Jeopardy! star Mark Fitzpatrick admits he got his ‘butt whooped’ as rival ‘had him on the ropes’ before winning 5th game
DESPITE winning his fifth straight Jeopardy! game, champ Mark Fitzpatrick admitted he ‘got his butt whooped’ after his impressive opponent ‘had him by the ropes.’
Though it looked like Mark’s victorious streak may have come to an end tonight, he still came out on top and boosted his five-day total to over $107k.
On Thursday’s game, the content manager from Connecticut went up against Mike Obstgarten, a test-prep coach & tutor from Henderson, Nevada and Cynthia Bullock, a nonprofit executive from Colorado Springs.
Throughout the game, Mark and Mike swapped leads with one taking it over from the other several times.
Mark came out strong with an early lead at the first break with $2,600 and Cynthia with $2,000.
Mike blew his earnings and had just $0 by the end of the first round.
However, he quickly earned a hefty by the Double Jeopardy! amount with $3,600 – though Mark had already worked his way up to $5,000.
The lead then turned back to Mike however, Mark was able to grab it back when he got lucky on the board.
Mark swept all three Daily Double categories – adding $1,000 to his score with the first clue.
He got the second one correct on a true Daily Double, increasing his score by $6,100 while the third find gave him another $3,000.
Going into Final Jeopardy! Mark had accumulated $18,600 while Mike fell behind after a few pricey mistakes with $12,800.
Cynthia, who remained in third much of the game, had $4,400 going into the final round.
After three straight games where the Final Jeopardy! ended in a triple stumper, the curse was finally broken as Mark and Mike got it right tonight.
“More than 25 cast members from this 1990 film drama would later appear on an HBO series with a similar theme,” host Ken Jennings read of the final clue under the Movies category.
“What is Goodfellas?” was the correct response, which only Cynthia missed.
JACKPOT!
Mark wagered $7,001 to walk away with $25,601 – marking his five-day at $107,201.
The final score for Mike was $12,800 while Cynthia left the game with $1,400.
Mark’s win was extra significant as it made him the first season 41 contestant to qualify for Tournament of Champions.
Commenting on the game after, Mark wrote: “Wow! I got my a** whooped!”
“Please. It was like watching a Rocky movie. Seeing you on the ropes only to pull it out at the end,” a fan assuringly responded.
“Mike was very strong! He had 20 correct responses to Mark’s 18,” someone pointed out.
Other viewers made note of how cutthroat the gameplay was tonight.

Jeopardy!'s next Tournament of Champions will take place this winter, midway through Season 41 (exact airdate TBA) and it's shaping up to be another showstopper. Here's who is officially eligible so far:

“Great game. Mike had Mark on the ropes, but that Ahab/Ishmael misstep potentially cost him the game, since Mark found DD3 on the very next clue (and there weren’t many places left it could have been),” a fan said.
While another noted: “A good and competitive game for today. But yeah the incorrect answer from Mike allowed Mark to regain control, find the Daily Double an get the lead.
“Although the bet from Mark left more to be desired. And the game turned into a classic two third game scenario, thus going all in or making big bets in FJ would be a horribly bad wager.
“Mark made the standard cover wager, correct move on his part. Hopefully Mike can get a shot at Second Chance if there’s one. Now that Mark finally won his 5th game, can he wrap up the week with a victory?”

Female journalist ‘dies in Russian detention’ after mysteriously going missing in Ukraine
A FEMALE journalist has died after spending more than a year in Russian detention, claim Ukrainian officials.
Victoria Roshchyna, 27, mysteriously disappeared last August while reporting from inside Russian occupied Ukraine with officials now saying she has tragically died as Vladimir Putin’s prisoner of war.
Roshchyna’s family first reported her missing to Ukrainian officials on August 12 last year after not hearing from her for days.
The journalist last spoke to her sister a week earlier as she said she had made it through routine border checks to get across Russian land but didn’t disclose her location.
An official missing person case was then filed on September 21.
The esteemed Ukrainian reporter was missing for over 6 months with her whereabouts finally revealed in April 2024 when her worried father was sent a letter from Moscow.
Russia‘s defence ministry said Roshchyna was being held at a Russian detention centre, according to Ukraine’s main journalist union.
The reason why she was arrested and subjected to months of imprisonment has never been made public.
The exact location of the jail has also been kept underwraps by Russian officials.
Her death was first announced by Petro Yatsenko, a spokesman for Ukraine’s prison of war coordination headquarters.
He said: “Unfortunately, information about Victoria’s death has been confirmed.
“It is too early to talk about the circumstances of the death, we are working to establish them.”
Press rights group Reporters Without Borders say they are “shocked” over Roshchyna’s death.
Russian news outlet Mediazona have claimed she may have died when she was being transferred to Moscow from a prison in Taganrog, near to the Ukrainian border.
The 27-year-old was also caught up in Russian aggression in March 2022 when a group of Kremlin spies reportedly kidnapped Roshchyna just hours after her car was shot at.
Victoria claimed at the time that Russians fired at her vehicle and forced a group of press to abandon the car and lie down hiding in a field.
After returning to the car some time after and continuing on with the trip across southern Ukraine Roshchyna was allegedly taken by the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB), her colleagues said.
She was released after 10 days in captivity.

Roshchyna worked as a freelancer for various independent news outlets in Eastern Europe.
These included Ukrainska Pravda and the Ukrainian service of US-funded media outlet Radio Free Europe.
In 2022, her frontline reporting was honoured when she received the Courage in Journalism award by the International Women’s Media Foundation.
Roshchyna is just one of thousands of Ukrainians known to be held in Russia after they opposed to Moscow’s iron fist ruling.
Many have been detained in Russian occupied territories since Putin’s full-scale invasion in February 2022.
Rights groups say some have faced torture and abuse at the hands of their captors.
Back in May, Ukraine claimed more than two dozen media officials are being held in Russian captivity.
The country are in negotiations to free those still locked up.
Many other Russian prisoners jailed on bogus charges have been released this year.
A huge 24 person swap deal between the US and Russia in July saw journalists, military officials and foreign opposers to Putin’s regime freed in exchange for Russian prisoners.
Those rescued included former US marine Paul Whelan and British-Russian journalist Vladimir Kara-Murza.
The most notable person was Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich who had spent 491 days inside a horrific Russian penal system on trumped up charges.
Northern Lights seen across the UK as stunning photos show the aurora lighting up the night sky
THE Northern Lights have lit up skies across the UK with colourful hues dazzling onlookers.
Breathtaking photos of the stunning natural phenomenon, also known as aurora borealis, were captured across the country by Brits.
The Met Office said that the viewings were likely in Scotland and Northern Ireland and possible in the north of England and the Midlands.
However, thanks in part to relatively clear skies, they were visible for huge numbers of Brits well beyond this.
The beautiful lights could be seen as far south as London.
The lights also spotted further north in Lancaster by Professor Jim Wild, 49, who captured the Northern Lights from his back garden.
The academic, who researches the aurora and space weather at Lancaster University, said: “My research focuses on the physics of the connections between the Sun and the Earth.
“Over the years, I’ve been to the Arctic Circle several times to make measurements of the aurora, but it’s really special to see the northern lights from your back garden with your whole family.”
People are advised to use a long exposure camera to capture the auroras, as the phenomenon is not always visible with the naked eye.
The UK has seen more of the Northern Lights in 2024 than in many recent years.
Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere around the magnetic poles.
As they collide, light is emitted at various wavelengths, creating colourful displays in the sky.
The Met Office said relatively clear skies were forecast for much of the UK, creating a “decent chance of visibility”.
A spokesman for the forecaster said there had been “more space weather events in recent months”, including the Northern Lights, because the sun was nearing the peak of its solar cycle.
Met Office spokesman Stephen Dixon said there was a chance of some visible auroras across parts of the UK on Thursday night and into the early hours of Friday.
The auroras on Earth, which are most commonly seen over high polar latitudes but can spread south, are chiefly influenced by geomagnetic storms which originate from activity on the Sun.
The sun works on a cycle of around 11 years called the solar cycle – with peak sunspot activity on the surface of the Sun referred to as solar maximum.
Sunspots give the potential for Earth-directed releases of large bursts of energy, called coronal mass ejections, which can lead to aurora visibility.
Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere around the magnetic poles.
As they collide, light is emitted at various wavelengths, creating colourful displays in the sky.
There have been several mesmerising displays visible from both sides of the Atlantic already this year.
But flares and solar eruptions can impact radio communications, electric power grids, navigation signals, and pose risks to spacecraft and astronauts.
Auroras – how do they work?
Here's the official explanation from Nasa...
- The dancing lights of the auroras provide spectacular views on the ground, but also capture the imagination of scientists who study incoming energy and particles from the sun
- Auroras are one effect of such energetic particles.
- These particles can speed out from the sun from giant eruptions known as coronal mass ejections or CMEs and solar flares, explosions of radiation on the sun.
- After a trip toward Earth that can last two to three days, the solar particles and magnetic fields cause the release of particles already trapped near Earth, which in turn trigger reactions in the upper atmosphere in which oxygen and nitrogen molecules release photons of light
- The result: the Northern and Southern lights.
