A 73 year old man from the Nang Rong district in Buriram province was hospitalised after consuming raw pork salad with fresh blood. He experienced vomiting, bloody diarrhoea, and extreme weakness.
A concerned relative discovered him and contacted emergency services yesterday, January 9 for immediate medical attention. His condition remains critical at Nang Rong Hospital as doctors await detailed diagnostic results.
Jakrit Ruamkul, an assistant district officer, visited the home in Thaen Banlang village, where traces of meal preparation were observed. Raw pork and pig blood were found in the fridge, and blood stains were present throughout the house, likely due to his symptoms. Health officials have been contacted to investigate further and collect meat samples for examination.
The elderly man’s niece, 58 year old Sai Mung explained she visited him at home after he failed to respond to calls. She found him pale and weak, reporting symptoms of vomiting and bloody diarrhoea since the previous night. He had prepared the dish using meat purchased from a local market.
Sai Mung immediately called the emergency number 1669 and told them about his symptoms. It was also noted he had difficulty hearing at the time. Within 20 minutes, emergency medical staff arrived to transport him to the hospital. Though his condition has improved slightly, doctors have yet to confirm whether it is a case of streptococcus suis infection, commonly known as pig ear disease, or another illness. He also has underlying health issues such as gout and consumes alcohol.
Thong In, the man’s grandson-in-law, mentioned that he lives alone following a separation from his wife several years ago. His children work in other provinces, but relatives occasionally visit. It is known that the man bought raw pork to prepare the dish, consuming it alongside alcohol, reported KhaoSod.
Raw pork dishes are a popular, though controversial, aspect of Thai cuisine, especially in certain regional dishes. This leads to significant health risks due to potential contamination with harmful parasites and bacteria.
