Drivers face new 20 mph speed limit in certain locations as regional slow zones are launched under ‘Sammy’s Law’

A NEW traffic law has been introduced that will force drivers to lower their speed from 25 to 20 mph in certain locations.

Sammy’s Law will enforce a strict 20 mph speed limit along a 19-block stretch in Brooklyn‘s Prospect Park West neighborhood, from Grand Army Plaza to Bartel-Pritchard Square.

The new law, named after 12-year-old Sammy Eckstein, who was killed in 2013 by a speeding driver, went into effect on Wednesday.

“A driver’s speed can mean the difference between life and death in a traffic crash, so the speed limit reductions we are making will help protect everyone who shares our busy streets,” Transportation Commissioner Ydanis Rodriguez told Gothamist.

“I want to thank Amy Cohen Eckstein and Sammy’s entire family for their tireless advocacy to give New York City the legal authority we needed to reduce speed limits.”

The law will enforce a 20 mph speed limit along the 19-block stretch and 10 mph on streets undergoing safety-related redesigns, the outlet reported.

The Department of Transportation will implement a regional slow zone in Lower and Upper Manhattan next.

In Upper Manhattan, drivers will see the new speed limits implemented along a 1.4-mile stretch of Audubon Avenue in the Washington Heights section.

And by the end of 2025, the department will enforce lower speed limits in 250 additional locations across the city.

The first locations to see the new speed laws will include schools, open streets, and shared streets.

“Without Amy and Families for Safe Streets, the group she founded in response to Sammy’s tragic death, we would be here today – honoring her son’s memory and preventing other families from experiencing the same grief of losing a loved one to traffic violence,” Rodriguez added.

“Yesterday marked 11 years since my 12-year-old son was run over and killed right here on Prospect Park West,” Gary Eckstein, Sammy’s father, said.

“If traffic had been moving more slowly, Sammy and the driver of the van would have had more time to see each other and avoid a collision.”

‘TERRORIZING THE COMMUNITIES’

Meanwhile, lawmakers aim to crack down on brazen drivers performing dangerous stunts on public streets in Suffolk County, New York.

The illegal car meet-ups occur throughout different parts of Long Island’s Suffolk County, where reckless drivers take over intersections, performing burnouts and donuts.

The dangerous tirade prompted lawmakers to draft a flurry of stiffer rules, including ramped-up fines and seizing cars from the road.

The enforcement will be carried out by members of the task force that investigated the Gilgo Beach murders and the case against accused serial killer Rex Heuermann.

“They are terrorizing the communities,” State Senator Anthony Palumbo said of the car meets.

Brookhaven Supervisor Dan Panico added, “These cars are being used as weapons on the roadway, spinning around recklessly with a disregard for human life.”

In Miller Place, in the Town of Brookhaven, an ambulance carrying a patient having a heart attack was blocked for 15 minutes due to the illegal car meets.

If an emergency vehicle is blocked, police would have “the ability to seize the vehicle and really have a heavy hand so folks won’t do this,” Palumbo said.

Suffolk County Police began impounding vehicles seized at car meet-ups in 2022.

A year later, at least 111 vehicles were seized.

How to fight a speeding ticket

According to a legally reviewed post, there are five effective strategies to fighting a speeding ticket if it was wrongfully issued.

  1. If pulled over and issued a ticket, drivers can argue or dispute a driver’s personal opinion. When issuing a speeding ticket, an officer is required to write their opinion and come to an “objective” conclusion. If the ticket was written based on that judgment, it can be contested. An example would be if you were going 75 mph in a 65 mph zone because others were traveling at the same speed, you could argue that it would be more dangerous to travel at 65 mph.
  2. You can dispute the officer’s presentation of evidence. If you were ticketed for something like running a stop sign or making an illegal u-turn, you can’t contest that if an officer saw you, but you can call things into court like eyewitnesses, diagrams, or photos.
  3. Argue that the ticket was issued by a “mistake of fact.” This is tricky, but a “mistake of fact” is a mistake made by a driver about a situation that was beyond their control, or if a driver legitimately did not know they were violating the law. For example, you were driving in two lanes because the lane markers were so worn down that you could not see them.
  4. You could say circumstances justified your driving. You could say you were speeding to pass a possibly drunk driver, or avoiding an accident by rapidly changing lanes. However, the argument won’t work if there’s proof you continued to speed after passing.
  5. Similar to the above, it could be argued that speeding was necessary to avoid harm. The key is to argue that if you weren’t speeding, you or someone else could have been harmed.
  6. Consult a traffic attorney, if all else fails. Many have free consultations to decide whether or not there’s a case.

Amazon Prime makes strong TNF NFL statement to Donald Trump and Kamala Harris over decision no other network does

And adverts for their respective republican and democratic campaigns are running on US television leading up to the polls.

NFL games typically dominate television ratings – meaning they have most eyeballs on them.

And they have become prime spots for both Trump and Harris to campaign for votes.

The commercials have been seen on networks such as Fox, ABC, CBS and NBC.

But Amazon Prime confirmed its stance on campaign messages.

Political commercials are against the company’s guidelines and will not feature during NFL games.

Amazon policy bans adverts that are, “Political, such as campaigns for or against a politician or a political party, or related to an election, or content related to political issues of public debate.

“During an election year we prohibit media products about a specific political party, issue, or candidate.”

Amazon holds the rights to Thursday Night Football and three more live NFL games before the election on November 5.

And fans on social media loved hearing the news that they won’t be seeing campaign ads while watching football.

“Everyone needs to do this,” one said.

“Those ads are so annoying. Rare Amazon Prime W,” another posted.

A third said, “Major W tbh. It’s good to have a few hours without the noise.”

While a fourth also added, “W everyone needs to do this.”

Amazon’s NFL games averaged 11.86 million viewers in the 2023 season.

That is down from the average of 17.9 million – which includes a lot of games on free-to-air networks.

This year’s TNF opener between the Miami Dolphins and Buffalo Bills averaged 14.96 million viewers.

That made it the third most-watched NFL broadcast in the streaming service’s history.

Amazon is in year two of it’s deal with the NFL for Thursday Night Football.

The US election, meanwhile, is set to go down to the wire between Trump and Harris.

Singer El Taiger shared cryptic post days before he was fatally shot in forehead & found in blood-soaked Mercedes-Benz

BELOVED reggaeton star El Taiger posted about “dying alone” in a now-heartbreaking video just days before he was fatally shot in the forehead.

Cops are still hunting for the killer who shot the 37-year-old rapper and left him to bleed out in a black Mercedes-Benz.

On October 3, El Taiger, whose real name is Jose Manuel Carbajal Zaldivar, was found suffering from a deadly gunshot in a hospital parking lot in Miami, Florida.

He was raced into the hospital and survived for nearly a week until he tragically died from his injuries on Thursday.

Detectives found El Taiger in the back of the blood-soaked car and determined that he’d been murdered.

Now, they want to talk to Damien Valdez-Galloso, 49, about the shooting and are offering $5,000 to anyone who can tell them where he is.

Little is known about the events that led up to the shooting, but those close to El Taiger have deemed it a “senseless violent crime” in a statement shared on his social media accounts.

“El Taiger was pronounced dead and is now reunited with his beloved mother in heaven,” the emotional message said.

Days before the shooting, the rapper shared a cryptic video of himself driving on Instagram and captioned it, “Never forget.”

In the video, he kept a straight face while a voiceover said, “We’re born alone, and we die alone.

“And this world places a lot of obstacles that make us forget that. But I never forget.”

Heartbroken fans were moved by the now-tragic message and flooded his comment section with emotional condolences.

El Tigre had a massive following, amassing 1 million Instagram followers and hundreds of millions of streams on Spotify.

He released a song, El Punto, days before he was shot.

INVESTIGATION LAUNCHED

Fans and family members are desperate for an answer on what happened to the singer, but cops have little to share.

What they do know is that the shooting didn’t happen inside the car, and they’re investigating where it took place and why he was driven to the hospital.

“Someone drove it there, left it and left on foot,” Miami police spokesperson Mike Vega said.

Last Friday, SWAT teams were seen outside Galloso’s home, but cops still haven’t found him.

The person of interest has a dark criminal past, as he had sex with a minor and was registered as a sex offender, according to records seen by NBC affiliate WTVJ.

He’s also served jail time for false imprisonment and was arrested for grand theft in 2021.

“It’s vital […] to secure the assistance of the public at large to make sure we’re able to get justice for El Taiger,” Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales told reporters Monday.

RAPPER MOURNED

A crowd of mourning supporters gathered for a vigil outside the hospital where he was found to sing and pray in his honor.

“He was my friend,” Jonathan Esponda told Fox affiliate WSVN from the spot where the singer was found fighting for his life.

“He was big for our community, really big in our community.”

Another fan, Daniel Andran, said, “Really important for us, because his music, he made a change.”

In the statement shared on Instagram, El Taigre’s team thanked fans for the music and said, “These last few days have been incredibly difficult for those who loved him, and the support received from around the world has meant a lot.

“Turn up your music, dance, and celebrate your life.

“The Taiger was the feeling of the people, and now we must keep that feeling alive through their music and their legacy.”

Travis Kelce preparing for Taylor Swift to move in as NFL star builds huge underground man cave in $6m mansion

TRAVIS KELCE is stepping up plans for Taylor Swift to move in by adding a massive man cave to his mansion.

The underground development on a $6million home he bought last year will send speculation soaring that he is ready to propose to the singer.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce spend loads of time at the mansion
Talk of an upcoming proposal has been swirling

Kelce’s mum Donna dropped what fans reckon was a big hint by answering “You never know” when quizzed about the couple getting engaged.

Now the NFL legend is expanding the six-bedroom property where Taylor regularly stays.

The Daily Mail say the Kansas City Chiefs star is having a 396-square-foot section built, including space for an in indoor golf simulator.

The basement floor will be dug up and lowered by two and a half feet.

Construction staff are said to have begun excavation work this month, with phase one expected to be finished by December.

Kelce’s mansion is in a suburb 20 minutes south of the Chiefs’ Arrowhead Stadium.

News that he has swung into action with a man cave complete with golfing options comes as The Sun revealed his partner Taylor is being offered a cameo role alongside him in Happy Gilmore 2.

Kelce, 35, has already agreed to Hollywood A-lister Adam Sandler’s request for him to appear in a sequel to his 1996 cult movie classic.

Girlfriend Taylor was described as “really excited” about his upcoming role – because the couple are big fans of Sandler’s films.

However, it’s believed she is less sure about playing a part herself in the golfing comedy.

As for Kelce, our insider says he’s been “taking acting classes for months”.

So maybe, once his man cave with its sporting extras is complete, he can claim he’s working from home!
