All traffic is being temporarily held as a result of the incident with congestion carnage estimated to last hours.
Traffic reporting system INRIX says that there is queueing traffic for four miles and debris along the road is causing delays.
Essex Police and East of England Ambulance Service have been contacted in relation to this incident.
Drivers have been urged to avoid the area where possible.

PIERS MORGAN slammed Kyle Walker for his “pathetic” dive in the Manchester derby on Sunday.
Walker dropped to the ground holding his face after clashing with Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund late in the first half.

They were both shown a yellow card as a result.
Fans and pundits slammed Walker for his theatrics at half-time.
United legend Roy Keane even admitted he was “embarrassed” for the England star.
Speaking live on Sky Sports, the ex-midfielder said: “You don’t mind a bit of this, this is going to happen in the game. A bit of argy-bargy, of course.
“But I look at it, he’s obviously been blocked but Walker, of course it’s a foul and a free-kick and Hojlund’s not happy, that’s fine.
“And he goes over, how can Walker… Walker must be embarrassed. He must be embarrassed to go down like that.
“An experienced player, listen there is no contact. Look at this, I don’t know the guy and I’m embarrassed for him. It’s embarrassing.”

SunSport columnist Morgan echoed Keane’s words on social media the following day.
He wrote: “Well said, Mr Keane. Absolutely pathetic from Walker.”
Man City went on to lose 2-1 to their local rivals – despite leading for the majority of the match.
With the hosts 1-0 up by the 87th minute courtesy of Josko Gvardiol‘s first-half strike, Matheus Nunes gave away a penalty for a clumsy challenge on Amad Diallo.
Bruno Fernandes converted the spot-kick to equalise, leaving Pep Guardiola furious.
And just two minutes later, Amad broke through again, this time poking the ball over Ederson before slotting it into the bottom-right corner.
Hojlund trolled Walker with a savage Instagram post after the match.
It read: “Manchester is red. Violets are blue. What a brilliant performance. But the Oscar goes to…”
Man Utd player ratings vs Man City as sensational Amad Diallo turns derby on its head
AMAD DIALLO left Manchester City stunned as he turned the derby on its head.
The flying winger won a penalty, converted by Bruno Fernandes, in the dying embers to level it up.
But the best was yet to come as Amad flicked past an onrushing Ederson before expertly slotting in a dramatic winner from a tight angle deep into injury time.
Here’s how SunSport’s Neil Custis rated the Man Utd players…
Andre Onana – 6
He just does not fill you with confidence. Does not command his area and as we found out midweek in Plzen, his distribution from the back is a major plus for the opposition.
Wasn’t tested that much however.
Lisandro Martinez – 7
Looking a calmer presence under Amorim than he did before when he seemed to want to live up to his nickname from his Ajax days of ‘The Butcher of Amsterdam’.
Great through ball at the end to pick out Amad’s run for the winner.
Harry Maguire – 8
Had a great battle with Erling Haaland which the United man won.
The right call to bring the former captain in for such a big game. Looks like he suits the position in the centre of that back three.
Matthijs de Ligt 78′ – 7
A decent enough performance. Looked more comfortable alongside Maguire than other centre-back partners.
Diogo Dalot – 5
Mistimed his jump to be beaten to the ball by Josko Gvardiol for the City opener. Did not create enough going forward from his wing-back role.
Bruno Fernandes – 8
Missed a big chance after being put through by Hojlund and clipping the ball wide.
But when the moment comes from the penalty spot he is a cool head in the hottest of atmospheres sending Ederson the wrong way to equalise
Manuel Ugarte – 7
Sat in front of the back four and negated much of what Phil Foden was trying to do for the home side.
Noussair Mazraoui 78′ – 8
The best of the summer buys. Used as the right wing back on this occasion and is able to adjust to whatever is asked of him. One of United’s best performers on the day.
Mason Mount 13′ – 6
Looked very close to tears when he had to come off after early in the game. He is just getting no luck whatsoever with injuries and has not had a decent run since joining the club.
Amad Diallo 90′ – 9
The greatest moment of his career so far with a memorable derby winner. A brilliant run first of all to meet Martinez’ pass, he then clipped the ball past Ederson and while it was a scuffed finish he got it on target.
Had almost grabbed an equaliser with a flick header before that which was well saved by Ederson.
Then was alert to Nunes back pass to win the penalty that did lead to United drawing level.
Rasmus Hojlund 78′ – 6
Most we saw of him was a head to head confrontation with Walker when the City player slumped to the ground and a little fall of his own when he tried to win a pen.
But then he provided a great through ball for Fernandes which should have brought the equaliser.
Subs
Kobbie Mainoo 13′ – 6
Did a solid job as he came on in a deeper role than Mount and Fernandes moved forward
Joshua Zirkzee 78′ – 6
Not the man who is going to come on and change a game, but he did well to hold onto possession in the closing seconds.
Antony 78′ – 6
Came on to try and make a difference but is lacking the confidence which a lack of starts brings.
Leny Yoro 78′ – 6
Continues to ease himself back to full fitness after that summer injury.
Victor Lindelof 90′ – 6
No time to have any influence on the game.
I had seconds to tell my sister goodbye on harrowing call after Pret sandwich killed her – I cried for hours on my own
A HEARTBROKEN brother had just seconds to tell his sister goodbye during a harrowing call after she ate a Pret sandwich.
Natasha Ednan-Laperouse was just 15 years old when sesame seeds baked into a baguette from the restaurant giant sent her into anaphylactic shock and killed her.
Alex was 13 years old when Natasha died[/caption]The teen from Fulham, west London, ate the Pret A Manger artichoke, olive and tapenade sandwich she bought at Heathrow Airport not knowing it contained sesame.
She died of anaphylaxis after collapsing on board a flight to Nice, France, on July 17, 2016.
Her brother, who was 13 at the time of the tragedy, has since recalled his last seconds with Natasha.
Alex Ednan-Laperouse, now 21, received a call from his dad telling him to say goodbye to Natasha who at this point was in a French hospital.
The politics and philosophy uni student told The Times: “It was so unexpected, because I was so adamant that she would survive and would be OK.
“I remember having very little time, saying, ‘I love you, Tash. You’ve been an amazing sister to me. Thank you so much for everything’.
“And the phone call ended and I ran upstairs into a room by myself, and I just cried. I cried for hours.”
Natasha had dealt with allergic reactions prior to her death – but sadly couldn’t get the medical care she needed thousands of feet up in the air.
Legislation at the time did not require food made on the premises to display allergen advice on labels.
Under Natasha’s Law all food businesses are now required to include full ingredients labelling on pre-packaged food.
This was brought in in 2021 after Natasha’s parents campaigned tirelessly in the hopes of saving lives.
Tanya and Nadim Ednan-Laperouse previously said they were “absolutely delighted” by the move to full allergen and ingredient labelling.
They said: “While Natasha’s Law comes too late to save our beloved daughter, we believe that helping save other allergy sufferers and their families from the enduring agony that we will always bear is a fitting legacy for her life.”
In that same year, Tanya and Nadim were awarded OBEs in the New Year Honours List for their efforts in changing the law.
I can’t breathe, I’m suffocating, help me Daddy.
Natasha's last words
Her dad said at the time: “These are Tashi’s OBEs. This is all for her.
“When you lose a child, it’s like a bomb goes off. It blasts a hole in your life. The shrapnel from your grief affects everyone around you.
“This happened when Natasha died. We just have to spend the rest of our lives navigating around the crater the bomb of her death created.
“We think, ‘Would Tashi want us to fall off the face of the Earth into grief or do something to make something of her death?’.
“She wanted to try to help the world so we’re going to try to do it for her.”
Natasha’s last words were “I can’t breathe, I’m suffocating, help me Daddy,” before she suffered a fatal heart attack.
Nadim added: “It’s very hard to ever come to terms with but I’ve had to find a way through.
“It happened on my watch. We would die a thousand deaths to have Natasha back.
“Shortly after she died I had the strangest experience. I was not in any way religious but I saw five angels.
“I realised later it was a reassurance that Natasha had gone to heaven and was waiting for me.
“Maybe if I had not seen them I could have ended it all. It kept me on the planet.”
Nadim finally came to terms with not being able to save his daughter after “18 months of grief and anger”.
He said: “I was furious with everyone. All kinds of questions were going around in my head.
“I was swearing a lot. I was in shock, pain and living in a zombie-fied world.
“I remember going into her room and opening the carry-on suitcase she had packed for that trip for the first time and breaking down.
“I was asking myself what I could have done differently and if there was anything more I could have done. That lasted for about 18 months.”
Tanya added: “His misery was so strong. We focused on our son Alex, we had to be strong and there was never any blame. We both loved Natasha and did our very best for her. We stuck together and tried to get through.
“Natasha was a serious allergy sufferer. Ever since the age of four we’d been on high alert at birthday parties as dairy and nuts would give her reactions.
“She’d even get a reaction if someone was wearing perfume. She always checked labels and would never have picked up the baguette if she had any inkling it contained sesame.”
Massive 23ft whale washes up dead on Scots beach as locals warned it could ‘explode’ at any minute
A MASSIVE whale has washed up on a Scots beach but cops are warning locals it could explode at any time.
The huge minke whale was discovered on Irvine Beach in Ayrshire this morning and reported to the Coastguard at around 10am.
It’s not known how the 23ft (7 metres) creature died, but its tongue was distended which happens when decomposition gasses build up and cause the tongue to swell.
Dog walkers and locals using the beach formed a small crowd, keen to catch a glimpse of the whale.
However police were on scene warning people to stand back in case the mammal exploded due to a build up of internal decomposition gasses inside the whale.
Dog walker Margaret Taylor, 64, “It’s quite sad actually seeing it there. Whatever has happened to it is such a shame.”
Local resident Alex Kerr, 47, said: “I heard on Facebook about so I came down to see for myself. It’s a shame to see it dead but it’s quite impressive seeing the size of it.”
Minke whales are the smallest baleen whale species in the UK. can reach up to 35 feet (10 metres) in length and can weigh between five to 10 tonnes.
They are usually found in Scottish waters between May to October and are known to migrate to more tropical waters in winter.
A spokesman for HM Coastguard said: “Ardrossan Coastguard Rescue Team has been sent to a report made at about 10am on 16 December of a whale washed up at Irvine beach.”
HM Coastguard will now liaise with North Ayrshire Council to decide how best to dispose of the carcass.
It comes six months after a basking shark was found on Maidens Beach in Ayrshire.
Locals stumbled upon the stricken creature at the popular beauty spot near Trump Turnberry Hotel and Resort on July 1 after it appeared to have become tangled up in discarded fishing rope.
Basking sharks are an endangered species which are often spotted off the Ayrshire coast in the summer months.
It is the second largest shark or fish, after the whale shark, however, they usually sink when they die, so they are rarely found washed up.

Tesco urgently recalls sandwich filler as it could cause violent illness – check your fridge today
TESCO has pulled a popular sandwich filling off shelves over fears it could make people violently unwell.
A labelling error means the product “could pose a risk to health”, the supermarket chain said in a notice to customers.
Tesco is recalling it’s 10 Cooked Beef Slices because of a labelling error which shows an incorrect use-by date[/caption]Tesco is recalling packs of Cooked Beef Slices after they were printed with an incorrect use-by date, an alert by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) warned.
The date printed on packs was a full month past what it should have been – January 24, 2025, instead of December 24, 2024.
It means that customers could get ill after unknowingly eating out of date food.
“The product listed above has been labelled with an incorrect ‘use-by’ which makes it unsafe to eat after the correct ‘use-by’ date of 24 December 2024,” the FSA said.
Tesco warned customers who have bought 10-packs of sliced beef with the above use-by date not to eat them.
“Instead, return to any Tesco store for a full refund,” it said.
“No receipt is required.”
Customers in need of further information were invited to contact Tesco’s customer service team on 0800 505 555.
You should never eat food past its use-by date, even if it looks and smells inoffensive.
The FSA warns: “Eating food past the use-by date presents a significant risk of foodborne illnesses to consumers.”
That’s because some foods deteriorate over time in a way that can make them unsafe to consume.
Meat products especially – as well as ready to eat salads – can go bad quickly and make you very ill.
Bacteria such as listeria can also contaminate contaminate cooked and sliced meats.
“For food with a use-by date, the ‘sniff test’ is not an appropriate method for testing if food is safe to eat,” the food watchdog warned.
The Cooked Beef Slices have a use-by date of January 24 instead of December 24[/caption]“Food can look and smell fine even after the use by date has passed, but the product will not be safe to eat.
“We can’t see or smell the bugs that can cause food poisoning.”
Symptoms of food poisoning include:
- Feeling sick
- Diarrhoea
- Vomiting
- Stomach cramps
- A high temperature of 38C or above
- Feeling generally unwell – such as feeling tired or having aches and chills
They’ll usually start within a few days of eating the food that caused the infection, but sometimes they can strike after just a few hours.
There are a few telltale signs that indicate your sliced deli meats have gone bad.
Colour tends to be a good indication something has spoiled – a pale grey, brown, or yellow hue mean it’s probably not safe to eat.
Mould also indicates it’s time to toss.
A sour or vinegary scent is also a bad sign, as a slimy, sticky film on the meat slices.
Use-by date warning
The Food Standards Agency provided the following guidance on adhering to use-by dates for food:
- Never eat food after the use-by date, even if it looks and smells ok
- It is safe to eat food until midnight on the use-by date shown on a product, but not after, unless the food has been cooked or frozen
- Food can be cooked until midnight on the use-by date listed on the product and then cooled and kept in the fridge.
- Food can be frozen before the use-by date, but it needs to be cooked within 24 hours of defrosting.
- Consumers must follow the storage instructions on the product, with specific reference to chilling foods
