MYSTERIOUS bug bites have left several soccer players with baseball-sized swelling, sore joints, and headaches.
Doctors are searching for answers to the mosquito-like bites that devolved into painful symptoms.
For weeks, community soccer teams have been playing at Lightning Creek Park in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, without any issues.
But at the beginning of October, after practice, coach Laney Singleton noticed a searing pain in her hand and watched in horror as a softball-sized welt ballooned out.
A jaw-dropping picture of the bite shows her right hand deeply reddened and burning with bee-sting-like pain.
“It leaves a feeling of almost like a flu shot after you get a flu shot,” she told NBC affiliate KFOR.
She later learned that girls on her team went home with similar bites across their bodies that swelled to the size of golf balls or baseballs.
Some girls had headaches after the stings, Singleton said.
The coach and her team are all from Oklahoma, so they’re used to being outside with the mosquitos.
This left them wondering why they suddenly started having such an intense reaction.
Dr. Melinda Cail, a physician in Oklahoma City, looked at the picture of the swollen sores and said they didn’t look at all like mosquito bites.
“Usually, people will get a little bit of swelling and maybe some redness,” she told KFOR.
“But if people are consistently having a big reaction to it, it makes me think it’s probably something else.”
Dr. Cail speculated that a new strain of mosquito could have surfaced but figured if that were the case, then there would be more bites throughout the community.
Only one other person has reported having suffered a similar bite – an employee of KFOR.
Their hand was also massively swollen and red throughout, but he didn’t get bit near Lightning Creek Park.
Dr. Cail said if many people are being left with the sores, then mosquitos might not be the answer.
However, Singleton wonders if a drainage ditch near the field has acted as a breeding ground for the bugs and wants the city to intervene.
Mosquitoes can carry viruses which cause certain diseases like West Nile virus and the viruses that cause malaria, yellow fever and dengue fever.
The mosquito gets a virus or parasite by biting an infected person or animal, then transferring it to the next person through its saliva.
Mosquitos bite during both day and night, and they can live indoors.
There were more than 600,000 deaths from malaria in 2022, according to the World Health Organisation.
Malaria is spread by Anopheles mosquitoes, when they bite people to feed on their blood.
When the mosquitoes bite, they transfer the malarial parasites into the person’s bloodstream, causing them to become ill.
Only the female mosquito feeds on human blood, however.
In exceptionally rare circumstances the disease can also be spread by blood transfusions.
You can take several steps to protect yourself from mosquito bites, including wearing protective clothing, taking preventative medicines and vaccinations, and using insect repellent.

“I’m hoping maybe the city can come out and just treat the fields,” Singleton said.
“We’re really just hoping that our kids can come out and practice in a safe environment.”
While mosquito bites are common, they should be taken seriously.
Mosquitos can carry viruses that cause diseases like malaria and yellow fever.
To avoid bites, people should use bug spray, avoid standing water, and wear protective clothing.

“So I honestly would’ve given it a higher score if there was more of the beautiful dancing you showed tonight,” he told Brooks, 28, and Gleb, 41.
Carrie Ann Inaba, 56, told her she needed to focus on the “in between” moves of her dance, and not just the parts of the performance where she is posed.
Guest judge Rosie Perez, 60, advised her to “incorporate her entire body” and “not just be a neck dancer,” a nod to her famous TikTok videos.
Host Julianne, 36, also had an awkward interaction with the pair after they performed, when she asked: “How difficult was it to focus this week when you take away the chemistry and the romance and all of that?”
Brooks appeared annoyed with the question, and bluntly replied: “That wasn’t hard at all honestly because we’re professionals so we know when to stop the play and get into it.”
Gleb then began to try to speak but Julianne cut him off and said they need to get to the scores.
Their rumba got a 7 from all four judges for a grand total of 28 – at the bottom half of the leaderboard – which appeared to irritate Gleb.
After Derek flashed his 7 scorecard and said it “would’ve been higher” had the choreography been better, Gleb rolled his eyes and was caught saying under his breath “whatever.”
A source exclusively told The U.S. Sun that Brooks and Gleb “were not happy with the judges at all last night.”
“They felt the commentary has been a lot harsher for them than other couples who performed better and do not feel it’s fair.
“They don’t agree with the scores last night and feel it’s a result of how much the show is pushing their relationship. Derek specifically went hard on them and Gleb was annoyed with that, he felt it was unfair.”
The insider continued: ”Brooks knows she can do better and loves this experience overall but she’s talking about quitting the show.
“She won’t, I don’t think she’s actually serious when she says that but she’s mad with how the show is handling things and is mad with how they’re treating Gleb the most.”
“She has really grown to care for Gleb and Gleb has worked on this show for years and they feel they’re disrespectful to him.
“She’s becoming protective of her man. This process has been more isolating and difficult than I think she knew, so him being her rock throughout this brought them close together quickly.
“Her friends are still worried about how it will play out when the season is over but they seem happy now,” the source added.

TNT Sports is set for a massive college season, securing better TV deals than its competitors.
TNT is now the only network to have a stake in the College Football Playoff and March Madness.
TNT Sports, which consists of TNT, TBS, truTV, and Max, won the rights to multiple College Football Playoff games this season.
They also struck deals with the Mountain West and Big East for college basketball coverage.
Many of the biggest sports networks like Fox and ESPN have been dying for control of the college sports market, but it appears that TNT has gotten the upper hand.
“The NCAA, and college sports in general, has always been a priority for us,” Raphael Poplock, TNT Sports SVP of acquisitions told Front Office Sports.
Warner Bros. Discover and CBS had a preexisting deal for TNT to show important college basketball games including Final Four matchups in March Madness.
With the College Football Playoff expanding to 12 teams this year, WBD saw an opportunity to pounce on the market.
WBD also attempted to work their way into the broadcasting rights for the College Football Playoff last year, but ESPN eventually won out.
A multi-network deal was a possibility, but ESPN’s $7.8 billion offer was too lucrative.
Instead, TNT took advantage of the ability to sublicense games from ESPN, adding some of the earlier games of the playoff.
A deal was announced in May that TNT would broadcast two first-round CFP games in each of the next two seasons and two quarterfinals starting in 2026.
“A property like the CFP sits on its own. It’s as compelling as any property in the U.S. when it comes to sports fandom,” Poplock continued.
“That was, frankly, something that was missing from our portfolio.”
To ensure TNT had coverage of college football over the entire season, the network entered into a sublicensing deal with the Mountain West as well.
These deals are a huge boost to TNT after they lost out in the battle to renew NBA broadcasting rights.
They did have deals in place for college basketball ahead of that loss though, signing on with the Big East for more than 50 men’s regular season games and 15 women’s games.

“I think we’re all big fans of the conference,” Poplock said.
TNT is also trying new things with their NBA rights on the way out, broadcasting a fall non-conference tournament called the Players Era Festival.
“I think you have to embrace the chaos,” Poplock said.
“We’re not going to be shy about… continuing to explore other opportunities that could bring more meat on the bones.”
TNT has the rights to NBA games for this upcoming season, then the contract officially ends.
