New Big Brother has failed in every meaningful way – but it has given me a whole new reason to hate the show

JUST at the point when I thought I’d run out of loathing for Big Brother, up popped housemate Segun to try to explain why he was still a virgin at the age of 25.

“No sex before marriage, innit,” he told Emma, who replied: “What religion is that?”

“Christianity.”

“OK, I didn’t know that was a religion. I thought it was some way of life,” like naturism or Pilates or headbanging, which is presumably what Emma must have been doing since about 1971.

Because the staggering thing about this exchange isn’t just the ignorance, it’s also the fact Emma is 53 and must have gone through school when Britain was still a more or less Christian country.

And now?

Well, if you watch television, you’re probably under the impression it’s a moral vacuum run by morons for morons, a fair few of whom have ended up in the ITV house, like Emma, Marcello and Lily who, at the age of 20, can go weeks without showering and still picks her nose before eating the contents.

Attention-craving idiot

A disgusting habit which gains a whole new layer of horror once you’ve discovered she works at a Chinese restaurant in Warrington.

Weird thing is, though, despite all the usual hype, ITV seems to have no great plan for these numbnuts, in terms of challenges and tasks, and for the most part has just encouraged them to sit around discussing their spiritual and political beliefs.

A really bad idea.

For inside that compound they have gathered every shade of stupid in the spectrum, from Tory boy Nathan, whose values don’t seem to stretch much beyond a vague kind of snobbery, to left-wing fun sponge Ali, who stomps around the house wearing a “Trans rights are human rights” T-shirt.

A phrase that means absolutely nothing yet speaks volumes about the self-importance and attention-craving nature of the idiot who’s wearing it.

Somewhere between these two polar opposites, there’s also: Lily, a “Labour girl” who drew a blank with the name “Keir Starmer”;

Marcello, who seems to have been planted by ITV to make some point about misogyny; and Daze, an environmental activist who hasn’t let the fact she’s the size of a recycling bin stop her telling the others: “People die of starvation every day,” or informing them: “All I want to do is rip into a juicy steak.”

You name the hot political issue, these doughballs have got an ill-informed opinion on it — and it all came to a moment of revelation on Friday when narrator Marcus Bentley announced: “Daze and Khaled are in the bedroom discussing Palestine.”

A word that gave away the production team’s own prejudices because, leaving aside the thorny issue of whether an independent Palestine state has ever existed, they were, in reality, discussing Israel and the wider Middle East when Daze said: “Actually, if you, like, boil it down, no one should be killed like this. It’s, like, not OK, regardless of the situation.”

A statement so empty and stupid it could’ve come straight from our current Government. ’Cos that’s the thing about Big Brother and its contestants.

Their stupidity is no longer unique. It’s lost its USP.

Everything else, including our politicians, seems to have dumbed down to their level and you could, in fact, swap Nathan for Jacob Rees-Mogg, Lily for Angela Rayner and Daze for David Lammy and I’m not saying it would be seamless, but the level of debate and collective IQ wouldn’t improve that much.

This all-new, politically driven Big Brother has, I’ll admit, succeeded in as much as it’s given me a whole new reason to hate the show.

But it’s failed in every meaningful way, including the viewing figures, which launched with a paltry 825,000 and dropped thereafter.

I’m one of the dwindling number who are duty-bound to watch, of course, and when last I looked they’d dressed Nathan up as Boris Johnson for a Downing Street food budget challenge, while Ali was threatening to quit Big Brother with the words: “I’m going to leave ’cos this sucks. It’s a s**t experience and I don’t want to have arguments with people on television.”

She didn’t make good on her threat, obviously.

But as epitaphs for this dying show go, it’s pretty unbeatable.

ITV gets slice of action

LATEST part of ITV’s ongoing attempt to turn itself into Channel 4 was a surprisingly solemn documentary with a very enticing billing – I Cut Off His Penis: The Truth Behind The Headlines.

A title which involves the network trying to hide its own gleeful prurience behind some academic tut-tutting and worthy medical opinions from the likes of Doctor Apirag Chuangsuwanich, a medic from the dong-chopping capital of the world, Thailand, who explained: “The problems of penis cutting are rooted deep in domestic issues.”

Lorena Bobbitt severed her husband John’s prong then threw it out of her car window[/caption]

A possibility, I’m sure, you’d never considered.

The simple truth behind the headlines, though, as newspapers reported accurately at the time, was that a woman called Lorena Bobbitt severed her husband John’s prong then threw it out of her car window.

A lot of other abused women from across the world followed suit, including New Yorker Brigitte Harris, who later found solace, we learned, in her own food-delivery company, which really should be trading under the name Deliverow or Deliveroohyah, but hasn’t even had the nerve to go with Cocado.

Patient Zero, though, remains Lorena Bobbitt, who provided the one solid-gold quote of the night.

“As the whole world knows, I cut off his penis and there’s no way I can candy coat it.”

Well, there is, and you could’ve piped it full of apricot jam and put it on to bake at gas mark seven as well, but didn’t.

One to watch

AND finally, if you haven’t already watched One Day In October, please make sure you do, before it disappears from Channel 4’s catch-up service.

Unexpected moron in bagging area

THE Chase, Bradley Walsh: “Which Baywatch star was once married to the singer Kid Rock?”

Tipping Point, Ben Shephard: “Type 45 destroyers are ships that belong to which branch of the British Armed Forces?”

Ben Shephard: “Which typically round stoned fruit is an anagram of the word cheap?”

Random TV irritations

BBC News carrying the Wynne Evans and Katya Jones “Joke gone wrong” story on its main Six O’Clock bulletin.

Mr Loverman forgetting it needs to be entertaining as well as woke and worthy.

Endless sob stories completely destroying the credibility of Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins.

And the entirely predictable mauling of ex-Tory MP Dame Andrea Jenkyns, by all of the usual cowards on Have I Got News For You, where, whatever horrors Labour’s new housing policies unleash, Boris Johnson will continue to live rent-free in Ian Hislop’s head.

TV Gold

ADEEL AKHTAR acting everyone else into oblivion on BBC1’s Showtrial.

BBC2’s brilliantly edited Parole turning into the best guessing game on television.

The priceless look on the face of left-wing actress Sue Johnston during ITV’s DNA Journey when she discovered her uncle was a Tory MP.

 BBC1’s masterpiece Industry.

And Gone Fishing having its own “Doctor Livingstone, I presume?” moment when Paul Whitehouse was suddenly confronted by his muse, Tony Blackburn, with a Mike Smash style “Pop a-doodle-do, my great mate.”

Great TV lies and delusions of the month

Celebrity SAS: Who Dares Wins, Shazia Mirza: “As you know, I’m a comedian.”

Lorraine, Diane Abbott: “Women in public life are not allowed to make mistakes.” (So why are you still here?)

And Big Brother, Will Best: “I think I love them all. Is that allowed?”

Allowed? Yes. Believed? Not an effing chance.

Great sporting insights

LEE HENDRIE: “It’s been a great game from start to finish and it’s not even half-time.”

Ryan Lowe: “I just can’t call this league. Port Vale will go straight back up and Doncaster will be up there too.”

Tim Sherwood: “Sancho doesn’t look but he sees Cucurella.”

INCIDENTALLY, October’s No S**t, Sherlock award goes to Ferne McCann’s husband Lorri Haines, whose first words to an intimacy coach, on My Family And Me, were: “I feel there’s definitely a void that needs filling.”

Like the great Bexley-heath sinkhole needs concreting, you’d better believe there is, Lorri.

Andy Reid sends message to Kansas City Chiefs star who Patrick Mahomes ‘trusts’ – making Travis Kelce ‘very important’

KANSAS City Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is placing his confidence in a veteran player.

The Kansas City Chiefs are dealing with multiple offensive injuries, and are expecting a wide receiver to step up and lead the team.

KANSAS CITY, MO – SEPTEMBER 05: Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster (9) catches a ball before an NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Kansas City Chiefs on September 5, 2024 at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, MO. Juju is playing in his second season with the Chiefs this year[/caption]

The Chiefs lost wide receiver Rashee Rice for the season, and already were missing veteran player Marquise Brown.

Without them, first-round rookie Xavier Worthy appeared to be the top target remaining for Patrick Mahomes.

However, veteran wide receiver Juju Smith-Schuster is the one stepping up for the Chiefs, and Andy Reid has full faith in him.

“He’s a veteran, he works hard, and he’s smart,” Reid said.

“Pat [Mahomes] has trust in him. We as coaches have trust in him and we’ve tried to put him in good positions for his strengths and try to utilize those.

“I think all of those things add up to production.”

With no Rice in the lineup, Juju broke out in a big way in the Chiefs’ last game on October 7.

He caught seven passes for 130 yards and helped the Chiefs take down the New Orleans Saints 26-13.

“He’s kept himself in great shape, he’s smart, and he knows how to play the game,” Reid continued.

Juju previously spent time with the Chiefs in 2022, winning a Super Bowl with the team that season.

It was one of the better seasons of his career too, going for 933 yards and three touchdowns.

He was one of the team’s top options that season, and Reid said him lining up on the other side of Travis Kelce made him important to the Chiefs.

“The guy lining up opposite Kelce ends up being very important,” Reid said.

“They know how to play the game and can kind of do similar things that Kelce can do.

“If you can get that, then you’ve got something going offensively that way.”

London calling

The New York Jets and Minnesota Vikings kick off the NFL's annual run of London fixtures.

New York and Minnesota face off at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday October 6 at 2.30pm local time – 9.30am ET for fans back home in America.

It is the first of three straight NFL Sundays that begin with an early game live from London.

The following week, Tottenham also plays host to the Jacksonville Jaguars against the Chicago Bears.

And on October 20, the Jags will head across town to Wembley Stadium to take on the New England Patriots.

The Chiefs face off against the San Francisco 49ers on Sunday, and Juju will likely continue as the top receiving option for Mahomes.

Kelce will be an option as well, as he is continuing to improve each and every week after a slow start to the season.

He has back-to-back games of 70 yards or more after only having 69 total yards through the first three weeks of the season.

Kelce is still searching for his first touchdown of the season, but it will likely come soon for the 12th-year tight end.

The Chiefs need him to step up alongside Juju with so many injuries on the offense.

“When we go on holiday and people ask what we do, we look at each other and I say that I’m a plumber and Anita works at Tesco.

“People don’t want to sit with the Addams family.”

On top of doing 600 ghost tours a year, Andrew takes calls from locals who suspect their homes are haunted.

Andrew said: “I am a skeptic. I’m an investigator. You have to have an enquiring mind.

“You can’t go round saying that everything is a ghost.

“People call me all the time asking me to check out their house because they think it’s haunted.

“I ask them to keep a diary and usually the noises they’ve been hearing will be the heating coming on and the pipes creaking.

“People from all walks of life believe. Pilots and surgeons say they’ve seen ghosts.

“I wouldn’t say I’m an expert because I don’t think you can be an expert in the unknown but I have experience. I have experienced things that can’t be explained.”

Andrew says the couple plan on spending the rest of their lives in the “charmed” village.

He added: “It’s a lovely place. It has it’s history of being haunted. It fits with what I do.

“The village has had so many good things happen to it. The Darling Buds of May was filmed here.

“A lot of blessed things have happened here for such a small place as well as the great haunted aspect

“It’s a little charmed village.”

Dana White breaks silence on Conor McGregor’s fight announcement with ten-word statement

DANA WHITE has responded to Conor McGregor’s latest claim over his long-overdue UFC return.

The Notorious’ eagerly-anticipated cage comeback was due to take place in June against Michael Chandler before he suffered a broken left pinky toe.

McGregor, 36, revealed to SunSport in July his eagerness to return in December but the UFC brass has opted to have him make his comeback next year.

The Irishman recently claimed that he’d be fighting the resurgent Dan Hooker in a Saudi showdown on February 1.

Both men are keen on the bout, as is UFC President and CEO White.

The 55-year-old said of the potential lightweight showdown: “That would be a great fight. I like that fight.”

Hooker, however, has ruled out fighting the UFC’s poster boy in February as he and wife Helena are expecting their second daughter.

‘The Hangman’ told reporter Helen Yee: “I’m good to go in January or March.

“The missus is due [for a baby in] February, so no can go.

“I’ve got a little girl on the way.

“You’d even turn down a big fight with McGregor for [the birth of your child].

“You’re not missing that. No panties are coming off in February.

“[McGregor’s] busy, he’s got money coming out of his ears.

“If I had that amount of money in the bank, you wouldn’t see me anywhere near a fistfight.”

Former two-division champion McGregor was on course to land a bumper new deal with MMA’s top promotion before the cancellation of his summer showdown with Chandler.

But the Dubliner suggested talks have cooled off following the collapse of his eagerly-anticipated comeback.

He told SunSport: “You know, the fight never happened. So it’s just about getting the fight on.”

Former feather and lightweight champion McGregor hasn’t set foot inside the octagon since breaking his left leg in his trilogy fight with Dustin Poirier.

Android owners told to switch on ‘passkey’ that stops thieves breaking into your apps

IF you’ve got an Android phone then you’ll want to turn on passkeys to keep your apps safe.

They’re an alternative to passwords and Google is trying to get everyone to use them for logging in.

Google
Passkeys are a safer way to log into apps versus passwords[/caption]

Passwords are generally considered to be a terrible way to protect your accounts.

Thieves operating online – and even out in the real world – often hope to exploit the fact they’re often even to guess, or “crack’ with brute force.

So tech giants – including Google – worked to create a new way to log in called passkeys.

“Passkeys are easy to use and phishing resistant, only relying on a fingerprint, face scan or a pin making them 50% faster than passwords,” said Google’s Heather Adkins.

Passkeys work by letting you log in with just a fingerprint or face scan.

They’re designed to that they can’t be guessed, and they’re impossible to re-use.

Passwords can be leaked online – but a passkey can’t.

And people often re-use passwords because they’re easy to forget, or create simple ones that are more memorable.

Re-used passwords allow hackers to break into multiple of your accounts, and simple log-ins are easy to guess.

Passkeys have none of these problems, making them ultra-secure.

They’re already available on your Android phone, and they only take a few seconds to set up.

Google says that despite being out for just a year, passkeys have been used more than a billion times over 400 million accounts.

HOW TO USE PASSKEYS ON ANDROID

Google explains: “You can now use passkeys to sign in without using a password.

“To verify your identity and create a passkey, you need a biometric sensor, like fingerprint or facial recognition, PIN, or swipe pattern.”

a phone with a sign in screen that says use this passkey
Google
You can create passkeys on your Android phone and then save them in your Google Password Manager[/caption]

“Your passkeys are saved and synced by your password manager, and you can use them to sign in on other devices.”

First, you’ll want to note that not all websites support passkeys yet.

However, more are adding support for them over time – and you’ll find that many major apps and services now offer them.

Go to the app you want to set up a passkey for, and then sign in.

DON'T PASS ON PASSKEYS!

Here's what security expert Chris Hauk, Consumer Privacy Advocate at Pixel Privacy, told The Sun...

“Passwords are both hard to remember and in most cases, easy to guess.

“I would venture to say that most users (especially older users) will reuse passwords, simply because of all of the websites and apps that require sign-ins.

“While password managers do help, they are at best, a stopgap measure and do not offer full-ranging security for your login information.

“Passkeys offer the advantage of eliminating the need to enter an email address and password to log in.

“This is especially handy when users are logging in on an iPhone or Android device.

“Passkeys have multiple advantages over passwords. Passkeys cannot be shared or guessed.

“Passkeys are unique to the website or app they are created for, so they cannot be used to login elsewhere like a reused password can.

“Plus, passkeys cannot be stolen in a data breach, as the passkeys are not stored on the company’s servers.

“But are instead are a private key stored only on your device, where biometric authentication (like face ID or Touch ID) is required to use the passkey.”

If you’re not prompted to create a passkey at that point, go into the app’s settings and choose Create A Passkey.

You’ll then be guided through the process, which will involve using your phone’s unlock.

Once that’s done, you can simply sign in at any point.

Your passkey on Android phones can be saved to the built-in Google Password Manager.

If you’re trying to sign into a website on another device – like a Windows PC – then you can still use passkeys.

You’ll simply be prompted to scan a QR code with your phone’s camera, and then verify your log-in using its unlock.

Wardley, 29, is now a bonafide player in the division following his desert demolition job of Clarke – who suffered a broken jaw and damaged cheekbone.

And the Ipswich Town superfan is now eyeing some of the big names in the division, including former long-reigning WBC heavyweight king Deontay Wilder.

When asked about potentially fighting The Bronze Bomber next, he told Box Nation: “I’d happily back myself against him.

“Because ultimately it’s a battle of the bombs and it’s who can land first.

When quizzed about facing either Wilder or Agit Kabayel next, he told The Boxing Show: “Honestly I don’t know.

“It’s not about I want to fight you, it’s about who‘s going to set me up to be in the best position.”

He continued: “Now is the right time to sit with the likes of Frank Warren and my team who have been and put people in world title positions.”

Wilder, 38, is at the tale end of his career having suffered four crushing defeats in his last five outings.

Retirement has been mooted for the once-devastating knockout artist, although his coach Malik Scott insists he wants to fight again.

Wardley knows he’s now a force to be reckoned with in the division but doesn’t want to get too big for his boots.

And he was brought back down to Earth after arriving home from Riyadh when he was forced to get rid of rotting food in his fridge.

In an exclusive interview with SunSport, he said: “Nothing changes for me.

“Even though my missus and mum keep trying to tell me that things have changed now.

“I went to the same old lunch spot with my old friends on Tuesday that I have been going to for years.

“I even had to run to the Co-Op at about 9pm for bread and milk and bits and bobs that I needed for the house because everything had gone off while I was away.

“Tuesday night was bin day so I was out in the garden wheeling them out, nothing changes.

“I don’t have a butler, I am the same old normal guy and I will be at the football at the weekend and crack on with the lads like I usually do.

“I will keep it like this for as long as humanly possible.”

Hostess finally unveils mystery Twinkies flavor after fans guessed for weeks – and shoppers have just days left to try

HOSTESS have lifted the lid on the mysterious Twinkies flavor which had fans’ heads scratching for months.

The limited-edition gooey treat was launched exclusively in Walmart in July.

Hostess have finally unveiled the mystery Twinkies flavor after fans guessed for weeks[/caption]

Lip-licking customers were invited to share their guesses as part of a national contest to bag a year’s supply of Twinkies cakes.

On Wednesday, Hostess put fans out of their misery by revealing the flavor.

“If you guessed Blue Raspberry, then you guessed right,” the company said in an Instagram post.

They added: “Avaliable only at Walmart. Try them today.”

However, shoppers should shake a leg if they want to sink their teeth into the treat, as they will only be available in stores until the end of this month.

GHOULISH GOODIES

It comes after Hostess announced several autumn and spooky season offerings for customers as summer comes to a close.

They include the Pumpkin Spice Twinkies, Iced Pumpkin Cupcakes, and Maple Glazed Donettes.

The Pumpkin Spice Twinkies features a creme in the middle with pumpkin spice flavoring and its classic “fluffy cake” exterior.

TWINKIES TRIVIA

Many people would be surprised to learn that Twinkies, a popular junk food snack, wasn’t always packed with so much sugar.

Its original recipe still wasn’t the healthiest, but it contained more natural ingredients and a surprising flavor compared to what’s often sold today.

The Twinkie was invented in April 1930 by the Continental Baking Company.

According to an article by News Nation, the Twinkie was not always just a tasty treat with vanilla-flavored cream inside.

At this point in time, the company’s signature product was a strawberry shortcake-style delight filled with fresh strawberries and cream.

In a 2010 article, Hostess explained that many of the company’s machines were going unused due to strawberries being a seasonal delicacy.

Manager James Dewar sought out a way to boost productivity at the Chicago-area plant by introducing bananas into the recipe, which were available year-round.

As the then-owner of the Hostess brand, he called them Twinkies, after seeing a billboard for Twinkle Toe Shoes.

The recipe lasted only for about a decade before war-time rationing caused Hostess to swap bananas for vanilla-flavored crème.

This helped Twinkies remain on the shelves with the banana-flavored variety periodically returning to production many times over the next 80 years.

The dairy-based recipe from the past now differs from the current ingredients, which contain preservatives, less dairy, and other additives probably as a way to increase shelf life.

The Hostess brand is no longer owned by the same people, but the crème-filled popular snack is still a staple.

The banana-flavored Twinkie is also permanently offered on the official Hostess site.

Creator James Dewar once said to the Chicago Tribune: “Twinkies were the best darn tootin’ idea I ever had. I still eat at least three of them a day.”

Major update in NBA legend Michael Jordan’s dad’s murder with judge fearing wrong man was convicted 30 years on

THE judge who sentenced Daniel Green to life in prison for the murder of Michael Jordan’s father has petitioned for his release.

James Jordan was murdered aged 56 in July 1993 as he slept in his car in Lumberton, North Carolina.

Larry Demery, left, and Daniel Green, right, were both sentenced to life in prison[/caption]

His body was subsequently found on August 3, in a swamp in McColl, South Carolina.

Green was arrested alongside Larry Demery after the duo made calls from Jordan Sr’s cell phone.

Demery’s subsequent testimony claimed that Green pulled the trigger.

Both men were sentenced to life in prison in 1996, but Demery was granted parole in 2020 – although this has since been revoked.

Meanwhile, Green has been seeking a retrial, having told WRAL News in 2018, “I’ve never killed anybody. I didn’t kill James Jordan. I’m innocent. I’m innocent of murder.”

As per ABC News, judge Gregory Weeks, who presided over the 1996 trial, petitioned for Green’s release in front of North Carolina’s parole commission on Tuesday.

At the time, prosecutors believed that the murder had been committed following a “robbery gone wrong”.

Weeks’ major concern is said to stem from the result of blood tests from Jordan Sr’s car.

He claimed in the petition that an analyst at the time did not disclose that blood tests from a substance found in the car came back inconclusive. These results could have drastically changed the outcome of the trial.

Weeks has not since commented publicly on the case.

But criminal justice advocate Rev. Thomas Jones, who has also been campaigning for Green’s release, told ABC News, “When I heard the judge speak on his behalf, I was weeping. I was flabbergasted.”

He then claimed that Weeks told the commission that he “had never been haunted in such a manner as he was haunted by this case”.

Green, now 49, claims that he had been attending a cookout with Demery, who then left to make a drug deal.

He then alleges that hours later when he returned, a “shaken” Demery asked him to help dispose of the body.

‘REGRET’

Green claims that, while he did agree to do so, he was not involved in the murder itself.

“Every day I live with the remorse and the pain and the suffering caused by my youthful decisions,” he wrote in a letter to the commission. “I regret the harm my actions inflicted on the Jordan family.”

The commission is expected to deliberate for a month before coming to their final decision.

Green has spoken to ABC from prison amid Weeks’ appearance in front of the commission.

He said that the fact that the man who “presided over my trial asked that I be paroled is significant.”

“It speaks volumes about this case, and I’m overwhelmingly grateful.”
