How to bag a bargain

SUN Savers Editor Lana Clements explains how to find a cut-price item and bag a bargain…

Sign up to loyalty schemes of the brands that you regularly shop with.

Big names regularly offer discounts or special lower prices for members, among other perks.

Sales are when you can pick up a real steal.

Retailers usually have periodic promotions that tie into payday at the end of the month or Bank Holiday weekends, so keep a lookout and shop when these deals are on.

Sign up to mailing lists and you’ll also be first to know of special offers. It can be worth following retailers on social media too.

When buying online, always do a search for money off codes or vouchers that you can use vouchercodes.co.uk and myvouchercodes.co.uk are just two sites that round up promotions by retailer.

Scanner apps are useful to have on your phone. Trolley.co.uk app has a scanner that you can use to compare prices on branded items when out shopping.

Bargain hunters can also use B&M’s scanner in the app to find discounts in-store before staff have marked them out.

And always check if you can get cashback before paying which in effect means you’ll get some of your money back or a discount on the item.

Outdoor clothing chain with over 100 branches launches huge closing down sale as town centre store set to shut

A POPULAR outdoor clothing chain with more than 100 stores has announced a shocking store closure.

The shop has been up and running for more than 20 years – and is known to stock popular products from brands including Berghaus, The North Face, and Salomon.

Millets on Market Street, York, was pictured with signs that read “all stock must go” with 30 per cent off on “absolutely everything”.

The much-loved shop’s closure will come as a huge blow to people who rely on the branch for camping essentials.

Customers will now have to visit the nearest Millets shops in Beverley and Scarborough to shop for camping essentials.

The reason behind the store closure is yet to be revealed.

It comes after a series of closures of Millets stores across the country in recent weeks, including Sussex, Halifax and Cheltenham.

A Millets’ branch at Burgess Hill – one of the 100 stores across the nation – is set to close for good.

A source close to the store said: “We decided not to renew the lease at our Burgess Hill store which had come up for renewal.

“This affects four colleagues, and we are working with them to see if there are alternative roles available at other local JD Group stores.”

Shoppers were left crying to hear about the shocking store closure.

They will now have to visit the nearby branches at Horsham GO Outdoors Express, Uckfield Millets or Brighton Millets.

The pictures were posted on the local Facebook page Burgess Hill Uncovered.

The caption read: “Shoe Zone are not renewing their lease at Market Place Shopping Centre, therefore the store will be closing in the near future. Sorry to hear this for the staff.”

Meanwhile, another clothing chain with over 300 branches has launched a huge closing-down sale as a store shuts for good.

The major clothing brand has put up huge signs saying “Everything Must Go” after confirming the branch’s permanent closure.

Trespass revealed that it would be closing its only store in Coventry.

The popular high-street retailer has not yet announced whether jobs will be affected.

The activewear brand employs more than 1,500 people in the UK but has shut around half a dozen stores this year.

Clintons also closed its branch in Bexhill town centre, East Sussex, for good after trading ended in August.

Locals took to Facebook after hearing the news in May which some say was disappointing.

One Facebook user said: “Such a shame that Bexhill is losing another shop.”

“I wouldn’t buy from anywhere else,” said a shopper on Google.

“It’s a wonderful shop,” said another shopper.

Staff confirmed to The Sun the store was closing over the phone.

Clintons currently employs 1,400 people across 179 outlets nationwide.

The high street retailer last pulled down the shutters on its branch Kettering’s Newlands Shopping Centre in May.

Why are retailers closing stores?

RETAILERS have been feeling the squeeze since the pandemic, while shoppers are cutting back on spending due to the soaring cost of living crisis.

High energy costs and a move to shopping online after the pandemic are also taking a toll, and many high street shops have struggled to keep going.

The high street has seen a whole raft of closures over the past year, and more are coming.

The number of jobs lost in British retail dropped last year, but 120,000 people still lost their employment, figures have suggested.

Figures from the Centre for Retail Research revealed that 10,494 shops closed for the last time during 2023, and 119,405 jobs were lost in the sector.

It was fewer shops than had been lost for several years, and a reduction from 151,641 jobs lost in 2022.

The centre’s director, Professor Joshua Bamfield, said the improvement is “less bad” than good.

Although there were some big-name losses from the high street, including Wilko, many large companies had already gone bust before 2022, the centre said, such as Topshop owner Arcadia, Jessops and Debenhams.

“The cost-of-living crisis, inflation and increases in interest rates have led many consumers to tighten their belts, reducing retail spend,” Prof Bamfield said.

“Retailers themselves have suffered increasing energy and occupancy costs, staff shortages and falling demand that have made rebuilding profits after extensive store closures during the pandemic exceptionally difficult.”

Alongside Wilko, which employed around 12,000 people when it collapsed, 2023’s biggest failures included Paperchase, Cath Kidston, Planet Organic and Tile Giant.

The Centre for Retail Research said most stores were closed because companies were trying to reorganise and cut costs rather than the business failing.

However, experts have warned there will likely be more failures this year as consumers keep their belts tight and borrowing costs soar for businesses.

The Body Shop and Ted Baker are the biggest names to have already collapsed into administration this year.

Popular grocery chain rolls out new ‘kiosks’ helping customers save ‘every time they shop’ and reveals new store remodel

A POPULAR grocery chain has rolled out new “saving kiosks” to help customers save more money amid plans for store remodelling.

Stop & Shop has introduced new digital saving stations where shoppers can save on their groceries with digital coupons.

Stop & Shop is the first grocery retailer in Rhode Island to make digital coupons more accessible to all customer[/caption]

These in-store kiosks, called Savings Stations, will make it easier for customers to redeem digital coupons and save money through its GO Rewards loyalty program.

The scheme allows enrolled customers to earn points that can be redeemed for dollars off their next grocery purchase, free products, or gas savings.

Using the digital Savings Station, customers can simply scan their GO Rewards loyalty card or enter their phone number to instantly activate all digital coupons associated with their account.

The Savings Station also automatically activates customers’ personal offers, which are relevant deals just for them based on the items they buy most.

Stop & Shop is the first grocery retailer in Rhode Island to make digital coupons more accessible to all customers, and the instalment of the Savings Stations across the state is part of a larger effort to install these kiosks brand-wide by early next year.

“Today, we are announcing a significant investment in our Rhode Island Stop & Shop stores that will deliver a better shopping experience and bring more value to our local customers,” said Roger Wheeler, President of Stop & Shop.

“We have been listening to our customers – and we have heard you. That is why we’re making it possible to buy more groceries for your family, at a lower cost, at every one of our stores in Rhode Island,£ he added.

It comes after the retailer confirmed the removal of an automatic surcharge along with other moves to benefit the shopping experience.

Those who frequent any of Stop & Shop’s 25 stores in Rhode Island will no longer have to pay 10 cents for paper bags, per an October 8 press release.

Starting in October, the bags will again be free for those at Stop & Shop stores in the state.

Stop & Shop said the move was part of its initiative to “make groceries more affordable” for Rhode Island residents, according to the release.

Along with the 10-cent paper bag fee removal, the retailer said it would be lowering prices on thousands of its national and private brand items.

Shoppers can expect reductions on over 3,500 products across nearly every department in each store.

That’s a total of around 87,500 price drops on merchandise.

Those items that are discounted will have yellow tags that highlight the reduction compared to the original listing.

Stop & Shop included several examples in the release of items that would have price drops, including the Boneless Chicken Breast Value Pack, Hass Avocados, Kraft Shredded Cheese, Yoplait Yogurts, and more.

Price drop percentages were as high as 30% and as low as 11%.

At least three other benefits were also promised for Rhode Island shoppers — weekly sales, deal lock, and meal deals.

Deal lock is a program that secures sale prices for several weeks so customers can take full advantage.

Meal deals offer families of four a main protein-based dish for a discount plus other complimentary items free to make it complete.

Stop & Shop operates over 350 locations across Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Rhode Island.
