one game at a time and be the best regardless of the competition.”
