Man Utd lost more than HALF A MILLION pounds per injury last season as full injury table revealed – but who had most?

THE cost to Prem clubs of injuries has more than doubled over just four years.

Top flight clubs paid out £266m in wages to players who were NOT available last term.

Harry Maguire also suffered injury problems[/caption]

And Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag’s gripes about his side’s injury woes WERE justified – as the Old Trafford club came out top of the crocks.

With the international players’ union Fifpro having now launched legal action against Fifa in a bid to force the scrapping of next summer’s Club World Cup, the latest edition of the European Football Injury index by insurance brokers Howden could not have been better-timed.

Howden found Prem clubs suffered 915 injuries last season, adding up to one every 94 minutes of match action..

While that was slightly down from the previous campaign, the salaries paid to injured players rose to a new high – and compares to the £113m cost as recently as the 2020-21 season.

And the average amount of time players are spending on the sidelines because of injury has ALSO doubled.

This season has already seen Manchester City star Rodri ruled out for the rest of the campaign, Liverpool gearing up to be without Alisson for six weeks or more and Arsenal lose Martin Odegaard for over a month.

United were the worst-hit in all of Europe’s big five leagues in cash terms, with 75 injury absences seeing £39.81m spent on players Ten Hag could not select.

And Newcastle’s return to the Champions League took its toll as well, with Eddie Howe’s men suffering a Prem-high 76 injuries across the season and losing 14 players last December, coinciding with the climax of their Group Stage campaign.

Premier League injury table for the 2023-24 season

The report states: “The overall injury severity figure in the Premier League has almost doubled since 2021 from 15 days to 28 days.

“That would potentially infer that the Premier League is the most competitive by workload and overall strain on playing squads.

“Across the five major European leagues, the 2023-24 season saw a record high in both injuries and cost as leading clubs and players continue to contend with fixture congestion and the overall effects on injury susceptibility

“It will be fair to expect a continuation of this upwards trajectory.

“The squad depth of clubs will continue to be tested particularly with the impending introduction of the new Club World Cup

“But the cost of injuries in the Premier League has also risen markedly in comparison with the other four ‘Big Five’ leagues.”

United’s issue switch injuries hit their height in April with Ten Hag without 16 players at various stages in the penultimate month of the campaign.

According to Howden, the Old Trafford side, Newcastle, Chelsea – whose injuries last term came at an average cost of £540,000 – and Liverpool all suffered “above average” issues over the past four seasons.

Howden’s James Burrows said: “United have been hard hit in terms of player absences and the impact on team performances. But this has happened to a significant number of clubs.”

Transfer fees scrapped Q&A: How landmark ruling could mean NFL-style trades and stars suing for millions

FORMER Chelsea, Arsenal and Portsmouth midfielder Lassana Diarra has won his landmark case at the European Court of Justice.

SunSport’s Martin Lipton explains what it was all about – and what it might mean for the future of football…

What was the case about?

Diarra argued Fifa’s transfer rules were illegal after the world body backed Lokomotiv Moscow’s claim that he had broken his contract by refusing to train with them.

Is that it?

No. Belgian club Charleroi wanted to sign Diarra but were told they would have to pay the money he was fined by Moscow, while Fifa refused to issue an International Transfer Certificate unless they coughed up.

Okay, so what does the ruling mean?

Theoretically players will have the right to break their contracts and switch clubs without a fee changing hands – just like any employee in any other industry.

Hang on – does that mean the END of transfer fees?

Potentially, yes. Although players would have to want to move.

We would basically end up with a US-style “collective bargaining” model where players would be free to move within transfer windows without impunity.

Clubs might be able to “trade” players – swap deals – but with no extra cash changing hands.

Is everybody agreed about this?

Absolutely not. Fifa claimed the ruling “only puts in question two paragraphs of two articles” of its transfer regulations.

Yet the Judges said the current rules were “prohibited” under EU law and “anti-competitive” as they “limit the freedom of action” of players to change employer.

Police splash $150k on Cybertruck with flashing lights & storage for WEAPONS… but EV won’t be used to chase criminals

A MAJOR police department has splashed out on a $150,000 Tesla Cybertruck – but it won’t be used to chase criminals.

The quirky EV, which has faced multiple recalls since its release last year – including issues with the accelerator and windshield wipers – comes kitted out with flashing lights and a storage space for weapons.

Police in California unveiled the new vehicle for their Irvine fleet in a recent video shared on social media, revealing that it is “the first police cybertruck in the nation.”

But while it may look the part, the Cybertruck is unlikely to see any proper action and will be mostly used for show.

The Irvine Police department plans to use the Elon Musk creation as part of its Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program in a bid to make its anti-drug events at schools more engaging.

However, the Irvine PD said it will still be capable of responding to emergencies and assisting the local community when required.

In a post on their Facebook page, the department said: “For over three decades, our D.A.R.E. officers have driven attention-grabbing and one-of-a-kind vehicles that never fail to turn heads and excite student.”

Irvine’s D.A.R.E. program, which has been running for 40 years, is known for using unique vehicles to connect with students.

Police spokesperson Kyle Oldoerp said: “The goal has always been to have a unique vehicle that doesn’t look like a police car, that is approachable by kids and students to encourage interaction between officers and our schools and our community.”

Kitted out by Unplugged Performance, who are world-renowned for their premium upgrades for Tesla vehicles, the Cybertruck comes with emergency lights, custom graphics, and police communications tech inside the cabin, as well as a space for weapons.

Since its launch, the Cybertruck has commanded plenty of attention for itself.

Its launch event was particularly memorable, with Tesla’s chief designer, Franz von Holzhausen, accidentally shattering one of its windows while attempting to demonstrate its toughness.

The massive slab-shaped vehicle has previously been dubbed “indestructible” when its creator unveiled the bulletproof car back in 2019.

Despite concerns, Oldoerp said the police department isn’t worried and even mentioned that recalls are routine for their fleet.

What’s more, a Tesla repair facility is located nearby to handle any issues they may have.

Ordinarily, the department will fork out $116,000 for a standard patrol car, the Ford Interceptor, compared to the $150,000 price-tag for the Cybertruck.

But while the Interceptor typically lasts three to four years, the Cybertruck is expected to serve for a decade.

Better yet, they believe they’ll save $6,000 in fuel over the next five years thanks to its electric power.

A host of A-list celebs have been spotted behind the wheel of a Cybertruck, including Lady Gaga, Kim Kardashian, Shaq, Jay-Z, Beyoncé, and Pharrell Williams.

Horrifying reality of ‘rogue’ funeral directors laid bare at inquiry into NHS morgue monster who raped corpses

FUNERAL directors must be regulated to stop rogue operators, warn experts investigating the NHS morgue monster David Fuller.

Fuller was sentenced to life in prison for murdering two women and sexually abusing the bodies of more than 100 at hospitals in Kent.

The Fuller Inquiry warned current rules mean anyone can set up a funeral home (stock image)[/caption]

Sir Jonathan Michael, chair of the inquiry into his crimes, said the funeral industry needs urgent reform.

He said he has sped up his work due to “recent distressing reports”.

Three people were arrested in the summer in connection with a funeral home in Hull, East Yorks, after families found loved ones’ remains had been mixed up or lost.

Past incidents have seen bodies treated inappropriately or left to rot in funeral parlours.

NHS hospital mortuaries have also been found to be too small, too warm or not properly secured.

Anyone can set themselves up as a funeral director and keep the bodies in their garage without anybody being able to stop them. That cannot be right

Sir Jonathan Michael Chair of the Fuller Inquiry

The Fuller inquiry found funeral directors do not need a licence, qualifications or training, and described the sector as an “unregulated free-for-all”.

Sir Jonathan said: “It is clear to me that many people believe or assume that the sector is already regulated, and they are shocked to find this is not the case.

“The fact is that anyone can set themselves up as a funeral director.

“They could do it from their home and keep the bodies of the deceased in their garage without anybody being able to stop them.

“That cannot be right.

“My hope is that publishing this interim report now will assist both the Government and the funeral sector itself to take steps that assure the public that care in the funeral sector is fit for purpose.

“We need a regulatory regime that will not tolerate any form of abuse or any practices that compromise the security and dignity of the deceased.”

Health Secretary Wes Streeting said: “The Government is committed to preventing any similar atrocities happening again and ensuring
that the deceased are safeguarded and treated with dignity.”

FULLER 'FREE TO OFFEND' DUE TO HOSPITAL FAILINGS

MORGUE monster David Fuller was free to assault dead women for 15 years due to “serious failings” at the hospitals where he worked, a report found.

The double killer abused at least 101 women while working at mortuaries in Tunbridge Wells Hospital and at the former Kent and Sussex Hospital.

A probe found there were “missed opportunities” to stop the necrophiliac’s 15-year rampage.

His youngest victim was a nine-year-old girl and the oldest was 100 years old, with Fuller sometimes violating the bodies more than once.

Inquiry chairman Sir Jonathan Michael said: “Failures of management, of governance, of regulation, failure to follow standard policies and procedures, together with a persistent lack of curiosity, all contributed to the creation of the environment in which he was able to offend, and to do so for 15 years without ever being suspected or caught.

“Over the years, there were missed opportunities to question Fuller’s working practices.

“Had his colleagues, managers and senior leaders been more curious, it is likely that he would have had less opportunity to offend.”

Patrick Mahomes asks ‘why is he so good at that?’ as Aaron Rodgers completes feat Chiefs star never has

PATRICK Mahomes still can’t believe how Aaron Rodgers has a knack for achieving a rare feat that even the three-time Super Bowl MVP has failed to do in his career.

The Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback, 28, reacted to an impressive play made by Rodgers during the New York Jets‘ 23-20 Monday Night Football loss to the Buffalo Bills.

The Jets were down 20-10 and had one last play to end the first half when Rodgers heaved a successful 52-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to wide receiver Allen Lazard.

The strike cut the halftime deficit to 20-17 as social media buzzed over Rodgers’ stunning throw.

Mahomes was among those who commented on the pass on X.

“Why is Aaron so good at that [laughing emojis],” he wrote on Monday night.

Mahomes has never completed a Hail Mary touchdown pass in his six-plus seasons in the NFL.

NBA superstar LeBron James replied to Mahomes and seemed to agree with him.

“Right!! It’s ridiculous!” the four-time NBA champion commented.

Mahomes and LeBron referred to Rodgers’ past and present history of completing miraculous Hail Mary passes.

During his tenure with the Green Bay Packers, Rodgers achieved three Hail Marys for touchdowns.

Two of the Hail Mary touchdowns came in the playoffs, including one that forced overtime against the Arizona Cardinals in 2015.

Rodgers’ touchdown pass on Monday came with confusion, however, as one ref called it incomplete and another called it a touchdown.

The ball popped out of Lazard’s hand after he caught it, but the officials talked it over and ruled it a touchdown.

The call was right as Lazard had possession in the end zone before the ball was ripped out by Bills players.

The Jets still went on to lose their third straight game.

Rodgers threw a game-sealing interception for the second consecutive game.

He ended with 294 passing yards, two touchdowns, and an interception.

It was the Jets’ first game under interim head coach Jeff Ulbrich.

The franchise fired Robert Saleh after last week’s 23-17 loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London.

The Jets will go on the road to face the Pittsburgh Steelers in Week 7 on Sunday Night Football.
