The 73-year-old was reportedly by the Valvanera Monastery guesthouse at the time.

Medical responders, police and firefighters were mobilised but there was nothing they could do to save the Brit holidaymaker and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The alarm was sounded around 3pm yesterday.

An autopsy is expected to take place today.

Well-placed sources said there was nothing pointing to the death being suspicious in any way.

The hikers were understood to have been walking a route between the Valvanera Monastery, nestled in the Sierra de la Demanda mountains and home to a 28-room guesthouse and restaurant, and Los Pancrudos which is a succession of four mountains all above 6,500ft high.

As well as a woman described as his wife the dead man is said to have been with two friends.

Hansen beamed as he was presented with a personalised shirt by his old team at Firhill Stadium.

The 69-year-old was in attendance after a health scare in the summer.

He was taken seriously ill and hospitalised in June before being allowed to complete his recovery at home.

As well as receiving a shirt on Saturday, Hansen also appeared on the pitch, where he was asked how it felt to be back at the club.

The former defender explained: “It feels sensational. It’s great to be here, as I haven’t been here in a long, long time.

“I’ve got so many happy memories, in particular with that team in ’76, that team was fantastic.

“As soon as you went into the dressing room here, you just laughed and laughed. Thank you very much for having me here.”

Hansen spent four years with Partick Thistle before joining Liverpool in 1977.

Meanwhile, his older brother John spent his entire playing career with the Jags.

The pair were treated to a win on Saturday as the Scottish Championship side won 2-1 to remain in the top half.

Hansen’s return comes after he was also seen in good spirits earlier this month.

He was pictured chatting to former Everton winger Alan Irvine whilst popping to the shops.

As well as his spell at Thistle, Hansen also spent 14 years with Liverpool through to his retirement in 1991.

During his time at Anfield, he won 24 trophies, including three European Cups and eight league titles.

At least seven dead & six injured after ferry dock mysteriously collapses during festival on Georgia’s Sapelo Island

AT least even people were killed and six injured after part of a ferry dock mysteriously collapsed, sending people plunging into the water.

Crowds had been gathering for a fall festival on Georgia’s Sapelo Island, organised by tiny Gullah-Geechee community of Black slave descendants.

At least seven people were killed after Saturday’s horror[/caption]

But in the midst of celebrations, a gangway at the dock collapsed, sending at least 20 people plunging into the water, Georgia Department of Natural Resources Capt. Chris Hodge said.

Eight people were rushed to the hospital, at least six of them with critical injuries, according to authorities.

Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and other emergency services were searching the water with helicopters and boats with side-scanning sonar.

A team of engineers and construction specialists are also planned to be on site early Sunday to begin investigating why the walkway failed.

The cause of the tragedy – which took place shortly before 4pm on Saturday – is still unknown.

“There was no collision” with a boat or anything else, Natural Resources spokesperson Tyler Jones said.

“The thing just collapsed. We don’t know why.”

Sapelo Island is about 60 miles (97 kilometers) south of Savannah, reachable from the mainland by boat.

The Georgia Department of Natural Resources (DNR), which oversees the island and runs the ferry service, stated on Saturday night that “the gangway has been secured on Sapelo Island and the incident is currently under investigation.”

Three times a day, on average, ferries leave from the Sapelo-side dock to transport passengers to the mainland dock in Meridian.

A chaplain for the DNR was among those who tragically died, a representative for the Georgia DNR named Melissa Cummings confirmed to CNN.

Details on the other victims are yet to be released.

October is Gullah-Geechee Cultural Heritage Awareness Month in the states of North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida and Georgia, where the tragedy took place.

The annual Cultural Day Festival on Sapelo Island is organised by the Sapelo Island Cultural and Revitalisation Society, who expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support.

The organization said in a Facebook post: “Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones who lost their lives and who were injured.

“The Sapelo Island community is grateful for the outpouring of love and support and we ask that you join us in praying for the families of those who were impacted by this tragedy.”

In McIntosh County, the adjacent city of Darien declared that “a day of celebration has turned to tragedy following an accident.”

In separate remarks on Saturday, Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and President Joe Biden expressed their “heartbreak” over the news of the collapse.

The Southern Poverty Law Centre reports that the tragedy occurred after Hurricane Helene caused damage to the island, including a six-day power outage.

“Jill and I mourn those who lost their lives, and we pray for the injured and anyone still missing. We are also grateful to the first responders at the scene,” Biden said.

He continued by saying that the White House maintains contact with local and state authorities to offer any support that could benefit the community.

Kemp said in a post on X, formerly Twitter: “As state and local first responders continue to work this active scene, we ask that all Georgians join us in praying for those lost, for those still in harm’s way, and for their families.”

Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock said he was “deeply saddened” by the news out of Sapelo Island, saying it was “a tragic end to a joyous celebration.”

Francis Ngannou vs Renan Ferreira LIVE RESULTS: Ngannou scores stunning FIRST ROUND KO as he breaks down in tears

FRANCIS NGANNOU broke down IN TEARS after an INCREDIBLE first round KO win over Renan Ferreira last night.

The Predator had not been seen inside an octagon since his January 2022 UFC win over Ciryl Gane, having spent a couple of years chasing huge boxing fights against Tyson Fury and Anthony Joshua.

Ngannou did not waste any time having jumped from the UFC to the PFL, facing reigning heavyweight champ Ferreira, but the Cameroonian was way too good for the Brazilian, dominating in a rapid first-round win.

‘That’s a matter of time’ – Man Utd legend Wayne Rooney still lined up for stunning boxing fight after shock talks

WAYNE ROONEY is still being tipped for a sensational debut fight in boxing – and it is only “a matter of time” before he enters the ring.

The Manchester United legend – who boxed growing up on Merseyside – was linked with a shock boxing switch this year.

Rooney is now in charge at Plymouth[/caption]

He held talks with Misfits Boxing, the home of celebrity-style crossover bouts headed up by KSI and his manager Mams Taylor.

Rooney admitted the talks were ongoing but instead decided to focus on football management – soon after taking the Plymouth job.

But music mogul and Misfits head honcho Taylor believes Rooney stepping into the ring is a case of “when” not “if”.

He told SunSport: “We know that there’s been conversations with Wayne Rooney.

“He’s expressed interest. I think that’s a matter of time and it’s on his timeline, not on mine.

“When he’s ready to do it, then then we’ll get there. There’s also been a couple of others who I’d really like.”

Rooney was once knocked out in a famous drunken sparring session by Phil Bardsley.

And their ex-United team-mate Danny Simpson became the first footballer to cross over to the Misfits ring.

Simpson – who won the Premier League title with Leicester in 2016 – drew over four rounds with YouTuber Danny Simpson.

And now the retired defender has inspired others to lace up the gloves with Taylor expecting more Prem players to fight.

He said: “I’m not going to give you any names because I’ll ruin the surprise.

“But definitely there’s some really big names and some very credible footballers, ex-footballers who have expressed interest.

“So I think that’s gonna unfold in its own time.”

Not only are footballers speaking with Taylor to make the move to boxing but several other famous sports stars.

He said: “I’m not too pushy. I know how it goes with first-timers boxing. If you push too much, you scare them away, you know?

“So you want to make sure that they’re mentally in the right place and actually take that chance of getting in the ring.

“And if you haven’t been brought up as a fighter, it’s a very different experience and everyone who does it, though, after they do it like Danny Simpson says, ‘That was the best experience I’ve ever had in my life.’

“There’s nothing like it. So I expect more athletes from across the board for next year.”

Ukraine kamikaze drone strike targets Putin’s war factory with hundreds of UAVs launched in overnight blitz

UKRAINE has targeted a major Russian explosives plant overnight as it sent hundreds of kamikaze drones into Vladimir Putin’s territory.

A succession of loud explosions were reported at the Sverdlov Plant in Dzerzhinsk, with clouds of white smoke rising from the enterprise in Nizhny Novgorod region in the wake of the attacks.

It is one of the largest Russian producers of industrial explosives, and also manufactures aviation and artillery shells, aerial bombs, components for cumulative anti-tank guided missiles, and warheads for air defence systems.

Footage showed a bright flash in what appeared to be a direct hit on the strategic plant.

Russian air defences were also active around the plant where locals reported ten or more explosions.

The Dzerzhinsk plant has been sanctioned by all major Western countries and Ukraine as a key supplier for Putin’s war machine.

Four firefighters were reported wounded after the strike.

Separately, huge explosions were recorded on videos in both Oryol and Lipetsk cities amid attacks from Ukrainian kamikaze drones.

The targets in these regions – both key locations for Russia’s military-industrial complex – were not immediately clear.

The Russian defence ministry claimed to have shot down 110 Ukrainian drones overnight, including 18 in Oryol region, and 27 in Lipetsk region.

Some 43 were downed over Kursk region.

One targeting Moscow region was downed but more were reported, according to the ministry.

Kazan airport was closed this morning amid suspected drone strikes.

A day earlier a key Russian microelectronics plant caught fire after a jet-powered kamikaze drone strike by Ukraine.

The vast Kremniy El complex in Bryansk region reportedly manufactures microchips for Vladimir Putin’s deadly Iskander ballistic missiles.

One of the biggest electronics bases in Russia with 1,700-plus workers, it also makes key hi-tech parts for multiple other lethal weapons.

Locals said the plant was ablaze following the thunderous nighttime strikes as Ukraine penetrated Russian air defences.

Pictures showed significant damage to a plant building in the aftermath of the fire.

Meanwhile, 17 people were injured as a result of the night attack of the Russian Armed Forces on Kryvyi Rih.
