Best mattress toppers UK 2024; tried and tested

MATTRESS toppers are the single best item to extend the life of a tired mattress or improve the quality of an uncomfortable one.

Investing in a quality mattress topper can truly transform your sleeping experience, offering enhanced comfort and support.

A topper is a game-changer for getting a good night’s sleep[/caption]

Whether you’re looking to rejuvenate an ageing mattress or add an extra layer of plushness, a mattress topper is a great cost-effective solution – especially as it’s cheaper than splashing out on a brand-new mattress.

Topper options are varied, ranging from memory foam and goose down-filled to synthetic or cooling designs that are ideal for sweaty sleepers.

There are a few considerations to make such as your budget and you will need to buy the same size mattress topper as your mattress.

There are specific sizes with elasticated corners or straps that keep them snugly in place and can’t be scaled up like duvets.

The endless choices can feel a little overwhelming when deciding which is the best mattress topper for your needs, and it can be hard to narrow down the right option, so we’ve put some to the test to determine which ones are worthy of your money – and which ones to hit ‘snooze’ on.

Simba Hybrid Essential Topper

Simba Hybrid Essential Topper

Simba Hybrid Essential Topper UK king size, £349

Pros: Significantly more breathable than other toppers I’ve used, comfort is game-changing, support was perfect for my preference, exceptionally comfortable, non-slip base with corner straps, cover is removable and washable, 200-night trial period and 10-year guarantee

Cons: Expensive, does still slide despite straps, king size is heavy if you’re moving by yourself

Rating: 5/5

After testing the Simba Hybrid Essential Topper for a month, I’m thoroughly impressed with its performance.

From the moment I first slept on it, the difference was clear. And if I’m honest, it made the previous topper I’d tried (Soak & Sleep, see below) feel a bit like quicksand, whereas the Simba still felt like sleeping on top of my mattress rather than sinking into it.

The topper’s cooling properties were a game-changer, especially during muggy nights, and the added airflow made a noticeable difference to my sleep.

The topper features four layers including a high-density foam base, Aerocoil springs and Simbatex foam, which collectively provide excellent support and breathability.

It also includes elastic straps and an anti-slip base to keep it in place –although I did notice it still slid down slightly after a few sleeps.

The king size is quite heavy, which makes it a bit cumbersome to move around, but it was easy to set up once on the bed.

At £349 for the king size, it’s certainly an investment. While I might hesitate to spend that much myself, if you’ve already invested in a high-quality mattress, this topper could be a cost-effective way to extend its life.

Overall, it’s revitalized my ageing mattress, making it much more comfortable and supportive – in fact, I’d say it’s completely transformed my sleep experience!

REM-Fit Halo Memory Foam Topper

REM-Fit Halo Memory Foam Topper

REM-Fit Halo Memory Foam Topper, £219

Pros: Very comfortable, sink into it yet feel supported, perfect balance of squidginess and support, designed to enhance airflow, cheaper than Simba, elastic straps, pressure point relief

Cons: None

Rating: 5/5

REM-Fit’s mattresses are award-winning, so I was excited to try the brand’s recent launch, the Halo Mattress Topper, which I’m told is proving very popular on the site.

The topper arrived super vacuum-packed. I almost couldn’t believe it was going to roll out into a king size but lo and behold, it did – and it only took a few hours to settle.

The topper adds a decent bit of height to my mattress, although for reference – it’s not as thick as the Simba topper. The comfort level is impressive; you really sink into it, yet it provides solid support, striking a nice balance between plushness and firmness. It has that slightly ‘squidgy’ feel without being overly soft: the perfect combination for me, personally.

One of the best parts is its affordability – it’s £130 cheaper than the Simba topper, making it a great value for the quality it delivers.

It also features an anti-slip base and adjustable straps, to help keep it securely in place throughout the night, while the cover and mesh borders are designed to enhance airflow. I tried it when the weather had cooled down somewhat, but I can still be a hot sleeper so I was impressed with the breathable feel.

For the price, the REM-Fit Halo offered a significant improvement to my old mattress. It enhances comfort without breaking the bank, and the supportive yet cushy feel has made a noticeable difference. Overall, it’s a winning choice if you’re looking for a high-quality topper that doesn’t come with as hefty a price tag as others.

Emma Premium Topper

Emma Premium Topper UK king size, £515

Pros: Practically like a mattress, washable and flippable

Cons: Expensive, no straps

Rating: 4.5/5

At 9cm, Emma’s award-winning Premium Topper is the thickest of all the toppers tried here and upon unleashing it on my bed – it practically felt like a whole new mattress rather than just a topper.

It did surprise me by not having any straps to secure it in place, which is unusual but not a deal-breaker – especially as I found that it did stay in place.

The topper is much squishier compared to the REM-Fit model (another of my favourites), thanks to its substantial thickness.

I found it to be incredibly plush and sinkable, which created a luxurious, cloud-like feel. For those who prefer a firmer surface, this might not be ideal, as it does have a softer, more enveloping quality. But despite this, the comfort level is off the charts – it’s exceptionally cosy and makes bedtime a real treat.

Overall, the Emma Premium Topper is a great choice if you’re looking for a significant upgrade to your sleep experience and don’t mind a softer, more sinkable surface.

While it may not suit everyone’s preference for firmness (I tend to prefer a bit more rigidness), its exceptional comfort and thickness make it feel almost like a new mattress altogether.

The Mattress Topper Company Seriously Comfortable Cool Revolution Mattress Topper

The Mattress Topper Company Seriously Comfortable Cool Revolution Mattress Topper, £219 (king size)

Pros: Two sides allow you and your partner to sleep on firm or soft side, adjustable straps, cooling and hypoallergenic

Cons: Trying out each side is a bit of a faff

Rating: 4/5

In the process of trying out several mattress toppers for this review, I discovered that my husband and I have slightly different ideas when it comes to comfort – so the fact that this topper allows a personalised experience for two people really intrigued me.

Essentially, the Revolution Mattress Topper is made up of two halves, with each one having a softer side and a firmer side.

The idea is that you try out both sides and can then sleep on your preferred one: genius!

best-mattress-toppers

Lucy Atkins

Now, being completely honest, setting it up can be a bit of a chore, as it involves removing and flipping the topper to find your preferred side.

What lets this down is the fact that there isn’t a zip on both sides of the topper cover, which would make it way easier to flip each one in isolation rather than having to take both pieces out and struggle to wedge them both back in.

With all that effort, I’m not entirely convinced the payoff is worth it. The difference in sides wasn’t massively noticeable, so we ultimately both opted for the firmer side.

However, it was still really nice to have the option of being able to customise.

The gel-infused memory foam and breathable fabric work together to keep things cool and comfortable, avoiding that suffocating feeling often associated with dense foam.

Plus the adjustable straps are a thoughtful addition, particularly if you have a thinner mattress.

They keep the topper securely in place, preventing any shifting or bunching.

Overall – and despite the faff – the Cool Revolution Mattress Topper is up in there as one of my favourite toppers.

It’s ridiculously comfortable and supportive, and I like that it manages to maintain a bit of bounce and movement rather than being an overly dense wedge of foam.

Soak & Sleep 4.5cm Memory Foam King Size Mattress Topper

best-mattress-toppers-tried-and-tested
Soak & Sleep 4.5cm Memory Foam King Size Mattress Topper
Lucy Atkins

Soak & Sleep 4.5cm Memory Foam King Size Mattress Topper, £120 (was £155)

Pros: Super comfortable, supports joints, removable and washable cover

Cons: Not very cooling in warm weather, no straps to stop from sliding

Rating: 4/5

My mattress is generally on its last legs and in need of an upgrade, so putting Soak & Sleep’s mattress topper to the test couldn’t have come at a better time.

I hadn’t really considered trying a topper before investing in a whole new mattress.

But now that I’ve had a couple of weeks’ worth of sleeping on the brand’s 4.5cm memory foam topper, I don’t know why it never occurred to me.

The topper arrived vacuum-packed in a cardboard box and was easy to unroll and place on top of my mattress. It has that classic memory foam smell that can’t be avoided, but I’m sure in time it’ll fade.

The memory foam itself is 4.5cm deep and provides medium support that promises it “adapts to relieve pressure on joints.”

I noticed a difference immediately after the first night of sleeping on it: I had no niggling back pains and aches that I would normally have, and overall I felt incredibly supported by the foam.

The weather has been pretty muggy and humid lately, so the only downside for me is that with such dense foam, it can feel quite hot to sleep on.

After trying other toppers in this review, I’ve come to the conclusion that this one is probably not the best for me as it’s so intensely sinkable and squidgy because I prefer a firmer surface to sleep on.

If you like a really soft and pliable top layer, then this is for you.

La Redoute SO’HOME Microfibre Mattress Topper

La Redoute SO’HOME Microfibre Mattress Topper Duvet & Pillowcase Set in size 150x200cm, £129

Pros: Handy for adding to guest beds, feels like down, light and fluffy, anti-allergy, has straps, stitching keeps the filling evenly placed to avoid lumpy areas

Cons: Won’t significantly change the feel of your mattress

Rating: 4/5

While it won’t drastically alter the firmness of your mattress, La Redoute’s SO’HOME mattress topper does add a wonderfully plush layer of comfort.

The topper has a luxuriously light and fluffy feel, and the microfibre filling truly does mimic down.

I forgot it wasn’t real down when I first put the topper on my bed and was totally fooled until I re-read the ‘just like down’ description.

The beauty of this is that it’s perfect for those who suffer from allergies but want all the cosiness of real down (which has no allergenic properties).

Elsewhere, one of the standout features I found with this topper is its practicality.

Unlike foam toppers which can be bulky and cumbersome, it’s relatively easy to fold away (although it’s admittedly a bit of a pain to squish down, what with all the air).

The handy carry bag makes it convenient to transport or store when not in use, so I can imagine using this topper as an extra layer of comfort on my sofa bed when guests come to stay.

Although the results weren’t as dramatically different as with other toppers, I still found that this one significantly improved the breathability of my memory foam mattress, providing a cooler and more comfortable sleeping experience.

Confusingly, the product name on the La Redoute website says it’s a ‘Mattress Topper Duvet & Pillowcase Set’ but it’s just the topper, so I think there’s an error with the title.

Overall, if you’re looking for a simple way to add a touch of luxury and comfort to your bed, it’s a solid choice.

The faux down filling is lovely and cosy – just in time for the colder months.

Simba Hybrid Double Mattress Topper

‘It completely transformed my sleep’

Simba Hybrid Double Mattress Topper, £379

Pros: Super-comfortable, cooling, supportive

Cons: Expensive, requires deep-fitted sheets

Rating: 4.5/5

Simba’s mattress topper may come with a hefty price tag, but it completely transformed my sleep.

In my experience, it made almost every other mattress I’ve slept on feel inferior in comfort.

As well as rejuvenating my worn-out rental mattress, its cooling effects — thanks to a breathable sleep surface and Simbatex air flow layer — ensured I slept like a baby during the scorching July and August heatwave of 2022.

I found the topper to be incredibly supportive as well, with conical springs that pivot and conform to the body – which kept me really comfortable regardless of my sleeping position.

Panda London Bamboo Mattress Topper

a white mattress sits on a wooden floor in front of a sliding glass door
‘One of the most affordable premium options’

Panda London Topper, £139.95 (UK double)

Pros: Affordable considering its quality, super comfortable, easy to install, reviewers have reported that it helps with back, shoulder and hip pain, wide size range including EU sizes

Cons: Not as cooling as hoped

Rating: 4/5

Setting aside budget models under £50, Panda London’s Bamboo Topper stands out as one of the most affordable premium options I’ve tested.

Installing it was a breeze, especially when compared to thicker alternatives like the Simba Hybrid Topper.

Initially just a few centimetres thick, it takes about 12 hours to expand to its full 5cm size.

This topper boasts Hydro-foam™: a gel-infused memory foam designed to keep your back, neck, and hips aligned and comfortable.

While I personally don’t suffer from much back, neck, or hip pain, other customers have praised this topper online for alleviating their discomfort.

One reviewer even shared: “I have struggled with dreadful hip and knee problems for the last year and in desperation, thought I’d try a new mattress topper before going to the expense of a new mattress.

“Well, I don’t need to bother now as the topper does it all.”

I can definitely attest to its comfort. Despite being relatively thin, it significantly enhanced the comfort of my mattress and improved my sleep quality.

My only gripe is that its cooling properties were somewhat disappointing.

When I tested it in early summer, it made me feel hotter rather than cooler, which was unexpected given bamboo’s natural cooling properties. However, with a bit of adjustment, it was manageable.

Otty Memory Foam Mattress Topper with Charcoal

a bed with a white mattress and a black base
Great for back pain

Otty Bamboo Double Mattress Topper with Charcoal, £149.99 (was £179.99)

Pros: More affordable than other options tested, temperature regulating, comfortable, less likely than Simba to require deep-fitted sheets

Cons: Not much – some have said it slips around on the mattress, but I didn’t experience that

Rating: 5/5

As someone who deals with back pain, I was eager to see if Otty’s topper, priced at just £149.99 (on sale), could rejuvenate my ageing mattress and offer relief.

It’s more affordable than both Emma and Simba’s options, so I was curious about its effectiveness – and I have to say, I found this to be the best value-for-money topper I’ve tried.

Scanning through nearly all five-star Trustpilot reviews, the only slight negative I noticed was that some customers mentioned minor slippage between the topper and the mattress, but luckily I didn’t encounter this issue.

At five inches thick, the Otty topper matches the thickness of the Emma topper (see below), and I had no problems using standard-sized sheets with it.

It significantly improved the comfort of my worn-out mattress and helped regulate temperature, thanks to the bamboo and charcoal infusion.

This feature was particularly beneficial during the summer heat waves.

For anyone seeking a high-quality topper without breaking the bank, I highly recommend grabbing this one while it’s still on sale.

Emma Flip Topper

It’s thick and plush

Emma Flip Topper UK double, £174.30 (was £249)

Pros: Very comfortable, supportive, adjustable firmness, suits all sleeping positions

Cons: May be warmer than your cooling mattress, might require deep-fitted sheets, pricey

Rating: 4/5

With a firm and soft side, the new flippable mattress topper from the ever-popular Emma Sleep offers the best of both worlds, so I was keen to test it out.

Upon unboxing, my first impression was how thick and plush it felt.

It added a noticeable 5cm to the height of my mattress, which caused the sheets to struggle to stay on, constantly pinging off at the corners.

So if you have a deep mattress, you might need to invest in some deep-fitted sheets.

After trying both sides of the topper, I found the soft side suited my sleeping style better. No matter what position I slept in, the topper was comfortable, and it made sleeping on my front much more pleasant than on the bare mattress.

However, as I have a cooling mattress, I found that the topper made it significantly warmer in bed. While this was a bit of a drawback during a heatwave, I imagine it would be a welcome feature in the winter.

Overall, I found the topper to be very supportive, and it significantly improved the comfort of my mattress. I’d recommend it to anyone with an older or uncomfortable mattress, or to those looking to extend the life of their current mattress.

How we tested these products

All mattress toppers were tested personally by our reviewers, who tried them out on their own beds at home to get a true feel of how each product performs.

As well as overall comfort and improvement to each reviewer’s mattress, other factors were taken into consideration including pressure relief, support and general sleep quality.

Durability was tested by checking for wear and tear after a few weeks.

Additionally, we measured factors like breathability and temperature regulation by monitoring how each topper performed in warmer weather.

ASK THE EXPERT: Mattress topper buying guide

We put some of the most important questions to consider when buying a mattress topper to an expert: Theresa Schnorbach, a psychologist and sleep scientist...

How to choose a mattress topper?

Schnorbach said: “I think the main factor to remember when choosing a mattress topper is that while the right topper may help you get a good night’s sleep, it won’t fix an old, tired-out mattress.”

“My advice would be to look out for toppers with washable synthetic fills or naturally hypoallergenic fills. It’s also worth bearing in mind that memory foam and synthetic toppers are easy to keep clean and help keep bacteria away. Wool is also a great alternative as it’s naturally hypoallergenic and washable.”

“It’s also important to remember, that a topper can add anywhere from 1-4 inches to the height of your mattress. So it’s important to keep this in mind as you browse.”

Will a mattress topper help a sagging mattress?

“I find that mattress toppers are a popular option for individuals who are not yet ready to purchase a new mattress but want to improve the comfort of their existing bed,” Theresa says.

“In other words, a mattress topper won’t fix a sagging mattress, but it’s an affordable temporary measure to improve your comfort.”

“I would suggest that If the mattress is more than 8 years old and shows signs of wear, sagging and erosions, then it could be time to replace it”, she continues.

“If the mattress is still intact but its firmness and comfort don’t suit your preferences, then I would suggest this might be a case when a mattress topper could be something to consider.”

Can you wash a mattress topper?

“The simple answer is yes”, says Theresa Schnorbach. “If the mattress cover is removable, you can remove it and wash it in your washing machine. I would suggest warm or cold water on the gentle cycle with mild detergent.”

How to stop a mattress topper from sliding?

There’s a simple hack to keep your mattress topper from sliding — a tightly fitted sheet.

“Look for a sheet that is deep enough to include both the mattress and topper,” explains Theresa.

“You can then tuck in the sheet beneath the bed which will help hold the mattress and topper together.”

Can you use an electric blanket with a mattress topper?

Yes, if you’re getting chilly, you can use an electric blanket alongside your mattress topper. In fact, Theresa has a great tip on how to make the best of the combination.

“I would recommend actually placing the electric blanket between your topper and your fitted sheet,” she says, “which will create a warm environment that is comfortable, without the irritation the blanket can sometimes cause on your skin.”

However, it’s important to take the right precautions. Most newer heated blankets are very safe as they have to adhere to strict safety standards, but old or damaged models could pose a safety risk.

How much do mattress toppers cost?

As with mattresses – in fact, possibly more so – there’s a wide range of prices for mattress toppers.

If you’re on a budget, head to a high-street retailer like Argos where you can find the reasonably priced Silentnight range or own-brand Argos mattress toppers for as little as £22.

At the other end of the scale, you can get a Simba mattress topper from £349, or really splash out on a luxury Tempur mattress cover, which will set you back upwards of £995 at full price.

It’s always important to consider your budget and the quality of the brand you are buying.

It’s worth shopping around in the sales, especially during Black Friday when many great quality mattress toppers are massively discounted.

Where to buy mattress toppers in the UK?

A mattress topper is a slim mattress pad designed to add an extra layer of comfort on top of your mattress.

As well as adding pressure relief and support, it’s intended to help protect the mattress, shielding it from stains and other wear and tear.

Shopping around for a topper is always a must as we all have very different needs when it comes to our sleep

Whether you struggle with overheating or allergies, it’s always important to do thorough research before parting with your cash.

The is a huge selection of brands and retailers that sell mattress toppers, from premium options from Simba and Emma Sleep to high street options available from Argos and John Lewis.

Savvy shoppers are also advised to compare prices online and check retailers like Amazon before purchasing to ensure they are getting the cheapest deal on their coveted item.

What is the best mattress topper to buy in the UK?

There are many well-reviewed mattress toppers, based on different criteria that would determine the best.

We would recommend Simba and Emma for the best quality, comfort and cooling properties.

Both premium brands provide great options that can help update your mattress set-up without paying out for a completely new one.

We rate both the Simba Hybrid Topper and the Emma Flip Topper which have been featured in our guide, and suggest waiting until the brands are on offer to bite the bullet if you are unsure about the full price cost.

Mattress Topper Types

Feather & Down

This is a great choice if you’re after a good mix of softness and support.

Feathers add bulk and support as they are bigger and denser than down (found on the breast of the goose or duck), while it’s the down that provides the softness. Therefore, the more feathers, the firmer the topper.

To prevent the spiky ends of the feathers from poking through the topper, down and feather examples are often made in two sections: the bottom chamber is filled with chunky feathers and the top with fluffy down. Some have a removable top layer for easy cleaning.

If you’re an allergy sufferer, feather and down toppers are probably not for you.

Wool & Silk

Although not as thick and fluffy as a feather and down toppers, wool and silk are a better option if you prefer a firmer base to lay on.

Wool is naturally hypoallergenic and resistant to dust mites, making it perfect for allergy sufferers. It’s also breathable and adapts to keep you cool in summer and warm in winter.

Silk toppers have a super-smooth surface and give a high comfort level and luxurious feel.

Synthetic

These toppers are available in a wide range of firmness and support levels, depending on the thickness of the fibres inside.

Hollowfibre toppers contain less material but are sturdier than microfibre ones, so give the best support of the two; microfibre mattress toppers pack in more fibres and are better if softness and comfort are top of your list.

Good-quality microfibre toppers feel sumptuous, are hypoallergenic, breathable and aren’t as expensive as feather, down or wool toppers.

Memory Foam

If you don’t currently have a memory foam mattress but are thinking about investing in one next time around, try a foam mattress topper out for size to gauge if it will suit you.

Memory foam toppers soften and mould to your body shape to provide excellent support – great news if you suffer from bad back or joint pain.

It acts like a cocoon, so you’re more likely to stay in one place throughout the night and benefit from better, less disturbed sleep.

However, a memory foam mattress will keep you quite warm, so if you tend to get hot in bed, consider lowering the tog value of your duvet to balance your temperature.

New dating show to turn back on raunchy gimmicks to help men find love using a GRAN – & it could have Strictly star host

WE’VE had starkers singles on Dating Naked, while Love Triangle prompted contestants to throuple up to find romance.

But TV bosses have turned their back on raunchy gimmicks for a new show which is in development.

Recipe For Love will see a group of modern men flown out to Italy where a real-life grandma will teach them how to woo a girl the old-fashioned way.

The straight-talking Nonna will turn the lads into lover boys by teaching them how to make delicious meals, host a lady and create a cosy home.

It comes from production company Expectation, the people behind Clarkson’s Farm and comedienne Katherine Ryan’s Parental Guidance.

A celebrity host is not yet involved in the project with execs focussing on casting the perfect Italian grandma to school the wayward boys.

A TV source said: “Recipe For Love is the antithesis of the flood of raunchy dating shows, and encourages a return to old-fashioned values the modern world has forgotten.

“The show is in development now and talks are under way with a number of channels interested in airing the series. No talent is attached, but up-and-coming Strictly hunk Vito Coppola is considered the perfect fit. He embodies all those values plus is very close to his own Nonna.”

The makers are confident the format will work following ITV commission of Date My Nan, a similarly wholesome series that will follow single OAPS as they prepare for a romantic dinner with a potential match.

I’m all for variety in the dating sphere — Davina McCall’s My Mum, Your Dad proved some viewers prefer manners to six-packs.

COMEDY TRIO FOR DAVID

FRESH from announcing his stint on Celebrity Gogglebox, David Baddiel has a run of shows landing on Sky.

Earlier this year, he returned to stand-up after 15 years to reprise the trio at London’s Royal Court Theatre.

Those will air on Sky Arts and Now in November.

My Family: Not The Sitcom was described in 2016 as a “massively disrespectful” celebration of David’s late mother, Sarah and his dementia-ridden father, Colin and saw David nominated for an Olivier Award.

Fame: Not the Musical, which he first performed in 2014, and 2020’s Trolls: Not The Dolls complete the set.

David said: “I was very happy to discover at my advanced age, I remembered these shows well enough to perform them again on stage.”

OFF THEIR SWEDE

THERE was an infamous episode of Seventies sitcom Happy Days when producers – desperate to boost the flagging ratings – featured

The Fonz waterskiing before leaping over the dorsal fin of a great white.

It marked the beginning of the end of the show, and it must have been a similar sensation for anyone tuning in to This Morning, as they’d have seen hosts Cat Deeley and Ben Shephard joining the London Vegetable Orchestra as they played trumpets made from carrots and swedes.

At least they didn’t have to get wet for their “shark jump” moment.

DAISY'S FAMILY VALUES

DAISY May Cooper and her brother Charlie are to reunite on screen for the first time since their Bafta-winning show, This Country.

Charlie is one of the guest stars on series two of her epic BBC One comedy, Am I Being Unreasonable?

Others include Tom Davis, Denise Black, Jamali Maddix and Kojey Radical.

The first series in 2022 was a smash hit with 3.2million viewers and the new run will pick up where it left off, mid-panic attack as Daisy May’s character Nic tries to get away with murder.

Lenny Rush is back as Nic’s son Ollie following his two Baftas for the role.

Daisy May said: “If you thought Lenny’s BAFTA-winning performance upstaged me, wait until you see his performance in series two. You’ll be wondering whether I was even in it. Livid.”

Furious Strictly fans hit out at judges for ‘sexist’ scoring and scream ‘they’ve undermarked THREE contestants again’

STRICTLY Come Dancing fans have been left outraged by the judges underscoring a trio of talented celebrity contestants.

Olympian Sam performed a Quickstep to Natasha Bedingfield’s Unwritten alongside pro partner Nikita Kuzmin.

The pair were supported by fans after something “went wrong” during the live show and cruelly undermarked by the judges.

Sam and Nikita earned 26 out of 40 from the judges, which didn’t go down well with fans.

Tasha and Alijaz performed a stunning Tango to Dog Days Are Over by Florence & The Machine, and but only scored 34.

Punam Krishan and Gorka Márquez only bagged 21 points and ended up at the bottom of the leaderboard.

Annoyed fans wrote: “Punam was heavily undermarked there, as she did not make as many mistakes as before, yet got a score of little difference. I think she’ll be in the bottom 2, but it depends on how Paul does with the Samba.”

“Again the women being under marked. Punam, Tasha and Sam ALL undermarked… Jamie and Chris BOTH overmarked,” noted a fan.

“Undermarked yet again #strictly Gorka and Punam,” agreed another vexed viewer.

“So glad me and Sarah had the same reaction to Punam getting a four. UNDERMARKED,” barked one person.

“Wynne being overmarked every week whilst Punam has been undermarked since her Couple’s Choice is my villain story of this year’s Strictly,” penned another.

Craig infuriated viewers, with some accusing him on social media of “not liking” Punam.

Craig told Punam and Gorka: “I thought it was a little bit too social, like you were just going for a stroll in the park without a care in the world.

“It’s true. It lacked musicality, it lacked energy.”

Sam told Claudia Winkleman about her mishap and said: “I’m just so disappointed, because that could have been our moment, and we felt it coming into it, I was confident.

“Something happened which people don’t need to know about, because I don’t want to make excuses, that’s not what it’s about, and it’s just delivering in the moment, and unfortunately, I kind of let the side down.”

Crediting Nikita for always having her back, Sam added: “I’m just so guilty of being a bit of a perfectionist sometimes, and that can be a detriment to me. But you know what? I still enjoyed it.”

Wynne and Katya were the penultimate performers of the night, dancing a Quickstep to Mr Blue Sky by ELO.

The judges were full of praise for the fun routine and he ended up scoring 33, with two nines in the mix.

However, viewers did not agree with the judges and felt they had overmarked Wynne, and not for the first time.

Paul Merson became the fourth celebrity to be eliminated from the 20th series of the competition.

The former footballer failed to impress the judges in the dance-off against JLS star JB Gill and his dance partner Amy Dowden.

Speaking to hosts Tess Daley and Claudia Winkleman after his and Karen Hauer‘s axe, Paul said: “It’s been really good. For anybody I talk to, I would say you’ve got to go on this show. It’s amazing – everybody.

“It’s been amazing, honestly, amazing. I loved every minute of it, I’ve had a great teacher. Karen’s been amazing, absolutely amazing and I couldn’t wish for a better coach.

“I’ve loved every minute of it. I can dance now – I’ve won because I can dance, I couldn’t dance before and I can half dance now. It’s a bonus, absolute bonus.”

NCIS actor Michael Weatherly ‘looks better than ever’ with slimmed-down physique after 35-lb weight loss

NCIS star Michael Weatherly wowed fans when he showed off his slimmed-down physique after his 35-lb weight loss.

The much-loved actor, 56, is busy filming the spin-off show, Tony and Ziva, and sent his followers into a meltdown when he shared a picture from the set.

Fans went wild when the star showed off his weight loss in a recent picture[/caption]

Both Michael and actor Cote de Pablo are reprising their NCIS characters, Tony DiNozzo and Ziva David, for their new show and fans can’t wait.

To celebrate the new spin-off, Michael posted a picture with his co-star, and wrote: “From the set of #ncis: tony&ziva.

“It’s all about the camels. Magician and writer extraordinaire @johnthemcnamara crafts our new story and wonders await…”

Admiring the picture, fans rushed to comment on how “good” the actor looked, and how “slim.”

One wrote, “Wow! looking good! This series is going to be great!”

While this one said, “How did you lose so much weight? You look great! Can’t wait for this new series!”

This one added, “You both look timeless!”

Another gushed, “You look super slim, hot stuff!”

WEIGHT LOSS

Michael has previously opened up about how he gained weight and even hit the 250-pound mark.

He said he realized he needed a lifestyle change when he ripped his fifth pair of pants in NCIS Season 11.

Speaking about his eating habits, he told People, “I had two very small children (at the time)… That means I had been living with a pregnant lady for a long time.

“While my wife never gave in too much to her Nutella craving, we weren’t doing too much.”

The actor also added that while filming NCIS, he was on set for long hours and the available snacks proved too “tempting” for him.

“This is not an excuse, but the craft-service table is not filled with a lot of super healthy options,” he told the outlet.

Micahel said he used to tuck into snacks on set[/caption]

“Then you get to working late, there’s pizza and Chinese food,” he said.

“I just tended to sit at the trough and continue to graze.”

HEALTHY LIFESTYLE

Michael revealed how he turned his life around and now embraces a healthy lifestyle.

Speaking about his diet, he told People: “No food that comes from a package like potato chips.

“I stayed away from pasta, rice, bread, potatoes anything that’s fun to eat, I did not eat.”

The TV star also said he cut down on alcohol during his weight loss journey.

NCIS COMEBACK

Michael starred on the long-running original NCIS until Season 13 and earlier this year returned for a cameo in a special tribute episode to Ducky, after the death of actor, David McCallum.

Throughout the series, fans fell in love with the relationship and eventual romance between agents Tony and Ziva.

After a faked death, crazy missions, a daughter together, and time away from the team, Tony and Ziva are now raising their child, Tali, in Europe.

That’s where the new series, titled NCIS: Tony & Ziva, will pick up when it debuts.

In a TikTok Q&A Michael said of the new show, “It’s 10 episodes of one long story… it’s like a 10-hour movie.”

He went on, “Limited series is what they call it, I guess, but it really allows you to explore the character arc with each episode being a reset.

“I think [it] is going to bring a lot more depth to the characterization and to the relationships and we’re going to be able to do not as much recaps and exposition.”

NCIS: Tony & Ziva is set to air in 2025.

American Pickers fans accuse scene of being ‘staged’ as Mike Wolfe uncovers a ‘hidden’ and ‘rare’ Shelby car for $75k

AMERICAN Pickers fans are accusing a scene of being “staged,” as Mike Wolfe uncovers a “hidden” and “rare” car worth $75,000.

Mike, 60, stars on American Pickers alongside his brother Robbie, Jon “Jersey Jon” Szalay and Danielle Colby.

Viewers accused a scene from a recent episode of being ‘staged’[/caption]

In a clip from a recent episode posted on the American Pickers’ Facebook page, Mike and Jersey Jon check out a “mystical Shelby hidden in a barn.”

Mike called an expert who checked out photos of the rare car, which the star noted had missing parts.

When Mike asked how much it would cost to restore, the expert said “well over $100,000.”

When the expert said offering $75,000 was fair, the buyers declined to sell the car to Mike.

The seller said, “It might sound crazy turning down an offer for a $75,000 car that’s been sitting there 35 or 40 years, but it’s a big decision to make.

“I understand people would say, ‘This guy is a total idiot.’”

Fans turned to the comment section to accuse the scene of being “staged.”

One viewer commented, “Not at all ‘staged.’”

A second said, “These sort of shows have to be staged… it’s entertaining television. Sellers have to give permission to appear on TV, contracts are signed, camera angles are plotted, sellers unfamiliar with filming rehearse, etc.

“Who cares… it is a good program.”

A third wrote, “All are staged.”

“I think a lot of this stuff is planted ahead of time,” a fourth said.

A rep for American Pickers did not respond to The U.S. Sun’s request for comment.

NEW SEASON, NEW PICKS

American Pickers’ Season 26 kicked off on October 9.

The U.S. Sun reported the show had low ratings for the premiere episode

On the hour-long premiere, Mike picked through Evel Knievel memorabilia, including a one-of-a-kind billboard from his Snake Canyon jump.

But the episode failed to bring in many viewers, as The U.S. Sun reported just 565,000 fans tuned in.

This was a major drop from Season 25, which kicked off with a two-episode premiere in December 2023.

Classic Car Cemetery raked in 723,000 viewers and part two of the premiere, Hidden Cash Stash, had ratings drop to 676,000.

Episode three saw an increase to 880,000 viewers, and the numbers remained around the same throughout the rest of the month.

By the January 24 episode, ratings skyrocketed to 948,000 viewers.

The numbers dropped back down through most of February with the lowest rating on February 14 at 774,000 viewers and the highest on February 28 at 966,000.

The finale episode on March 27 brought in 832,000 viewers.

FRANK’S FINAL BOW

As American Pickers fans know, longtime star Frank passed away at 60 years old on Monday, September 30, two years after suffering a stroke.

His final episode was in March 2020, as he left the show to recover from back surgery.

During his time off, Frank lost 65 pounds and was living a healthier lifestyle, including being sober from alcohol.

He had been open about wanting to return to the series after his hiatus but was officially let go in 2021, Mike confirmed.

“I will miss Frank, just like all of you, and I pray for the very best and all good things for him on the next part of his journey,” Mike said at the time.

The two had a falling out, as Frank exclusively told The U.S. Sun in a 2021 interview, “I haven’t talked to Mike in two years. He knew my back was messed up, but he didn’t call me up and ask how I was doing. That’s just how it is.

“I think Mike wants to get his brother Robbie in there to replace me. I don’t know why he’s behaving like that towards me.”

The two reconciled after Frank suffered the stroke in July 2022.

Mike and other loved ones were by Frank’s side at the time of his passing.

REMEMBERING FRANK

American Pickers posted on social media following Frank’s death, “We are saddened to share that our friend and beloved member of The HISTORY Channel and American Pickers family, Frank Fritz, has passed away on September 30, 2024.

“Frank filmed American Pickers for over a decade. We will always remember ‘the bearded charmer’ and his never-ending search for vintage motorcycles and bikes. Our thoughts are with Frank’s loved ones during this difficult time.

“He will be deeply missed.”

Archeologists find ancient church in the first EVER Christian country built just 350 years after Jesus walked the Earth

ARCHAEOLOGISTS have uncovered an ancient church in the first ever Christian country – built a mere 350 years after Jesus walked the Earth.

Experts discovered the fourth-century church in Armenia – and is considered the country’s oldest ever found.

Armenia is believed to be the first Christian state in the world[/caption] a map showing the location of artaxata and yerevan

Armenia is believed to be the first Christian state in the world after King Tiridates III converted to Christianity.

The ancient church is bizarrely octagonal, measuring nearly a whopping 100ft in diameter – crafted from a mortar floor laid with terracotta tiles.

On the incredible site, archaeologists found significant amounts of marble that’s believed to have been imported from the Mediterranean.

The import of the ultra-valuable material suggests the church was once extravagantly decorated for visitors and held incredible significance.

Archaeologist at National Academy of Sciences of Armenia Mkrtich Zardaryan explained how octagonal churches were “unknown” in the country “until now”.

He said: “We are very familiar with them from the Eastern Mediterranean region, where they first appeared in the 4th-century C.E.”

The octagon became a key symbol in early Christianity as a representation of Jesus’s eighth day – his resurrection.

Octagon’s were commonly used for early baptisteries and shrines for martyrs.

The Armenian-German research team has been excavating in the Artaxata area for around six years.

It’s a site where founder of the Armenian Apostolic Chutch Gregory the Illuminator is said to have converted the Armenian king Tiridates III to Christianity in 301 C.E.

The excavation project look to continue their work into next year to reveal more of the church’s history.

It comes as an ancient 4,000-year-old tomb with mysterious wooden statues was unearthed in Egypt.

The fascinating discovery revealed a chamber with two wooden coffins one placed inside the other – and both had painted texts describing the journey to the afterlife.

The mysterious tomb was made at the Nile River in Upper Egypt’s Western Assiut Mountain by a team of researchers.

The tomb which dates back to the 12th Dynasty, belonged to Edi, the daughter of Jifai-Hapi, the governor of Assuit during the reign of King Senusret I of the 12th dynasty between 1991 and 1778 BC.

Mohamed Ismail, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Antiquities said: “Preliminary studies suggest that Edi died before reaching the age of 40 and suffered from a congenital foot defect.”

The tomb also included smashed jars and wooden statues and the mummy was dismembered.

Ismail pointed out the chamber had been looted in antiquity.

The team of archaeologists will continue excavations inside the tomb to find out more about the governor and his daughter and more details about the historical era they lived in.

America’s worst serial killers: From the Zodiac Killer to Jeffrey Dahmer & Ted Bundy

Several American serial killers became known around the world because their crimes were so depraved.

From Ted Bundy to Richard Ramirez, their crimes are still talked about decades after they were first reported. Here is everything you need to know about America’s worst serial killers.

Zodiac Killer

The Zodiac Killer haunted Northern California in the late 1960s and taunted the police who were struggling to catch him.

His first victims, killed on December 20, 1968, were named Betty Lou Jensen, aged 16, and David Arthur Faraday, aged 17.

The killer sent cryptic ciphers which he claimed held the key to his identity to various newspapers, but they proved difficult to solve.

He signed off letters mocking police efforts to catch him with an ominous symbol, which was theorized to contain coordinates for his killings.

Eventually, the killer would go on to claim five victims, aged 16-30, during his crime spree.

His final murder was that of a cab driver named Paul Stine in 1969.

The Zodiac Killer was never caught, but his cipher was eventually cracked by two software engineers and a cryptographer in 2020.

It was revealed that the killer believed murdering people would make them his slaves in the afterlife and he also claimed to have killed 37 people.

The only man named as a suspect by the police was named Arthur Leigh Allen, who died in 1992.

A police search of his house found a wristwatch belonging to him named the Zodiac Sea Wolf wristwatch, which bore the same logo seen on the killer’s letters.

A group of cold case investigators named The Case Breakers, believed that the killer was a man named Gary Francis Poste.

According to former Army counterintelligence agent Jen Bucholtz, removing Gary’s name from the cipher allowed it to be solved, which the team suggested was a strong piece of evidence that he was the killer.

He died in August 2018 at the age of 80, after being diagnosed with sepsis, dysphagia and vascular dementia.

Jeffery Dahmer

Jeffery Dahmer is one of the most notorious serial killers in American history, whose depraved crimes were dramatized in Ryan Murphy’s Monsters.

He was born in 1960 and went on to commit his first murder in 1978 when he killed an 18-year-old boy.

Dahmer’s murders would become infamous for their brutal nature, which often saw him dissect their bodies and keep parts of them for sexual purposes.

In some cases, Dahmer even ate parts of his victims in an attempt to make them “part” of him

Most of his targets were gay or bisexual men, or men who were sex workers, who lived in his home state of Wisconsin

He often drugged his victims before killing them but botched one attempt when he accidentally drank the drugged drink.

Dahmer awoke the next morning to find that the man had stolen $300 and a watch.

The murderer killed 17 people during the period spanning 1978 to 1991, with his first murders taking place in his grandmother’s house before he moved into an apartment of his own.

One victim was even taken to the police by three women, but Dahmer was able to convince the authorities that the boy was his lover before taking him home and murdering him.

Dahmer was finally brought to justice in 1991 when he lured 32-year-old Tracy Edwards to his apartment before brandishing a knife and making Tracy go into the bedroom.

The murderer then said that he wanted to eat Tracy’s heart, but the 32-year-old was able to trick Dahmer into letting him go back into the living room.

Tracy punched Dahmer in the face and fled, before waving down two police officers.

The trio returned to the apartment, where Dahmer was only able to give vague reasons for the fact that Tracy had a handcuff on his wrist.

One of the officers spotted the photographers Dahmer had taken of his victims after he murdered them, prompting the killer to try to escape.

He was taken into custody when the officers then found a severed head in Dahmer’s fridge.

A more detailed inspection found several skeletons and other body parts in the flat and eventually Jeffrey confessed to his crimes.

He became known to the press as the Milwaukee Cannibal and was handed 15 life sentences.

Dahmer died just three years after his arrest, when he was beaten to death by fellow inmate Christopher Scarver.

When asked why he killed Dahmer and another inmate named Jesse Anderson, Christopher said: “God told me to do it.

“Jesse Anderson and Jeffrey Dahmer are dead.”

Rodney Alcala murdered many women in New York and California

Rodney Alcala

Rodney Alcala was nicknamed The Dating Game Killer because of his appearance on the 1970s matchmaking show.

By the time he starred on the show in 1978, he had already attacked an eight-year-old girl named Tali Shapiro with a metal bar and had killed several women.

Alcala had devised a way of luring victims to remote areas which involved posing as a photographer who wanted to take pictures for his “portfolio”.

His terrifying crime spree began in 1968 and he used various aliases to remain on the run from the law.

While living in New York, he shared an office with Richard Cottingham who was also known as the Times Square Ripper.

He was also taught by Roman Polanski when he attended New York University.

When Alcala appeared on the Dating Game, he tried to convince a bachelorette named Cheryl Bradshaw to pick him as her date.

Alcala was successful, but Cheryl eventually backed out of the date all together because she felt that his sinister humor was frightening.

As his murder spree continued, he killed the goddaughter of Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr who was named Ellen Jane Hover.

He was finally caught when a police sketch of him reached his old parole officer, which allowed police to link him to other crimes.

Alcala was arrested in 1979 and sentenced to death in 1980, but this sentence was later overturned.

Instead, he lived out the rest of his days in custody before dying in 2021.

The film Woman of the Hour dramatized his horrifying crime spree and is available to stream on Netflix.

Ted Bundy

Ted Bundy is perhaps the most famous American serial killer in history, with countless films, documentaries and dramas being based on the murderer.

Even High School Musical star Zac Efron has played Ted Bundy.

Bundy confessed to 30 murders, but the number of young girls and women that he murdered is thought to be much higher.

It is unknown when his killing spree began, but he claims that his first murder took place in 1971.

His first documented killing was in 1974 when he was 27.

He was arrested a year later but managed to escape through a window during a preliminary hearing in 1977.

After being re-arrested, Bundy escaped again by sawing a hole in the ceiling of his cell.

Until this time, his murders had taken place in the Western states of Oregon and Colorado, but he fled to Florida after his escape.

He was arrested once again in 1978, after committing a series of murders and rapes throughout the Sunshine State.

Bundy’s trial was covered by over 200 reporters and quickly became a media circus, with several women declaring that he must be innocent because they thought he was good-looking.

It was uncovered that studying psychology at the University of Washington had taught him how to evade capture for years.

The serial murderer and rapist chose to defend himself in court, talking in a grandiose way and taking enjoyment in the attention that the trial was giving him.

Eventually, he was sentenced to death on February 10, 1980.

However, he had to wait for nine years before the sentence was finally carried out.

Charles Manson ran a cult named after himself
AP: Associated Press

Charles Manson

Charles Manson was a cult leader and criminal who led a group named The Manson Family in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

He was born in 1934 in Ohio and became obsessed with the legendary rock band The Beatles.

Manson adopted the name of one of their songs, Helter Skelter, to refer to an apocalyptic race war that he felt would break out in the twentieth century.

Although he would later deny this, it was argued in court that the Manson Family were working to start that war themselves.

He also denied being responsible for the series of murders carried out by his cult, which formed in 1968.

The group’s most infamous crime was on August 9, 1969, when they murdered the actress Sharon Tate, who was eight-and-a-half months pregnant at the time.

One cult member, named Susan Atkins, wrote the word “pig” on the wall using Sharon’s blood.

They also murdered four other people who were in the house with Sharon.

The cult struck again just a day later when they murdered Leno and Rosemary LaBianca in their home.

The Manson Family wrote “Death to pigs”, “rise” and “Helter Skelter”, which differed from the Beatles’ spelling, in their victims’ blood on the walls.

Eventually, the murders were linked to the cult, who had established a compound at Spahn Ranch, and a warrant for the arrest of three members was announced on December 1, 1969.

One cult member, Linda Kasabian, was granted immunity and became a key part of the prosecution’s case.

Manson shaved his head and trimmed his beard into a fork in an attempt to look like the devil, before he was sentenced to death, in 1971, alongside three other cult members

His death sentence was never carried out and he eventually died from colon cancer on November 19, 2017.

Richard Ramirez wanted his victims to be frightened of him

Richard Ramirez

Richard Ramirez was born in February 1960 and would go on to be nicknamed the Night Stalker because of his terrifying crimes.

He developed brain damage as a result of abuse by his father, and started using drugs at the age of 10 before his cousin murdered his wife in front of him when he was 15.

This warped upbringing led Ramirez to become involved in Satanism while his drug abuse worsened.

Over 14 months, beginning in April 1984, he committed at least 14 murders which nearly all took place in his victims’ homes.

One victim, named Maria Hernandez, survived her brush with the killer in March 1985 when his bullet ricocheted off a set of keys that she was holding.

Her housemate, Dayle Yoshie Okazaki, was hiding behind a counter but was killed when she lifted her head to see where Richard was.

During this time Maria had been playing dead and tried to escape, but Ramirez saw her attempting to leave.

When it was clear that she wasn’t intimidated by him, Ramirez let her go.

As his horrifying crime spree continued, it became clear that he was forcing his victims to “swear on Satan” and that he was identifying himself as the “Night Stalker”.

The press began to use this name when referring to his now highly publicized murder spree.

In August 1985, he made a return trip to Arizona and was completely unaware that one of his victims, 29-year-old Inez Erickson, had given the police a description that had allowed them to identify him.

Nearly every major newspaper in the state had a picture of him on their front page, but Richard remained unaware of this.

Then, a group of elderly women identified him as “el matador” just as he noticed his face on the front page of a newspaper named La Opinion.

While attempting to flee by running across the Santa Ana Freeway, he was restrained by 10 residents and arrested on August 31, 1985.

He was sentenced to death on November 7, 1989, and reportedly met Sean Penn while in prison.

Ramirez’s death sentence was never carried out, so he eventually died from complications related to B-cell lymphoma in June 2013.

David Berkowitz claimed to have been influenced by a demon

David Berkowitz

David Berkowitz became known as the Son of Sam, who killed six people between July 1976 and July 1977.

All of his murders took place in New York City and were committed with a .44 Special caliber Bulldog revolver.

His murder spree was heavily publicized, as he began leaving notes written in block capitals beside the bodies of his victims.

In the letters, he identified himself as the Son of Sam.

Berkowitz was arrested after a police check of his car found a loaded gun matching the weapon the serial killer was known to use.

In court, he claimed that a demon appeared to him in the form of his neighbor’s dog, Sam, and said that the demon told him to kill people.

He would later admit that this was a hoax.

New statutes were created as a result of the celebrity status he earned because of his crimes, which were known as the Son of Sam laws.

The new statutes prevented criminals from profiting from the publicity given to their crimes.

His case remains infamous because he claimed that he was acting as part of a Satanic cult, which fed the theory that Berkowitz was not acting alone.

John Wayne Gacy

John Wayne Gacy became known as “the Killer Clown”, because of his public performances as a clown before his murder spree was uncovered.

He murdered at least 33 young men and boys in Norwood Park Township, Illinois

When he was later convicted for these crimes, it was the highest number of homicides by one person in American history.

26 of his victims were buried in the crawl space of his house during his murder spree, which began in 1972.

Gacy would lure victims to his home by gaining their trust and, once they were there, would say that he wanted to show them a magic trick.

The depraved killer was finally brought to justice after the disappearance of one of his victims, named Rober Piest.

His family went to the police, whose investigation led them to John’s house because of his prior sex crimes.

A period of surveillance began in December 1978, which ended with Gacy’s drunken confession in the early hours of December 21.

He reportedly fell asleep midway through his confession but made a sober confession a day later.

Gacy was charged with 33 murders in February 1980 before being convicted for every single charge.

He remained on death row for 14 years before his death was finally carried out by lethal injection on May 10, 1994.

Tennis star’s awkward reaction caught on live TV as fan proposes to him during match

A TENNIS star could not hide his awkward reaction to a fan proposing to him during a match.

Ben Shelton, 22, faced Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the first round of the Swiss Indoors event in Basel.

The American could not help but laugh at the moment[/caption]

But as he closed in on victory, his focus was temporarily distracted by a hopeful heckle from the crowd.

Leading 6-3 5-3 with Etcheverry about to serve to stay in the match, the plucky lady called out.

She asked: “Ben, will you marry me?”

The request prompted a ripple of laughter from the Swiss crowd.
