Sugarcane Producers at Risk: CCC Condemns Retrenchments
The Citizens Coalition for Change (CCC) has spoken out against the planned retrenchments at Triangle Limited, calling for urgent government intervention to protect workers and small-scale sugarcane producers.
“The phased retrenchments, set to begin in February 2025, will have devastating consequences,” stated CCC Secretary for Information and Publicity, Willias Madzimure.
“Dire Consequences for Workers”
The CCC highlighted the severe impact on employees and their families, warning of rising unemployment in an already strained economy.
“Thousands of workers and their families will be plunged into economic uncertainty,” said the CCC in its statement.
The ripple effects, the CCC noted, will extend beyond the company. Communities dependent on Triangle Limited for economic stability will face increased poverty, reduced household incomes, and a growing strain on social services.
The coalition emphasised that the country’s current economic climate offers little hope for alternative employment for those affected.
Impact on Small-Scale Producers
The CCC also drew attention to the plight of small-scale sugarcane farmers, most of whom are black entrepreneurs. These farmers heavily rely on Triangle Limited to sustain their businesses.
“The reduction in demand for sugarcane will threaten the financial stability of these producers, potentially leading to widespread business closures,” the statement continued.
This, the CCC warned, would result in a significant decrease in local economic activity and worsen the already precarious situation for many families.
Calls for Action
The CCC, identifying itself as a labour-focused party, has called on Triangle Limited to reconsider its strategy and engage with workers’ representatives to explore alternatives.
“We urge the government to take immediate, decisive action,” the CCC stated, outlining several recommendations:
- Stabilise the currency to foster a more predictable economic environment.
- Curb cheap imports to protect local industries and jobs.
- Provide support to industries like Triangle Limited and small-scale producers to withstand economic pressures.
The CCC declared its commitment to standing in solidarity with affected workers, their families, and small-scale sugarcane producers.
“Together, we can build an economy that works for everyone, ensuring no one is excluded,” Madzimure concluded.
