My partner uttered four tragic words before I lost my family, I’m begging you to listen to my warning this Christmas

WAKING up in a hospital bed, Scott Peden knew how lucky he was to be alive.

Heavily bandaged and blackened with burns, he instantly recalled the horrific house fire he had managed to escape.

The house fire was caused by a faulty second-hand battery[/caption]

But turning to his mum Glenda, 65, who was sitting beside him, it soon became clear something was very wrong.

She had to break the devastating news that he would never see his wife or their two young children again.

Scott was the sole survivor of the blaze which had ripped through the family home while they slept.

Scott says: “I still can’t process what’s happened. I lost my entire family, everything, in a matter of minutes.”

Scott is now warning Christmas shoppers to be wary of buying second hand e batteries after losing both his partner and their children in the fire 18 months ago.

Scott Peden bought a second-hand battery after his own was stolen, and he needed his bike to get to work.

But two days after purchase, it exploded with such ferocity that it destroyed his home and killed his partner, Gemma Germeney, 31, and their two young children, Lilly, eight and Oliver, four. The family’s two dogs also perished.

Scott miraculously pulled through after four weeks in a coma and is now trying to rebuild his life and warn others of the dangers of second-hand lithium batteries.

Scott, 31, from Cambridge, says: “I grieve every day for the family I have lost, but this time of year is especially tough because Gemma and the children had birthdays, and my sister was murdered over New Year.

“At Christmas, when people are buying e-bikes as gifts, I am pleading with people not to buy second hand batteries.

“There needs to be stricter regulations over the resale of batteries, they should be checked and certified.

“We had smoke alarms, but because it was a lithium battery, we didn’t stand a chance. I lost everything in the fire, and I have to start all over again.

“Gemma should have celebrated her birthday on December 14th, Oliver should be 6 on December 23. Lily should be turning nine in January. Instead, they are gone. The only positive to come from this is me making sure it does not happen to anyone else.”

We were a happy family, Gemma was very maternal and loved being a mum.

Scott Peden

Scott and Gemma met at college in Cambridge as teenagers and moved in together ten years ago. Along with their two children they had a greyhound-boxer cross, named Bitsy, and a Dalmatian called Rolo.

Scott says: “We were a happy family, Gemma was very maternal and loved being a mum.

“She was also very artistic. She loved drawing, puzzles and colouring. She had a dream of being a baker and, with Oliver due to start school, she was looking at returning to work.

I still can’t process what’s happened. I lost my entire family, everything, in a matter of minutes

Scott

“I worked full time at Marks and Spencer, but with a young family, money was tight.”

To help out, Scott’s mum, Glenda, bought him an e-bike early in 2022, which he used to travel to work.

He says: “The e-bike was brilliant. I did shift work, so couldn’t rely on the buses, and it was too far to walk.”

But in June 2023, after he had nipped out to buy dog food, his battery was stolen from outside a local shop. Faced with no way of getting to work, Scott ordered a second-hand replacement on ebay.

He says: “A new battery cost £600, so when I found one on ebay for £300, I thought it was a bargain.”

Scott left the battery to charge downstairs, in the hallway. But on the second night, he and Gemma were woken at 12.45am by a huge bang. When Scott ran to investigate he found the entire staircase in flames.

He says: “The bang was like a bomb going off. The stairs were engulfed in flames; the walls, the banister, the whole lot was alight. I knew we had no chance of making it downstairs.

“I tried screaming for help out of the window, but nobody came and so I jumped out, into the back garden, breaking my heel as I landed.

“I got in through the back door and realised immediately the e-bike was the source. I tried to throw the battery outside, but the door was so hot, it burned my hands, and then the key melted.

“The fire was spreading, and I was choking, and I realised there was no way through.”

Scott still remembers the tragic final words Gemma said to him.

“I ran back out to the garden, hoping to persuade Gemma and the children to jump,” he says.

The 8 fire safety checks you should do in your home every night

TO avoid a devastating fire in your home, there are some checks you should be conducting every night, according to Gov.uk.

  • Close inside doors at night to stop a fire from spreading
  • Turn off and unplug electrical appliances unless they are designed to be left on – like your freezer.
  • Check your cooker is turned off
  • Don’t run appliances such as washing machines, tumble dryers and dishwashers overnight
  • Turn heaters off and put up fireguards
  • Put candles and cigarettes out properly
  • Make sure exits are kept clear
  • Keep door and window keys where everyone can find them

“I heard Gemma shout: ‘I can’t get out,’ and then there was nothing.

“The house was ablaze, and I collapsed onto the children’s trampoline behind me. I was aware of someone patting me down and realised I was on fire.”

Neighbours called for help and stayed with Scott until firefighters and paramedics arrived. Scott saw Lilly’s body carried out of the house and passed out with the trauma.

He was placed in a coma for four weeks, and treated at Broomfield Hospital, a specialist burns unit in Chelmsford.

Glenda flew back from a holiday to be at her son’s bedside.

She says: “I didn’t even recognise him at first. He was heavily bandaged, and his face was very swollen and blackened with burns. I was told it was touch and go.

“The lithium battery fumes, which are toxic, had got into his lungs and caused severe damage.”

A heart of gold

Over the coming weeks, Scott survived several brushes with death, including three bouts of pneumonia, a cardiac arrest and an infection. When he woke, he remembered all the details of the fire, but did not know if his family had survived.

Glenda recalls: “That was the worst thing, having to tell him that they didn’t make it.”

At a joint funeral, Scott played Ed Sheeran’s ‘Perfect’ which was his and Gemma’s song. The family’s ashes have since been buried together.

Scott says: “I still can’t process what’s happened. I lost my entire family, everything, in a matter of minutes.

“We had so much to look forward to, and I am dreading this new life, on my own. I don’t even have photos to remember them by, everything I owned was destroyed.”

He was already no stranger to tragedy as this Christmas also marks the second anniversary of his sister’s death.

Stephanie Hansen, 39, was murdered by her house mate, Sheldon Rodrigues, 30, in December 2022.

Scott says: “Stephanie was absolutely lovely, inside and out. She had a heart of gold and spent her spare time volunteering with community action groups.

“She was passionate about the environment and nature and was a member of a litter picking group.

Christmas is especially hard, and I am speaking out to warn other families of the dangers.

Scott Peden

“I’d met Rodrigues lots of times. He’d even spent Christmas with my family in the past. It was clear to anyone that he was obsessed with her. But we could never ever have dreamed that he would hurt her.”

Stephanie’s body was discovered on New Year’s Eve 2022 in her West London flat and her killer, who carried out the attack when she refused his advances, was jailed for life in March this year.

Losing both Stephanie and his closest family has left Scott feeling crushed.

He says: “As well as losing my entire family, I’ve had to go through the trauma of my sister’s murder, and the trial.

“Christmas is especially hard.”

Scott is now calling for greater regulation around e batteries, and wants to highlight the risks associated with buying second hand, to prevent further tragedies.

“I thought I was saving money, which is something all young families try to do, especially around Christmas,” he says. “I would never have had the battery in my home if I’d known there was a risk.”

Six Love Actually plot holes that ruin the film and Hugh Grant’s biggest issue with his famous romantic gesture

LOVE Actually was one of the first modern Christmas movies to switch out Santa in favour of romance.

However, long-time fans of the film, as well as some of the actors who feature in it, have pointed out some issues with the intertwining plots.

While the film as remained a Christmas classic both in the UK and abroad, there are some aspects which have left viewers scratching their heads over the years.

Fans have pointed out logistical errors as well as plot lines which have not aged too well since the movie’s 2003 release.

Record low

One of the plot line’s follows the life of Alan Rickman’s character Harry and his wife Karen, played by Emma Thompson.

Anyone who has seen Love Actually is all too aware of the devastating scene involving a Joni Mitchell CD.

Harry gifts it to his wife Emma, an avid fan of the singer, who then realises that the expensive necklace he has been hiding must be for another woman.

However, viewers were quick to point out that Karen, who is describes herself as having a “true love” for Joni Mitchell, would likely already own the record.

This makes Harry’s gift all the more devastating for his heartbroken wife.

Phone-y friend

And while Karen may have one of the saddest relationships in the film, some viewers have pointed out she’s not exactly innocent herself.

At the beginning of the film, we see a quick phone call between Karen and her close friend Daniel, played by Liam Neeson.

Daniel, who has just lost his wife, rings his his friend for support but she swiftly ends the conversation as she has to attend to her children.

The busy mum finishes the phone call by saying: “It doesn’t mean I’m not terribly concerned that your wife just died.”

This is all well and good, after all people can’t be expected to drop everything all the time for their loved ones.

That is until we learn that this conversation takes place the morning of Daniel’s wife’s funeral.

While viewers later see Karen lend a sympathetic ear as Daniel struggles with how to help his stepson Sam, her sympathy doesn’t last long.

A couple of scenes later, she tells Daniel: “No-one will shag you if you cry all the time.”

“This is my favorite part of Love Actually, when Liam Neeson is feeling sad about his dead wife and his best friend Emma Thompson tells him to get over it,” wrote one X user.

Prime opportunity missed

Colin Firth in Love Actually.
Hugh Grant pointed out that his character definitely had access to his love interest’s home address (stock image)

And Karen’s brother David, played by Hugh Grant, also experiences his own love story shortly after taking office as the Prime Minister.

While being introduced to the staff at Number 10, he instantly falls for quirky Natalie from “the dodgy end of Wandsworth.”

So when it comes time for his big romantic gesture, David heads to the area, knocking on doors until he finds his employee.

However, as Hugh Grant has pointed out, the Prime Minister is probably one of the most qualified people in the country to find a member of the public’s address, especially if they’ve worked for him.

“You watch these things and a lot of it is utterly preposterous,” he said in an interview with Vanity Fair.

“Of course the Prime Minister would have some civil servant who could find out exactly where she lived on the street, as many people have pointed out.”

As well as this, it seems highly unlikely that the PM would be allowed to wander the streets with limited security detail on a whim.

Catch flights and feelings

Thomas Brodie-Sangster in Love Actually.
Alamy
Thomas Brodie-Sangster’s adorable airport run was met with sceptism in the years following the 9/11 attacks (stock image)[/caption]

And speaking of security risks, the young Sam, played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster, makes an equally unlikely romantic gesture towards the end of the film.

Not wanting his crush Joanna to return to the States without knowing how he feels about her, he persuades his step-dad to drive him to Heathrow airport.

Also, his step-dad reveals he “knows a shortcut” to the airport, which a lot of Londoners would likely debate.

However, the pair don’t manage to catch Joanna before her family have almost reached the gate so Daniel encourages his step-son to sneak past security.

Sam runs past the queue and even leaps over a worker as he passes through the metal detector.

While Heathrow security give him a good chase, the simple slap on the wrist he gets as a results seems highly unlikely in a post-9/11 world.

For a film that directly addresses the terrorist attack in its opening monologue, the blunder is all the more glaring.

“The ending of Love Actually is RIDICULOUS. The boy running through the airport would be rugby tackled by police and arrested for terrorism,” pointed out one X user.

Love language…barrier

A woman brings pastries and tea to a man typing on a typewriter outdoors.

Colin Firth falls in love with his Portuguese housekeeper barely speaking any sentences to each other throughout the entire film (stock image)[/caption]

Colin Firth’s Jamie is yet another prominent character in the film, who jets away to the French countryside to mend his broken heart after walking in on his girlfriend and brother in bed together.

He uses the alone time to work on his novel, a crime thriller, accompanied only by Portuguese cleaner Aurelia, played by Lucia Moniz.

While Jamie can manage a handful of French, he has no Portuguese while Lucia doesn’t speak a word of English.

This leads the pair to communicate, bond, and eventually fall in love through hand gestures and lots of nodding.

After parting ways, Jamie returns to London and immediately enrolls in language classes.

He then flies to Portugal and tracks Lucia down at her job as a waitress, stopping by her family home along the way.

This grand romantic gesture makes you question how a writer had the capacity to track down his love interest abroad while the Prime Minister struggled to do when given the street address.

The author then proposes to his former housekeeper, despite having only shared a handful of sentences with her.

“Colin Firth in Love Actually will marry the Portuguese housekeeper he had two half conversations with within a couple weeks,” wrote one confused X user.

Wrong cue

Andrew Lincoln holding a sign that says, "To me, you are perfect."
Both Keira Knightley and fans of the film have pointed out the questionable move that has become the film’s most famous and spoofed scene (stock image)

And perhaps the most iconic scene from the ensemble film is Andrew Lincoln’s Mark declaring his love for his best friend’s wife Juliet, played by Keira Knightley.

While the actress spoke about how creepy she found the concept in an interview with the Today Show, viewers pointed out a glaring issue with Mark’s plan.

Many fans of the movie have pondered what would’ve happened if Juliet’s husband was the one to answer the door.

“Thinking about what Andrew Lincoln would’ve done if Keira Knightley’s husband would’ve opened the door in Love Actually,” wrote one X user.

“In case the husband answered the door instead of Keira Knightley, the guy in Love Actually also had a card that said: ‘Hi dude! Good to see you! Got to head home now but thought I’d pop by to say hey,'” said another person.

Keira also commented on the close proximity of the already questionable move.

“It is creepy, I mean, it’s sweet but it is kind of creepy,” Keira said as she shared her thoughts on the gesture.

“It’s a little bit stalkery and also my husband is sitting just behind me.”

It’s also worth noting Mark recorded the entire wedding, zooming in on Juliet the entire time, but for some reason never thought his friends would ask to see the footage of their own nuptials.

I found a secret way to instantly unlock thousands of free Hollywood movies and hit TV shows on Sky

SKY customers can unlock a whole host of extra movies and TV shows at no extra cost thanks to a handy new feature.

The broadcaster rolled out a load of changes to Sky Glass and Sky Stream this week.

Watch big hits like The Hunger Games for free[/caption]

Top of the list was the ability to cast content from an iPhone using Apple AirPlay.

This means you can select videos from your phone and beam them straight to your telly.

What many viewers may not realise is that by having AirPlay available it opens up a whole world of extra apps you can’t currently get through Sky directly.

Not all apps support AirPlay – some only allow Google‘s alternative Cast.

And some that do are paid, but there are others that are free – and legal too.

One of the latest big additions to the free streaming scene is Tubi, which landed in the UK earlier this year.

The platform hosts a number of big Hollywood blockbusters for free, supported by ads.

This includes the Hunger Games series starring Jennifer Lawrence, psychological thriller Doonie Darko, Rambo: Last Blood and Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls, to name a few.

On the TV front you have classics like Shameless, Location, Location, Location and Peep Show.

And you don’t even need to sign up.

Just download the Tubi app from the App Store and then tap on the cast button in the bottom right.

Then, select the movie or TV show you wish to watch and it will appear on your Sky device screen.

There are other apps to check out too, such as Pluto TV.

Pluto has as host of on-demand content which also works with AirPlay, big name titles include:

  • Big Daddy
  • Magic Mike
  • Click
  • Geordie Shore
  • Most Haunted
  • Taxi
  • Robocop
  • Skins
  • Catfish
  • Pointless

Just look for the AirPlay icon at the top.

How to cast on Sky

Casting to your Sky device is done with Apple AirPlay, meaning it only works with an iPhone, iPad, Mac or HomePod

It’s also important to add that AirPlay is only available on Sky Glass and Sky Stream.

For it to work, your Sky device and your iPhone (or other Apple gadget) have to be on the same Wi-Fi network.

If you’re using an app like Netflix, you need to look for a casting icon which looks like a small TV

Tap this and select your TV from the list.

When using Apple AirPlay on your Sky TV for the first time, you’ll need to enter a code that appears on your screen to confirm it’s you using it.

If you want to show photos or videos on your Sky Glass or Sky Stream device follow the instructions below:

  • Go to the Photos app
  • Select the photo or video you want to cast
  • Tap the share icon in the bottom left of your screen (the box with an arrow pointing upward)
  • Select AirPlay from the options
  • Tap your Sky TV from the list
  • Close the app on your phone at anytime to stop casting

Tyson Fury breaks silence on Oleksandr Usyk defeat in angry backstage rant after storming out of ring

TYSON FURY claimed he was “robbed” following his defeat to Oleksandr Usyk last night.

The Gypsy King, 36, lost by unanimous decision in Riyadh.

Oleksandr Usyk triumphed 116-112 on all three scorecards[/caption]

All three judges scored the contest 116-112 in favour of Usyk.

Fury, however, was left perplexed by the result.

The public did not initially get to hear from the former heavyweight champion, after he stormed out of the ring.

Backstage, however, SunSport did spot Fury briefly catching up with former trainer Ben Davison.

The towering 6ft 9in star bellowed: “Robbed there.”

He then asked Davison, 28, what he thought of the bout.

When Davison said he believed it was “tight” but that Fury was going to get the decision, the Gypsy King claimed: “I swear to God I thought I won by at least three rounds.”

Fury left the ring before speaking to the crowd, storming off after Daniel Dubois, who holds the IBF belt, confronted Usyk.

Carl Frampton, working for TNT Sports, labelled Dubois’ intervention “disrespectful”.

Staggered promoter Frank Warren did speak to TNT on Fury’s behalf ringside.

He said: “I am dumbfounded, to give four rounds out of the 12 is impossible.

“One judge didn’t give him any round from round six onwards, that’s impossible.

“It’s crazy, and I’m calm and collected, that is a nonsense. Their faces, the management of Usyk had him winning.”

ROBO-FLOP

Earlier this week it was announced that an AI judge would also score the contest.

While the AI-card did NOT count towards the official decision, it did give fans an alternative viewpoint, based on analytics.

When Fury learned that the technology had scored the contest 118-112 in Usyk’s favour, he was not impressed.

The Gypsy King said: “F*** all computers. More jobs for humans.”

After the bout, Fury was consoled by wife Paris, who he claimed to have not seen for three months leading up to the contest.

Fury vs Usyk 2 round by round: How SunSport scored the controversial heavyweight thriller

OLEKSANDR USYK took another controversial decision over Tyson Fury to regain his heavyweight throne.

Seven months on from their split-decision thriller, this time the scorecards were unanimous 116-112 all in Usyk’s favour.

The Gypsy King stormed out of the ring as his promoter Frank Warren was left stunned by the cards.

Here’s how SunSport’s Wally Downes scored the fight…

Round 1

The rules were ignored and Fury arrived at 11:15pm local time with a beard that would make Brian Blessed’s chops feel naked.

If we thought his face fuzz looked overgrown, we were stunned to see the size of his belly when the cameras caught him topless in his dressing room.

His red shorts were so high that you couldn’t even see much of his gut, an inch higher and the 20st beast would have had the option of tucking his nipples down there too.

Fury tried to intimidate Usyk with the final face-off, widening his eyes like a monster but the champ remained ice cold.

They swapped jabs and fenced with their lead hands. Usyk drove left hands into his wobbling belly and then clipped him with a head shot to snatch the opener. Usyk.

Round 2

Usyk lands a scoring one-two to the head as soon as the session starts but then returns to the body and lands lefts, one even makes Fury stumble.

But the Gypsy King lands a treble-jab and then a meaty right hand to take the round.

Still no signs of the body blows and uppercuts that won him the middle rounds of the May fight. Fury

Round 3

Three times Usyk scores with a jab to the body and left hand upstairs.

Fury struggles to deal with the pressure. Fury lands a little check hook and even tries the southpaw stance.

But all his threats to skin and cook the bog-eyed rat or ugly rabbit prove empty. Usyk.

Round 4

Fury makes a bright start with a chopped right hand.

Bit Usyk almost whacks his whiskers off with two left hands that score well.

But Fury pings back with a big right hand that forces Usyk back.

Then that uppercut returns and cuts through Usyk’s guard. Draw.

Round 5

Fury takes control instantly when a right hand is the perfect start to the session

Then the Brit gets warned for rabbit punches as he bids to bully the champ.

Usyk is then walked into a lead left uppercut and then he starts shipping body blows. Usyk scuttles off and has to recover. Fury.

Round 6

Fury in trouble. The challenger’s bloated body starts to sweat and Usyk keeps targeting it with his power-punch left.

Then he goes head hunting and clips Fury’s skull.

The Morecambe giant is buzzed and worried, his head got rocked backwards. He hides the rest of the round. Usyk

Round 7

A quiet round only really features a crisp Fury one-two and a single Usyk left. Draw.

Round 8

A one-two-hook works for Usyk as he pushes all of the pace an pressure and Fury tries to hide his 20st target.

An accidental clash of heads thankfully leaves no cuts.

Fury does launch a limp attack but Usyk smiles back and shakes his shaven head. Usyk.

Round 9

Fury starts to tire, he has so much timber to lug around and lumberjack Usyk loves chopping him down.

He’s too big to dance and rub and counter.

He is playing super-fit Usyk’s game. Usyk.

Round 10

Fury lands a rare uppercut and attacks Usyk’s body. He takes the centre of the ring but then eats a couple of shots.

Fury tries to hold and lean and sap at Usyk’s engine. But he is punished with a left to the cheek.

Big left from Uysk lands and scatters Fury sweat beads off his head.

But Fury cracks back with an uppercut. But Usyk’s pressure and punches win in. Usyk.

Round 11

These could well be the deciding rounds. Usyk is busier, Fury throws an uppercut but it only grazes his guard.

Fury walks onto a tippy-tappy combination but then two serious shots. The wind is coming out of his giant red sails.

Usyk is relentless and bouncing and prodding and punching and Fury is 20st and flagging. Usyk

Round 12

Fury starts like a man who knows he needs at least a lockdown but that helps Usyk counter him.

A combo of three straight punches score for the Ukraine icon.

But Fury keeps swinging and slashing and pulling up the shorts that slip down his back and love handles from all the sweat Usyk has drained out of him.

With a section of the ungrateful crowd booing and whistling they slug it out for the final ten seconds finish. Usyk

SunSport’s scorecards: Usyk 118-112 Fury.

Arabella has been showing off her baby bump in a crop top and a lingerie two-piece yet this weekend poked fun on her lack of a visible bump.

The star – who is due in May – took to her Instagram page to post a snapshot showing her in a skinny black T-Shirt and leggings, paired with white socks.

ITV2 beauty Arabella was seen posing in a cosmetics store before switching up her look for glam going out attire.

She pulled on a black top and mini skirt, paired with a blazer and silver jewellery, for her classy look.

The mum-to-be added semi sheer tights and heels, before styling her blonde locks into loose waves.

Yet as she panned the camera for a close-up of her tummy, Arabella joked in her caption: “Not quite sure where the baby is hiding.”

She then filmed herself on the night out with her mates and joked: “When your life used to be espresso martinis on nights out and now it’s sparkling water and not sure how I feel about it.”

BELLA’S JOURNEY

Arabella has undergone a rollercoaster year after failing to find a lasting connection with All Stars partner Adam Maxted in the villa.

The reality star was enjoying a whirlwind romance with millionaire businessman Billy Henty, after they were first spotted together in August this year.

She then shared the happy news that she is pregnant with her first child.

Alongside a sweet reveal video on Instagram, Arabella wrote: “Dreams do come true…

“Baby Henty due May 2025.

“You already make our hearts full and we can’t wait to meet you little one.”

Love Island All Stars 2025 rumours

Love Island All Stars will be back for its second series in 2025 - and rumours are already rife as to who will be making a comeback this time around.

After the second All Stars series was announced in May, show boss Mike Spender said: “Lots of people have been in contact about it, lots of fun people, from series one onwards.

“We cast it because we knew what was going on behind the scenes of who was getting with who and now even more stories have come out.

“I think we will now save ex-islanders for All Stars.”

One rumoured name for the next series is data engineer Harry Baker.

Harry, 25, arrived in the villa as a bombshell in Series 11. He soon ‘stole’ Grace Jackson after making his debut.

Arriving late in the run, he only lasted for a few days before being dumped alongside Lola Deloca.

Despite the hunk’s brief stint, viewers have called for Harry’s return.

One upset fan wrote: “Get you in All Stars next”, to which Harry cryptically replied by posting ‘shrugging’ emojis.

Arabella’s baby daddy Billy is co-founder of a company specialising in biohacking and regenerative medicine, with clinics in London, Canada and Greece.

In the announcement video, Billy could be seen with his arms around a stunning Arabella who was wearing a bikini.

She was clutching pictures of their baby scans on a beach and looked over the moon. The glowing mum-to-be then wrote out their news in the sand in sweet scenes.

Arabella previously told The Sun of her desire to start a family and said: “All I’ve ever wanted is true love and that fairytale dream. I’m 32, I want to get married and have babies.

“I haven’t got lots of time left and I know more about myself now than ever.

“This is my last shot to find my happily ever after.”
