Sentences given to paedophiles caught with child abuse images to be reassessed in victory for The Sun’s campaign

SENTENCES given to paedophiles caught with child abuse images will be reassessed, in a victory for The Sun’s Keep Our Kids Safe campaign.

A landmark review into how offenders are punished will be announced today by the Justice Secretary as she faces a prison overcrowding crisis.

The Sun’s Keep Our Kids Safe campaign has called for offenders found with the worst category of images to be jailed[/caption]

Our campaign has called for anyone found with the worst category of images to be jailed.

It reflects concerns over the suspended sentence given to disgraced newsreader Huw Edwards.

Former Lord Chancellor David Gauke will chair the sentencing review.

Judges could be given the power to sentence lags to serve their terms under house arrest and technology such as smart watches could be used to monitor those on probation.

Mr Gauke said the review would explore what punishment “should look like in the 21st century”.

It comes on a day when 1,100 more criminals are being released early to free space in prisons.

Justice Secretary Ms Mahmood said: “We have an opportunity now to reshape and redesign what punishment outside of a prison looks like.”

She added: “I believe in punishment. I believe in prison, but I also believe that we must increase the range of punishments we use.

“And that those prisoners who earn the right to turn their lives around should be encouraged to do so.

“The Sentencing Review will make sure prison and punishment work – and that there is always a cell waiting for dangerous offenders.”

Labour’s worker reforms will cost British firms £5bn a year and risk job losses, Government analysis reveals

LABOUR’S worker reforms will cost business £5billion a year and raise the risk of higher prices and job losses, the Government’s analysis shows.

Nearly one in five companies will have to react to the cost burden by cutting their workforce.

Angela Rayner planned overhaul of worker reforms will cost business £5billion a year and raise the risk of higher prices and job losses[/caption]

The overhaul by Deputy PM Angela Rayner and Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds includes changes to sick leave rights and a ban on zero-hours contracts.

One in ten employers may end up cutting workers’ pay, analysis of the Office for National Statistics data shows.

It also suggested 40 per cent would most likely raise their prices, risking a return of inflation.

The alternative is businesses losing profits by absorbing costs.

The party acknowledged smaller businesses would face a bigger hit, despite ministers arguing against exemptions.

The Government has said it would “consider mitigation”.

Analysis showed the largest annual bills could be £1billion for ending zero-hours contracts and another £1billion for improving sick pay.

Ms Rayner said yesterday: “We said we would get on and deliver the biggest upgrade to rights at work in a generation and the growth our economy needs and that is exactly what we’re doing.”

Shadow Business Secretary Kevin Hollinrake is urging FTSE 100 bosses to raise their concerns about Labour’s package of regulation.

And Neil Carberry at the Recruitment and Employment Confederation said: “Today’s impact assessment shows the cost impact will fall on firms who are already facing a wide range of other rising costs.”

Winn-Dixie is closing location for good with liquidation sales up to 50% – store warns exact last date to use rewards

SOME Winn-Dixie customers have little time left to get some of their favorite items for a massive discount.

A location is closing for good next month, and liquidation sales are underway.

Aldi will soon replace the Winn-Dixie after a deal earlier this year[/caption]

Shoppers near the Winn-Dixie location in Gulfport, Mississippi, will soon see it shutter its doors.

The last day of business is scheduled for November 10, according to what employees told The U.S. Sun.

Additionally, Winn-Dixie rewards points must be used by the day before closing, November 9.

Deals as high as 50% off on select merchandise are going on right now, and customers must act fast while supplies last.

It’s also not all grim news for local shoppers.

While the Winn-Dixie is no more, it will be instead replaced by an Aldi, per the SunHerald.

Aldi acquired 400 grocery stores from Southeastern Grocers, Winn-Dixie’s parent company, in a deal that was finalized in March, per a press release.

The deal saw Aldi putting in $9 billion to add 800 additional stores across the nation in the next five years.

RETAIL RE-ORGANIZED

Some of those locations would be brand new, and others would be part of conversions through around 400 Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores Aldi gained.

At least 50 stores were selected for conversions in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, and, of course, Mississippi for the end of 2024 to re-open in early 2025.

It seems the Gulfport location was chosen, along with a nearby location in D’Iberville, which closed at the end of August.

A statement from the store at the time confirmed that it would re-open as an Aldi in a few months.

Aldi’s deal also noted 330 brand new locations planned across the Midwest and Northeast and a few West and Southwestern areas like Arizona, California, and Nevada.

Even with the conversions, some Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets will remain under their banner with all the changes, including several in Florida.

Converting Aldi Stores in Florida

After Aldi acquired Southeastern Grocers earlier this year, several Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket locations will be converted into Aldi stores.

Some conversions have already begun in Florida, and The U.S. Sun has compiled a short list of known stores converting so far.

  • 5805 Manatee Avenue West, Bradenton (Winn-Dixie)
  • 2880 Howland Boulevard, Deltona (Winn-Dixie)
  • 1545 County Road 220, Fleming Island (Winn-Dixie)
  • 2261 Edgewood Avenue West, Jacksonville (Harveys Supermarket)
  • 6902 South Florida Avenue, Lakeland (Winn-Dixie)
  • 2157 West 23rd Street, Panama City (Winn-Dixie)
  • 23200 Front Beach Road, Panama City Beach (Winn-Dixie)
  • 2100 West Swann Avenue, Tampa (Winn-Dixie)
  • Undisclosed Winn-Dixie in Pensacola

SOME EXCEPTIONS

“We intend that a meaningful amount of Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarkets will continue to operate under their current banners,” an Aldi spokesperson told Florida Today.

Employees at a Winn-Dixie location in Tallahassee told the outlet that Aldi was only converting stores where there wasn’t already an Aldi available in the area for shoppers.

Converted locations were also being down-sized for “only the items customers need” through a “quick, easy shopping experience with great products at the lowest possible prices.”

Aldi also confirmed it would try to hire back most of the affected employees at converting locations such as the Gulfport, Mississippi, store.

“We remain committed to hiring as many Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket associates as possible from converted stores to Aldi,” the spokesperson said.

Aldi has also caught customers’ attention for other reasons recently.

Earlier this month, it announced its “lowest-priced” Thanksgiving basket offering to help families beat inflation during the holidays.

Some Aldi customers also spotted an orange marking on some products that could mean lower prices.

The Shoals area in Northwest Alabama is looking to grow its community[/caption]

Known as the Remote Shoals Program, certain residents could get $10,000 to live and work remotely in Northwest Alabama.

The Shoals area is collectively known as the Florence-Muscle Shoals MSA and is located within Colbert and Lauderdale counties in Alabama.

Included in The Shoals are four cities — Florence, Muscle Shoals, Sheffield, and Tuscumbia.

There are several advertised benefits to moving.

PERKS

The Remote Shoals Program also emphasized that The Shoals is a short two-hour drive to other major cities, including Birmingham, Nashville, and Memphis.

It’s also only a one-hour flight from Charlotte.

Along with the $10,000 cash initiative to move and get settled, the program emphasized that prospective candidates would have significantly low living costs.

It cited a 2022 median housing price of $204,917.

Additionally, the area has a thriving and diverse population, with The University of North Alabama in nearby Florence.

There’s also a “rich musical, cultural and creative heritage” in The Shoals with famous recording studios and a “year-round lineup of music and arts festivals.”

The Shoals also have plenty of fishing, golfing, shopping, hiking, and nightlife for interested candidates.

ELIGIBILITY

There are at least four crucial requirements interested candidates must meet to get the $10,000 to move and live in The Shoals.

First, they must be 18 years or older and eligible to work in the United States.

They must also make a minimum $52,000 annual income.

Remote Shoals Program Criteria

There are four crucial criteria that candidates for the Remote Shoals Program must meet to get $10,000. Each is listed below:

  • Must be 18 or older and able to work in the U.S.
  • Must make $52,000 per year pre-tax income
  • Must be self-employed or full-time remote
  • Must move to The Shoals within six months

That income has to be obtained through full-time remote employment or self-employment outside of the Colbert and Lauderdale counties.

Lastly, the move to The Shoals must be made within six months after being approved.

APPLYING AND PAYMENT

Applications for the Remote Shoals Program can be made through its website.

Currently, they are paused until March 1, 2025, and will stay open until March 31.

Selections for candidates will then be made by June 2025.

The $10,000 will then be distributed into three different parts.

For initial relocation costs, 25% of the cash, or $2,500, will be given right away to approved applicants.

Another $2,500 is then sent after the first six months of living in The Shoals, with the remaining $5,000 sent after the first year.

The Remote Shoals Program emphasized the opportunity as a “sweet deal that keeps getting sweeter.”
