I’m a gardening expert – if you don’t do an important weeding task in October, you could face huge problems come spring

A GARDENING expert has revealed that homeowners must do an important task now, to avoid huge problems in the spring time.

Summer is well and truly behind us, and although the UK is being battered with a deluge of wind and rain this week, this does not mean it’s time to hang up our gardening gloves just yet.

Autumn is the perfect time to do a spot of weeding[/caption]

There are still plenty of jobs to be done in the garden, and Emily Green expert at Howarth Timber, revealed that to protect your garden this October, one important task you should tackle is weeding.

Weeding

Weeding is a crucial job to undertake in autumn, as if it is not done, you could face huge problems in spring.

Emily revealed that weeds should be removed from the root, especially if they have grown through pavement joints, or along garden edging.

She explained: “As we all know, weeds may become an issue if allowed to grow wild, and if they aren’t managed early in the winter, they will become a greater problem in the spring.”

Emily said that it may be necessary to use a weed killer, but urged gardening lovers to find a natural one, such as white vinegar or salt, so as not to use any toxic chemicals.

Tidy Your Garden

The expert added that it is also important to make sure that your garden is kept tidy this autumn, by removing any undesirable waste from the compost heap and trimming perennial plants back to soil level.

However, she said that you should be sure to leave your soil alone, as it needs protection from the harsh winter weather and over-digging can remove the soil’s protective top layer.

The gardening pro added that now is a great time to clean out your guttering, to guarantee that water is constantly being directed away from your property.

Guttering can get especially clogged in the autumn, as fallen leaves often find their way into drainpipes.

Protect Your Garden From Flooding

Emily revealed that flooding can have an extremely detrimental impact on your garden.

“As your soil becomes waterlogged, it saturates and kills the roots, so many garden plants and shrubs are unable to withstand heavy rainfall”, she explained

“So be prepared when the likelihood of heavy rain develops.”

To prevent plants from rotting and dying, the expert suggested putting them in raised beds, to keep them out of harm’s way.

October gardening jobs

The Sun’s Gardening Editor, Veronica Lorraine, has shared the jobs you need to tackle in October.

“It’s a good time to trim deciduous hedges – like box, yew, hawthorn, hornbean and beech – plus hedge trimmers are a great upper body workout!

Make leafmould – gather up all the fallen leaves and fill either bin bags or plastic carrier bags. Seal the top, stick a few small holes in the bag – and then store for a year or more. Free compost!

It’s unlikely you’ll get any more red tomatoes so have one final harvest and chuck the plants on the compost. See if you can get the green ones to ripen by putting in a drawer (some say with a banana). Also keep the seeds from a couple – and plant again next year if they went well.

Finish getting in your spring bulbs. Ideally you’d have done daffs and alliums, but tulips are better in the ground when the soil temperature gets a bit colder.

It’s good to leave some plant litter in the ground – it adds to the nutrients as it rots down, and provides shelter and food for insects. But remove the manky brown bits collapsing all over the lawn/winter structure.

Mulch – it not only suppresses weeds, but keeps the soil warm, improves water retention and adds a little winter duvet to your outside space.

October’s a good month for carrots, peas, asparagus, broad beans, and rhubarb.”

Cover Up Garden Furniture

With the weather as grim and icy as it is, it’s unlikely we will be having any more BBQs this year, so it is important to cover up garden furniture, so that it doesn’t get damaged over winter.

Emily suggested that if you have space to store furniture in your garage, this will keep it the most protected.

However, you can also purchase some thick waterproof sheet covers that can be securely placed over the furniture.

Paul Nicholls snaps up ‘impressive’ new jockey to follow in the footsteps of Harry Cobden and Bryony Frost

LEGENDARY trainer Paul Nicholls has snapped up an ‘impressive’ new jockey for his yard – to follow in the footsteps of Harry Cobden and Bryony Frost.

The Ditcheat boss has a knack for producing top talent at his Somerset base – and it extends beyond the horses.

Trainer Paul Nicholls, trainer of Monmiral, celebrates winning the Pertemps Network Final, which was ridden to victory by Harry Cobden on day three of the 2024 Cheltenham Festival at Cheltenham Racecourse. While Sean Bowen, Cobden and Frost all won the conditional jockeys championship while riding for Nicholls.

Now Jay Tidball is looking to forge a similar path.

The 24-year-old from Somerset, who so far has 22 career wins, was jocked up on Enrilo in a veterans’ chase on the first official day of the new jumps season at Chepstow last Friday.

It didn’t go to plan with the ten-year-old being pulled up five fences from home.

But you can probably put a line through it with Nicholls suffering a nightmare opening weekend, in which he failed to find a winner from 12 runners.

The trainer openly said his horses will need another week or two to start hitting top gear – while Cobden’s ride on Farland was investigated by stewards.

But even getting the leg up on a former Grade 2 winner in a £30,000 race was a huge vote on confidence in Tidball.

Speaking of his aims and aspirations, he told the Racing Post: “This season I really want to give it a good go.

“The year before last I had a really good campaign, losing my 7lb claim, and last term I had a few falls and injuries which knocked me back a bit.

“I haven’t set myself any targets, I’ve just come into Paul’s to keep my head down and ride as many winners as I can. I’ll give it a good kick.

“It’s an enjoyable place to work and I’m glad I’m here.”

Nicholls’ assistant Charlie Davies labelled Tidball ‘impressive’ in a recent blog post.

He wrote: “Beyond the horses, we’ve also welcomed some fresh faces to various roles in Team Ditcheat.

“Jay Tidball has joined us as a conditional jockey and has impressed everyone with his natural horsemanship.”

Tidball’s promotion came as Ben Pauling announced he had a new No1 for the season.

The Cotswolds-based trainer who Harry Redknapp has horses with confirmed Ben Jones will be his main man, with Kielan Woods being demoted.

My husband said he loved me the day we met online – but when I finally moved countries to be with him, he gave me an STI

A FIANCE revealed her shock after discovering her partner who she knew for 90 days cheated on her straight away.

Faith, who works in the housekeeping department, always wished to move to the US until she met her partner Loren.

Faith and Loren had known each other for 90 days after meeting online[/caption]

The couple gave an insight into their relationship on the reality show 90 Day Fiance

Loren had always dreamed of marrying a trans woman, but finding the right person in the U.S. proved challenging.

So, he decided to look for love abroad and downloaded a couple of Filipino dating apps. Almost immediately, he connected with Faith.

Even though they had never met in person, they messaged each other daily.

Loren quickly developed deep feelings for Faith, admiring her hardworking spirit and close-knit family.

Remarkably, Loren and Faith told each other “I love you” within the first day of chatting.

To Loren, Faith seemed perfect in every way.

Six months later, Loren spent his entire savings to fly to Manila and meet Faith in person and stayed with her in the Philippines.

But as the reality show followed their relationship, it began to show some turbulence.

Changing plans

Faith was taken aback when Loren decided to stay in the Philippines, instead of returning to the US.

Speaking to Loren on the documentary, she says: “I didn’t know (you wanted to stay in the Philippines) because you know, I thought if we were going to be together, we were going to move to the US?”

Speaking to the cameras, Faith continues: “It’s a big shock for me, he always knew that I hoped to move to the US and he never told me if he wanted to live here instead.”

But what really gnawed at her was this overwhelming feeling that Loren was keeping secrets.

Other women

And she soon uncovered the truth that Loren was seeing other women, and he caught an STD.

Speaking on the show, Faith says: “I made the wrong decision.

“I’ve made such a bad decision.”

From Loren’s perspective, he thought their relationship was open.

Speaking to camera, Loren, who had to go to the clinic to get seven days of medication – which he called “fun pills” – to clear his STD, says: “She’s very upset, and now I don’t even know if she will talk to me again.

“This could be the end of everything.”

But Faith was under the impression they were in a monogamous relationship.

To make matters more complicated, Loren had been on actively searching for women on the same dating app he met Faith on, and the little money he came over to the Philippines with went on his medication.

Talking about Faith, Loren says: “She’s the one upset. She’s very upset, and I don’t know if she will ever talk to me again.

Faith insisted that she wasn’t with Loren for his finances[/caption]

“This could be the end of everything.”

He went onto admit he knew Faith didn’t understand him when he said he wanted to spend nights at other people’s homes.

To add to this, Loren’s finances were questionable to Faith.

When Loren first touched down in the Philippines, he was travelling light – just $46 in his pocket.

Money troubles

He casually told Faith he had more cash tied up in a “pending charge” and was anxiously waiting for his paycheck to clear.

In a bid to ease the strain, Loren converted all his money into Philippine pesos, hoping it would stretch further.

Speaking to the cameras, Faith insisted she wasn’t with Loren for his finances; she believed there were plenty of opportunities to make money back in the U.S.

It seems that Loren and Faith are still together today. The trip featured in the show happened in November 2023, but they are currently navigating a long-distance relationship with Loren back in America and Faith staying in the Philippines.

Loren appears to have convinced Faith that he’s the one for her, but fans will have to wait for the rest of this season of 90 Day Fiancé: Before the 90 Days to see how their story unfolds.

Terry Bradshaw slams ‘terrible move’ by New England Patriots and confuses co-stars with Freddie Mercury reference

TERRY Bradshaw was furious with the New England Patriots’ drastic decision just five weeks into the season.

The Fox NFL Sunday star tore into the Patriots in a brutal rant – before making a confusing reference.

New England made the decision last week to start rookie quarterback Drake Maye.

The No. 3 overall pick in this year’s draft was thrust into the action after a 1-4 start to the season.

Veteran Jacoby Brissett was the starter under center but struggled behind New England’s banged up offensive line.

And Maye made his first start in Sunday’s defeat by the Houston Texans.

Speaking before the game on Fox NFL Sunday, Bradshaw raged, “This is a terrible move.

“Brissett was doing everything he could to keep that thing going but that’s a horrible offensive line.”

The former Pittsburgh Steelers legend then confused his co-stars as he made a musical reference.

“The one key word is pressure,” he said.

“Freddie Mercury, remember the song? You remember the song Under Pressure?”

After finally receiving an acknowledgement from host Curt Menefee, Bradshaw continued.

He said, “Drake Maye will be under pressure – this is a bad move.

“Five different offensive line combinations already and your starting center Mark Andrews has been out.

“This is a terrible idea.

“Jacoby Brissett deserved to keep starting and let this kid sit.”

Howie Long then accused Bradshaw of practising his lines in the mirror last night, to the laughter of his co-stars.

The original Tom Brady

Tom Brady was left lost for words after Terry Bradshaw admitted he used his identity.

Host Curt Menefee drew Brady’s attention to a 1983 newspaper report that a man called Thomas Brady underwent surgery.

That was actually Bradshaw while he was still in his playing days with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Bradshaw won four Super Bowls in his 13-year career under center in Pittsburgh.

The former Steelers quarterback explained, “When I checked in they said ‘you’re not going to get checked in under your name because you’ll get hassled, what do you want to go under?’

“I said, ‘Put me under Thomas Brady.’

“That’s how it happened.”

But Bradshaw hit back, “Howie you’re not going to believe this – I just came up with that.”

Maye finished with 20 passes from 33 attempts Sunday.

He threw three touchdown passes but also had two interceptions.

The Patriots were beaten 41-21 by the Houston Texans to fall to 1-5 this season.

They travel to London to take on the 1-5 Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium next Sunday.

Bath & Body Works under fire over candle that ‘looks like KKK’ as shoppers slam chain’s holiday design

BATH & Body Works has been criticized after shoppers pointed out a design issue with one of the chain’s festive candles.

Some claimed the holiday decoration unintentionally drew some comparisons to the white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan – which was formed in the nineteenth century.

The snowflakes on the candle were likened by some to the group’s infamous hoods.

Bath and Body Works launched its fragrance candle Snowed In but it has been swiftly pulled from store shelves.

And, it can no longer be bought on the chain’s website, according to NBC News.

Customers couldn’t hide their frustration after spotting the candle on sale.

“I’m truly disgusted by your ‘snowed in candle artwork,’” one shopper blasted.

They even claimed they would boycott the popular chain as a consequence.

Others claimed the chain didn’t consider the design, while some shoppers referred to the item as a klandle.

Some shoppers were stunned that nothing was flagged in the design process.

“How did that design ever make it to the shelves?” another shopper asked on X.

CHAIN APOLOGIZES

They claimed the decision to axe the candle was the necessary move.

Bath and Body Works chiefs have spoken out since the backlash.

“At Bath & Body Works, we are committed to listening to our teams, and customers, and committed to fixing any mistakes we make – even those that are unintentional like this one,” a spokesperson told Fox Business.

The company spokesperson apologized to shoppers who were offended by the design.

The chain is working to remove the item from its website and store shelves.

But shoppers rushed to defend the chain, stressing that the design looked like a snowflake.

“People are literally hoping and praying to be offended by something,” a shopper defending the chain said.

“It’s literally a close-up of the corner of a snowflake,” another customer said on Instagram.

“It’s obviously a snowflake cut out. Sheesh,” a third shopper chimed.

Others joked that the design looked more like aliens than snowflakes.

The U.S. Sun has approached Bath and Body Works for comment.

Everyone can see the numbers – but you have 20/20 vision & high IQ if you can spot the odd one out in 7 seconds

SPOTTING the numbers in this brainteaser is easy, but can you outsmart everyone and find the odd one out?

Time to put your vision skills and IQ to the test and crack this tricky brainteaser in just seven seconds or less.

a bunch of numbers are lined up in a row .
JagranJosh
Spot the odd number in this illusion[/caption]

The image above is known as an optical illusion, meaning there could be other not-so obvious elements to be found.

The challenge here is to spot the odd number that’s perfectly blended into the scene.

Everyone can quickly see the 56’s everywhere up against the yellow background.

But only those with 20/20 vision and a high IQ can solve this mind-bending puzzle.

Are you able to find where the odd number is or will you be left scratching your head?

It might seem a bit daunting at first, but the key is to carefully examine each section of the image.

You might wish to start from the top left corner of the image and work your way down, or maybe do the complete opposite – whatever gives you more confidence!

Another useful tactic is picking an element of the picture and analyse what’s around it – and what may be different.

Brainteasers are purposefully designed to trick our vision and can be used as simple determiners of intelligence.

How can optical illusions and brainteasers help me?

Engaging in activities like solving optical illusions and brainteasers can have many cognitive benefits as it can stimulate various brain regions.

Some benefits include:

  • Cognitive stimulation: Engaging in these activities challenges the brain, promoting mental agility and flexibility.
  • Problem-solving skills: Regular practice enhances analytical thinking and problem-solving abilities.
  • Memory improvement: These challenges often require memory recall and can contribute to better memory function.
  • Creativity: They encourage thinking outside the box, fostering creativity and innovative thought processes.
  • Focus and attention: Working on optical illusions and brainteasers requires concentration, contributing to improved focus.
  • Stress relief: The enjoyable nature of these puzzles can act as a form of relaxation and stress relief.

So you might want to try The Sun’s wide range of optical illusions created to stimulate the deepest parts of your brain.

In this mind-bending image, everyone can see the farm but you have 20/20 vision and a high IQ if you can spot the hidden heart in seven seconds.

Another tricky brainteaser features a gnarled tree but only those with high IQ can spot a sleepy cat hiding on it.

If that’s still not hard enough for you, then have a go at spotting the hidden broom amongst the clothes in less than five seconds.

Or you can have a go at figuring out the hidden message in this band’s cover art that has confused fans for years.

Lastly, puzzle fanatics have been left scratching their heads trying to find the lost feather in just 12 seconds.

Did you manage to spot the odd number? If so, congratulations!

Still struggling to find it? Have a look at the solution image at the bottom to find out where it is.

Did you know that solving optical illusions is a great way of training your brain and improving creative thinking?

RAPPER Yung Filly’s friend Chunkz has spoken out about the rape charges facing his former collaborator – who is stuck in Australia pending a police probe.

Filly, 29, has been banned from leaving the country as cops investigate allegations he raped and physically abused a woman last month.

The rapper, whose real name is Andres Felipe Valencia Barrientos, was arrested last week and charged with three counts of sexual assault.

He was also charged with four counts of sexual penetration without consent and one count of impeding a person’s breathing or circulation by applying pressure to the neck.

Do you have a story about Yung Filly? Contact eleanor.doughty@thesun.co.uk & katie.davis@the-sun.co.uk

YouTube personality Chunkz, real name Amin Mohamed, worked with him on several songs and comedic videos over the years.

Chunkz, 28, shared a video on Instagram, breaking his silence on the shocking allegations.

“Like everyone I’ve heard the reports coming out of Australia,” he said.

“While I understand many of you want my reaction on it, as this is an ongoing court case I hope you guys understand that I can’t and won’t be commenting on it publicly, so yeah I’ve just come on here to basically let you know the reasons as to why I can’t. Love.”

Filly was rapidly dropped by several brands and companies including FootAsylum, the Football Association (FA), Heinz and ASOS, after news of his arrest broke.

Cops investigating him say they have an “extremely strong” case that includes CCTV footage of the social media star on the night of the alleged offences.

Filly’s defence lawyer argued the victim was drunk at the time of the alleged ordeal on September 28, according to Channel 9.

Cops allege that Filly – who was born in Colombia but moved to the UK as a refugee when he was a child – raped her in his hotel.

The rapper was first arrested on Tuesday in Brisbane and transferred to Perth the next day.

He appeared in court where the prosecution said his alleged victim’s body is marked “by a history of violent acts”.

Filly was bailed following his first court hearing after stumping up $100,000AUD (£51,000) for bail.

He is banned from leaving the state and must also report to Perth Police Station in Northbridge regularly.

A downcast Filly was seen reporting there for the first time on Saturday, dodging cameras as he made his way in and back out.

He wore a dark baseball cap and a cream hooded jacket with black shorts and trainers as he jogged past reporters to enter the building.

Filly remained inside for just five minutes before leaving and once again refusing to speak to the journalists waiting outside.

He was seen again on Sunday in an all black outfit arriving at the same station.

Yung Filly is known for his comedic videos on YouTube where he shot to fame alongside fellow creators Beta Squad while also appearing in The Sidemen videos.

He then branched out to his own individual projects including podcasts, music and mainstream TV gigs.

He featured on Channel 4’s The Great Celebrity Bake Off in 2022 and has previously fronted the BBC’s Hot Property.

Who is Yung Filly?

YUNG Filly’s rise to fame saw him start out as a social media star.

The influencer got his big break on YouTube before moving into mainstream TV.

Although he goes by Yung Filly, his real name is Andres Felipé Barrientos.

He was born on August 6, 1995, and moved to the UK from Colombia when he was two years old.

Filly then relocated to southeast London during his childhood.

When asked what it was like growing up in the capital, he told Indy100: “I come from the bottom of the barrel…and that’s why I’m so grateful for the position I’m in now.

“My mum definitely shaped me with the lessons she taught me.

“She’s a single mum with three kids, my dad was a s*** dad so she just had to make it happen.

“She did loads of cleaning jobs. My mum worked at Poundland at the time I had some mad BBC series…just getting my mum out of the position she was in was just the biggest motivation.”

Filly is best known for being a member of the comedy group known as The Wall of Comedy.

He is affiliated with fellow YouTuber Chunkz and the pair have collaborated on many videos and tracks.

Over the years, Filly has also taken part in The Sidemen‘s Charity Football Match, organised by members Josh Bradley, Simon Minter, Tobi Brown, KSI, Ethan Payne, Vikram Barn and Harry Lewis.

Michael Strahan says ‘hold my beer’ and slams New York Jets on Fox NFL Sunday before revealing his Robert Saleh theory

MICHAEL Strahan was furious with the New York Jets’ decision to fire Robert Saleh this week.

And the former New York Giants legend had a theory on why the Jets acted.

Robert Saleh was fired after the New York Jets’ loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London[/caption]

Strahan told his Fox NFL Sunday co-stars “hold my beer” before revealing his theory.

Saleh was fired by the Jets two days after their loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London, England left them 2-3 for the season.

And Strahan reckons the Jets were trying to stay relevant in the New York sports market.

It comes with the New York Giants having won a couple games in the NFL.

And both the New York Yankees and New York Mets have made deep runs in the MLB playoffs.

Both Big Apple baseball teams are one series victory away from reaching the World Series.

And Strahan said Sunday, “A lot of chat in New York with the Yankees and Mets in the playoffs and the Giants are winning again.

“The Jets said ‘hold my beer,’ let’s join the club.

“They want to be talked about too so they fire their head coach.”

Strahan questioned the timing of the Jets’ decision given they’re still in a close AFC East race and Aaron Rodgers’ return from a long injury layoff.

“Really I just don’t understand this move at this point in the season,” Strahan said.

“You have to look at the general manager Joe Douglas.

“He’s had two head coaches, three offensive coordinators, three quarterbacks and this thing is not turned around.

“I really don’t understand what the Jets are doing this early in the season.

“They have a quarterback coming back off injury and things take time.

Michael Strahan's NFL career

Michael Strahan is one of the most recognizable faces on television.

But he came into his media career off the back of a hugely successful stint in the NFL.

Strahan spent 14 years all with the New York Giants from 1993 to 2007.

He was a seven-time Pro Bowler and helped them win the Super Bowl in 2007 – ending the New England Patriots’ hopes of a perfect season.

Strahan was also a two-time NFL sacks leader and also won Defensive Player of the Year.

The ex-Giants star set the single-season sack record with 22.5 in 2001 – a feat which was matched by J.J. Watt exactly 20 years later.

He is one of the best defensive stars to have ever played the game – finishing with 141.5 career sacks and 854 tackles.

“If they win against Buffalo, they’re in first place, they panicked too early.”

And he concluded, “But now they’re in the conversation in New York with everyone else.”

Saleh was fired Tuesday with Jeff Ulbrich serving as interim head coach.

New York’s offense has looked off all season despite having four-time MVP Rodgers under center.

And Jets owner Woody Johnson decided to act after consecutive losses to the Denver Broncos and Vikings.

The former rugby union star’s divorce took place after the news that the BBC let him as well as co-stars Sue Barker and Phil Tuffnell go from A Question Of Sport.

The popular trio were shocked to learn they were being dropped from the show in a major revamp.

But things are now looking up for Dawson as he found a new girlfriend.

And that is none other than personal trainer and content creator Elizabeth Kerry.

Elizabeth has over 11,000 followers on Instagram alone and shares plenty of photos as well as videos of her workouts.

Her bio reads: “There is no passion to be found playing small – in settling for a life that is less than the one you are capable of living.”

Dawson married ex-wife Carolin – a former model turned marketing manager – back in 2011.

However, they decided to take their relationship to a “new direction” in separate ways that would still see them co-parenting their children.

Dawson tweeted: “We know this will be a surprise to most but after 11 years together Carolin and I have decided our relationship needs a new direction, bringing our marriage to an end.

“The love for our beautiful boys grows stronger day by day as does our friendship as co-parents.

“To our dear friends please continue to support us as positively as you can for the next stage of our lives.

“It’s vital that Alex and Sami understand that we will always be a united family.”

China totally encircles Taiwan with warships, warplanes & aircraft carrier vowing ‘we are prepared for battle’

CHINA has deployed a swarm of fighter jets and warships to encircle Taiwan in a “stern warning” to the island.

Beijing vowed “we are prepared for battle” as it launched a new round of war games around Taiwan on Monday – sealing off key ports as warplanes took to the skies.

China said the latest drills were a warning shot to Taiwan’s “separatist” forces – and the president’s refusal to acknowledge the island as part of China.

State TV aired a chilling map showing nine areas around the island where drills are taking place – with Taiwan tracking 25 warplanes, seven warships and four Chinese government ships so far.

Beijing also deployed its Liaoning aircraft carrier – with nighttime footage showing a J-15 fighter jet taking off from the decks.

China views Taiwan as its own territory – and has not ruled out force to bring it under its control.

Xi Jinping’s military has increased its encircling of Taiwan’s skies and waters in the past few years – holding joint drills with its warships and fighter jets on a near-daily basis near the island.

Taiwan blasted the latest exercises as “irrational and provocative” and dispatched “appropriate forces” in response – scrambling fighter jets armed with missiles.

The Joint Sword-2024B drills are taking place in the Taiwan Strait and areas to the north, south and east of Taiwan, China’s Eastern Theatre Command said.

It said the war games “serve as a stern warning to the separatist acts of Taiwan independence forces”.

And it claimed they were “a legitimate and necessary operation for safeguarding state sovereignty and national unity”.

China’s military published a map of the drills – two on the island’s east coast, three on the west coast, one to the north and three around Taiwan-controlled islands next to the Chinese coast.

Ships and aircraft are approaching Taiwan in “close proximity from different directions”, it said.

They are focusing on sea-air combat-readiness patrols, blockading key ports and areas, and attacking maritime and ground targets.

China’s Navy Senior Captain Li Xi said the navy, army air force, missile corps have all been mobilised.

“This is a major warning to those who back Taiwan independence and a signifier of our determination to safeguard our national sovereignty,” he said.

The US slammed China’s actions as “unwarranted” – and said they risk “escalation”.

And Taiwan’s Defense Ministry has deployed warships to designated spots in the ocean for surveillance – and “stand ready”.

It also deployed its mobile missile and radar groups on land to track the vessels.

The drills came four days after Taiwan celebrated the founding of its government on its National Day.

In a defiant speech, Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te said China has no right to represent the island – and vowed to resist annexation or invasion.

After the speech, China warned that Lai’s “provocations” would result in “disaster” for the people of Taiwan.

In a propaganda video, China showed a cartoon caricature of Lai with pointed ears like a devil and fighter jets and warships around the island.

The footage ends with an image of a fist turning into hammer – and a sword pointed at Taiwan.

China’s state broadcaster CCTV warned: “The greater the provocation, the tighter the reins.”

And fiercely nationalistic newspaper Global Times said on X: “There is only one China in the world!”

The PLA’s Liberation Army Daily newspaper also declared: “Those who play with fire get burned!”

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry said “all officers and soldiers of the country are in full readiness” in the “face of enemy threats”.

Taiwan’s presidential office said China should face up to the fact of the existence of the Republic of China – Taiwan’s formal name – and respect Taiwan’s choice.

It should “refrain from military provocations that would disrupt the status quo of peace and stability in the region, and threaten Taiwan’s democratic freedoms,” the office said.

In Washington, US President Joe Biden is monitoring the drills – and there was no justification for them after Lai’s “routine” speech.

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said: “We call on the PRC to act with restraint and to avoid any further actions that may undermine peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and in the broader region.”

China’s foreign ministry hit back on said on Monday: “Taiwan is a part of China, and the Taiwan issue is China’s internal affair that brooks no foreign interference.”

The last war games took place in May when dozens of warplanes filled the skies above Taiwan.

The drills continued for more than 24 hours with 27 warships and 62 warplanes blockading the island.

China also held massive military exercises around Taiwan and simulated a blockade in 2022, after a visit to the island by Nancy Pelosi, who was then speaker of the US House.

China routinely states that Taiwan independence is a dead end and that annexation by Beijing is a “historical inevitability”.

Why does China want to invade Taiwan?

TAIWAN insists it is an independent nation after splitting from mainland China amid civil war in 1949.

But China claims Taiwan remains a part of its territory with which it must eventually be reunified – and has not ruled out the use of force to take the island and place it under Beijing’s control.

The island, which is roughly 100 miles from the coast of south-east China, sees itself as distinct from the Chinese mainland, with its own constitution and democratically-elected leaders.

Taiwan sits in the so-called “first island chain”, which includes a list of US-friendly territories that are crucial to Washington’s foreign policy in the region.

This also puts it in an ideal situation to slow a Chinese attack on the West.

And with tensions between the two nations high, Taiwan is likely to aid China’s enemy if it means keeping its independence.

Taiwan’s economy is another factor in China’s desperation to reclaim the land.

If China takes the island, it could be freer to project power in the western Pacific and rival the US, thanks to much of the world’s electronics being made in Taiwan.

This would allow Beijing to have control over an industry that drives the global economy.

China insists that its intentions are peaceful, but President Xi Jinping has also used threats towards the small island nation.
