I’m a soap expert and this is what Corrie need to do with the next lesbian storyline

SWARLA is the name on the lips of many Coronation Street fans across the country at the moment.

Many fans are begging for DS Lisa Swain (Vicky Myers) and Carla Connor (Alison King) to get together.

1994 saw the first ever pre-watershed lesbian kiss in Brookside[/caption]

When scouring through X, – formerly known as Twitter – you can’t help but notice the passion that fans have for this upcoming romance.

Some enthusiasts have even gone as far as to make t-shirts celebrating the forthcoming couple.

However ITV bosses need to tread carefully when it comes to LGBTQ stories, as fans may have been let down in the past.

When thinking about the history of lesbian representation on soaps, at times it has been less than perfect.

Brookside was the soap to air the first ever pre-watershed lesbian kiss back in 1994 with Beth and Margaret.

Rather than being pioneers, Coronation Street, Emmerdale and EastEnders were instead reactionary and were left to eventually follow suit.

When they did air more scenes, it seems that many characters have not had happy endings.

Zoe Tate (Leah Bracknell) was the first ever lesbian character in Emmerdale, and fans were moved when she first came out in 1993.

After a string of romances with other characters, her relationship with fiancee Emma Nightingale crumbled when she decided to couple up with Susie Wilde instead.

In Coronation Street, proper lesbian representation has seemed to be few and far between.

The nation has always loved the character of Sophie Webster (Brooke Vincent) and they were especially gripped with her romance with Sian Powers.

The duo were meant to be the first lesbian couple to tie the knot on the ITV soap, but alas, it was not meant to be.

Sophie eventually admitted her guilt for cheating on her partner after she kissed someone else and she ran away from the church.

Her last romance was with Paula Martin (Stirling Gallacher), but the lawyer left the cobbles after Sally Webster (Sally Dynevor) was freed from prison.

Coronation Street's 2024 shock exits

Corrie has said goodbye to several cast members this year. Let's break down who's left the famous soap:

Eliza Woodrow (Savannah Kunyo) has said farewell to Corrie to start a new life in Germany.

The youngster moved to live with her dad Dom Everett, who went back on the £10,000 bribe Eliza’s grandfather Stu had offered to keep him out of her life.

Paul Foreman (Peter Ash) will bow out of the soap this summer when he loses his fight with motor neurone disease (MND) in tragic scenes.

After being diagnosed last year, the fan favourite was devastated to learn he only had months left to live.

Viewers know he is planning to take his own life to end his suffering.

Summer Spellman (Harriet Bibby) departed the cobbles after being offered the opportunity of a lifetime to study in America.

Though she struggled to decide with her stepdad Paul’s impending death from MND, she was convinced she had to live her life to the full.

Simon Barlow (Alex Bain) has struggled with the sudden departure of his father Peter from the cobbles.

The Weatherfield legend left his family and loved ones behind on Boxing Day, 2023, when his wife Carla Connor encouraged him to travel around the world with a friend.

Simon’s been on a downward spiral ever since and his exit could end in tragedy.

Alya Nazir is set to leave the cobbles as actress Sair Khan prepares to go on maternity leave ahead of the birth of her first child.

It looks likely she’ll be heading to Dublin after securing a lucrative new job, leaving her colleague and fling Adam Barlow behind.

Show stalwart Sue Cleaver, who plays Eileen Grimshaw, is taking a break to star in the Sister Act The Musical UK tour. She will be back filming in May once her dates on the tour come to an end.

Her character left the Street after her son Jason broke his back after falling off a moped in Asia.

Kate Connor (Faye Brookes) was another prominent LGBTQ character and we all really wanted her to have her happy ending with Rana Habeeb (Bhavna Limbachia).

Sadly though, the factory roof collapsed on top of Rana and she passed away on their wedding day.

EastEnders has not had that much in terms of notable lesbian characters.

Tina Carter (Luisa Bradshaw-White) may have said that she was a lesbian, but she was killed by Gray Atkins (Toby-Alexander Smith) before she could develop any proper relationships on the Square.

Many fans need a proper couple to invest in and a pairing to really go the distance and Corrie have the opportunity to do this.

Joshua Rom

Sonia (Natalie Cassidy), experimented with her sexuality in 2005, but as we all know she very much went back to men shortly after.

The most prominent storyline has only really been recently when Suki Panesar (Balvinder Sopal) and Eve Unwin (Heather Peace) have been catapulted to the forefront.

Heather recently left a very cryptic message on her profile on X, which read: “I’ve been an out lesbian for 30 years. All representation is important.

“When I came out it was hardly there. The fact we’re getting more is a beautiful thing.”

Who lives where on Coronation Street?

Here is where all of the residents of Weatherfield's main street live

  • 1 Coronation Street – The Barlow family (Ken, Tracy, Steve, Amy)
  • 3 Coronation Street – The Bailey family (Aggie, Ed, Michael)
  • 5 Coronation Street – The Winter-Brown family (Gemma, Chesney, Joseph and the Quads)
  • 7 Coronation Street – The Alahan family (Dev, Asha, Aadi)
  • 9 Coronation Street – The Dobbs family (Tyrone, Fiz, Evelyn, Cassie, Hope, Ruby)
  • 11 Coronation Street – The Grimshaw family (Eileen, Todd, George, Mary, Sean, Dylan)
  • 13 Coronation Street – The Webster family (Kevin, Abi, Jack, Alfie)
  • 15a Coronation Street – Dee-Dee Bailey and Adam Barlow
  • 2a Coronation Street – Craig Tinker
  • 4 Coronation Street – The Metcalfe family (Sally, Tim)
  • 6 Coronation Street – The Nazir family (Yasmeen, Alya, Stu, Eliza)
  • 8 Coronation Street – The Platt family (Gail, David, Shona, Max, Lily)
  • 10a Coronation Street – Rita Tanner
  • 12 Coronation Street – Brian Packham

She added: “Our stories are all different. There’s not just one story.
So let’s tell stories.”

And she is right.

There is more than one story to be told and despite the drama on BBC and ITV, it is possible for a couple to last.

We are living in the 21st century where longterm LGBTQ couples exist and thrive.

I have witnessed first hand the pain of the IVF process for same sex couples, but also the satisfaction, joy and fulfilment after.

Corrie even has a history with surrogacy, look at Tina McIntyre’s (Michelle Keegan) storyline when she refused to give the baby up to Gary (Mikey North) and Izzy (Cherylee Houston).

Why can’t that couple be a lesbian couple, just like everybody else?

Many LGBTQ couples in soapland either do not last, or some of the characters are axed by bosses which of course forces a split, especially for lesbians.

So I genuinely hope that Swarla could become more than just a gimmick.

Many fans need a proper couple to invest in and a pairing to really go the distance and Corrie has the opportunity to do this.

I fear that if this is yet another fling or a short term storyline that is a flash in the pan, loyal viewers may be let down.

Bake Off’s Ruby Bhogal reveals she turned down Dancing on Ice after childhood trauma as she announces huge career move

RUBY Bhogal is a TV regular six years after finishing as runner-up in the famous Great British Bake Off tent.

But there’s one big entertainment show you’ll never see her on – despite an offer from studio bosses.

The baking queen, 35, turned down a place on Dancing On Ice due to a painful childhood memory.

In an exclusive interview with The Sun ahead of the release of her new Chocolate Butter, Ruby said: “I was asked after Bake Off to do a few of the reality shows. One in particular included ice skating.

“Considering I broke my arm when I was a child ice skating, that was a flat no from me straight away.

“But the ones that I do enjoy doing, I don’t know why I do it to myself because my general knowledge is terrible, but I can’t ever say no to a quiz show.

“I do it more so for entertainment when I’m watching it back because I will always do dreadfully bad.

“I did Weakest Link. I don’t even know where I came out in that. I filmed Mastermind just the other week.

“But it’s a great experience. It’s great fun. You get to meet so many different people and, you know, I tend to meet people that my mum watches on the soap and I do it mostly for her.”

Prior to it being axed by Channel 4, Ruby spent three years as a guest chef on Steph’s Packed Lunch and relished every moment, even the times things didn’t quite go to plan.

She said: “I think the way that I look at it is in, you know, TV is fantastic and it’s a really great opportunity.

“It was an incredible experience because live TV is no joke. Live TV and cooking is no joke. Anytime there was a mistake, watching what you’ve got to say, being engaging, it was such a phenomenal experience.”

Away from screens, kitchen whizz Ruby has had a very busy year releasing her latest book, One Bake Two Ways, which includes 50 recipes that can be easily adapted for vegans, and tomorrow her game-changing new product, Chocolate Butter, will be released.

Created in partnership with All Things Butter, the butter brand owned by celebrity chef Thomas Straker, the invention arrived in a “lightbulb moment”.

Ruby said: “We started talking about the sweet butters, I was like, ‘why does this not even exist? This is exactly what’s been missing from my kitchen’.

“I grew up very much enjoying chocolate spread sandwiches as a kid. It’s something that I love to indulge in still now as an adult. And we wanted to make sure that whilst we were developing and exploring the idea of chocolate butter, we wanted to make sure it still had that kind of nostalgic feel, but really hitting that note of something that’s luxurious, something that’s indulgent.

Ruby is engaged to the BBC’s James Stewart[/caption]

“It’s the first of its kind as well, there’s nothing like this on the market. So it’s really new, innovative, but also when you start to use it, you’ll kind of think, ‘why have I not always had this?’ Which is what I love about it.”

There’s also an ethical element to the twice-churned, 100 per cent British cream butter in that one percent from each sale goes to farming charity Rabi.

Not only is Ruby’s professional career in full swing, but so is her personal life.

LOVE STORY

Earlier this year she got engaged to her environmentalist BBC presenter fiancé James Stewart.

However, wedding planning is still in its formative stages.

“We don’t know when it’s going to happen. We don’t know where it’s going to be,” admitted Ruby.

“But I know I want a dessert table, which will feature lots of cakes, lots of trees. I mean, if I can’t utilise the people from Bake Off to bake me a cake at that point, what’s the point of going on the show? So I’m going to have multiple cakes. Definitely some sort of chocolate cake in the mix as well, which I will definitely make.

“I think I probably lean more on the traditionalist. I grew up in a Punjabi household so we’re going to be merging a big fat Indian wedding, along with something a bit more traditional.

“My family is huge. And my partner’s family, I could probably count on one hand, so he’s going to have to gather the troops somewhere so he’s not outnumbered, but it’s going to be a good affair, that’s for sure.”

It’s fair to say, guests are going to be guaranteed full bellies and satisfied smiles on their faces.

Man Utd ‘open to selling Harry Maguire at shock cutdown price in January’ despite stats showing he’s their best CB

MANCHESTER UNITED are ready to sanction a cut-price January exit for Harry Maguire, according to reports.

The former Red Devils captain, 31, has entered the final nine months of his contract at Old Trafford.

United do possess an option to extend the deal by a further year, but will first look to sell the centre-back.

According to the Daily Star, Erik ten Hag‘s side will listen to offers starting at just £10million for Maguire.

The England star previously attracted strong interest from West Ham during the summer of 2023.

Despite having fallen out of favour under Ten Hag, Maguire opted to stay at Old Trafford, eventually winning back his place in the team.

This season he has been in and out of the line-up, starting three of United’s seven Premier League games.

The Red Devils stand to make a huge loss on Maguire, having paid £85million for him in the summer of 2019.

Even in the summer of 2023 he would have commanded at least £30m.

Man Utd recruited Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich ahead of this season in a further bid to push Maguire back down the pecking order.

Statistically, however, the Sheffield-born ace remains United’s strongest defender in several categories.

Compared to De Ligt and Lisandro Martinez this season, Maguire has on average won more duels and aerial duels, while also making more interceptions.

Prior to the international break, Maguire scored a last-gasp equaliser for ten-man United in their 3-3 draw with Porto in the Europa League.

He then sustained an injury against Aston Villa, being replaced by De Ligt at half-time.

After the game he wrote on Instagram: “I’m frustrated to pick up an injury at the weekend, will be a few weeks on the sideline but I’ll come back stronger.”

United return to action next Saturday, when they host Brentford at Old Trafford.

Coronation Street’s Gail Platt’s exit storyline revealed after Helen Worth quits soap – and it’s set to be historic

CORONATION Street’s Gail Platt is set to marry for the SEVENTH time before her swansong from the cobbles.

Actress Helen Worth has quit her iconic role after 50 years playing unlucky in love Gail and now reports suggest she will don one more wedding dress before she bows out.

Coronation Street icon Gail Platt is set to marry again before leaving Weatherfield for good[/caption]

Will she tie the knot with Jesse Chadwick and make him husband number seven?[/caption]

Gail has already been married six times – with only one husband surviving her.

She first married Brian Tilsley – twice – before he was murdered, she then tied the knot with nurse Martin Platt but split over his affair.

Gail moved on with Richard Hillman, but their marriage ended when he was exposed as a serial killer and died trying to kill Gail and her family.

Joe McIntyre was next but he died while trying to fake his own death in an insurance scam, and her next husband Michael Rodwell, a burglar, died of a heart attack at the hands of serial killer Pat Phelan.

The Sun exclusively revealed how Martin star Sean Wilson was making a shock comeback to reunite with Gail but just days into filming the comeback was axed by bosses with Sean quitting for “personal reasons”.

John Thomson was hastily drafted in as a replacement with him reprising his role as children’s entertainer Jesse who bosses say met Gail in Thailand – despite not crossing paths in Weatherfield.

And now according to the Sunday Mirror, Gail is set to find happiness with Jesse before leaving Weatherfield for good.

A source told the publication: “Helen and Gail have been part of the fabric of Coronation Street since 1974, so only a truly big exit storyline would be fitting for her.

“The wedding scenes are being filmed at the moment and when they air, viewers will be gripped.

“As with any soap wedding, they will have to wait to see whether Gail makes it down the aisle or not.

“And with a character as popular as her, they will be hoping she finally gets a happy ending.”

Announcing her exit earlier this year, Helen said: “This year felt like the perfect time to leave the show after celebrating 50 years in the most wonderful job on the most wonderful street in the world.

“I made the decision at the start of the year and spoke to the producers who were very kind and understanding.

“I have been truly blessed to have been given the most incredible scripts week in week out, and to have worked with fantastic actors, directors and a brilliant crew.

“The past 50 years have flown by and I don’t think the fact that I am leaving has quite sunk in yet.”

Executive Producer Iain Macleod added: “The words ‘legend’ and ‘icon’ get used a lot these days but they genuinely do apply to Gail and to Helen Worth.

“However, given her humility, I know Helen won’t thank me for saying so! In Helen’s hands, Gail has been a huge part of Coronation Street for five decades and at the centre of some of the most memorable storylines – often deriving from her catastrophically bad luck in choosing husbands!

“Her ill-fated marriage to Richard Hillman was one of the most ground-breaking stories in soap history and cemented Gail’s already established status as one of the Corrie greats.

“As the matriarch of the Platt clan, her affectionately prickly relationships with her kids and flighty mum Audrey epitomise what makes the show great: complicated family dynamics brought to life impeccably by Helen’s dramatic and comedic chops, alongside those of her fictional clan.

Gail's biggest Corrie storylines

Over the years the character of Gail Platt has been the centre of several major plots.

Here we take a look back over actress Helen Worth’s biggest storylines:

Teenage daughter’s pregnancy

One of Gail’s most controversial storylines was in 1999.

It came when her 13-year-old daughter Sarah became pregnant.

Multiple marriages

Gail holds the record for the series’ most married female character.

She has been wed a whopping six times, each one worse the last.

Married to a serial killer

One of Gail’s multiple marriages saw her wed Richard Hillman, who turned out to be a serial killer.

At the climax of the storyline, 19 million fans tuned in to watch Hillman drive his wife and her family into a canal.

Scrapping on The Street

Gail has proved over the years she can’t resist a good scrap.

Her most memorable bust-up saw her attack Eileen Grimshaw on the cobbles in 2004 while in her dressing gown.

Jail bird

In 2010, Gail found herself wrongly banged up in jail.

She was wrongfully arrested for murdering her 4th husband Joe McIntyre.

“Gail has given us countless hours of entertainment but it should also be said that Helen herself is a consummate professional and a thoroughly good egg.

“Everyone connected to the show will miss having her around the place just as much as the viewers will miss having her on their screens and we wish her all the very best for the future.”
