Cheating in ZIMSEC Maths Exam Backfires: Epworth Duo Sentenced to 210 Hours of Community Service
Two men from Epworth have been sentenced to 210 hours of community service after a failed attempt to cheat in a ZIMSEC Mathematics exam.

Epworth Duo Plot to Cheat in ZIMSEC Maths Exam
Paddington Chataika (36) and Joseph Murimba (33) appeared before the Epworth Magistrates’ Court, facing charges under the ZIMSEC Act. The charge? Conniving to impersonate a registered exam candidate.
On October 16, 2024, the pair hatched a plan. Chataika, a registered candidate for the Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (ZIMSEC) Mathematics Paper 2, handed his passport to Murimba, who would sit for the exam in his place. Murimba successfully took the exam and thought they were in the clear. However, a whistleblower had already alerted ZIMSEC officials to their scheme.

Epworth Men Sentenced After Failing to Cheat in ZIMSEC Math Exam
ZIMSEC officials, accompanied by the police, arrived at the examination centre. By the time they got there, Murimba had already finished writing the exam. Both men were arrested and charged.
The court found the duo guilty and sentenced them to 12 months imprisonment, with 6 months suspended. The remaining 6 months were also suspended on the condition that both Chataika and Murimba complete 210 hours of community service.

Hwange Man Steals From Drinking Buddy
In an unrelated case, James Sibanda (33) appeared before the Hwange Magistrates’ Court on charges of theft.
On October 5, 2024, Sibanda and the complainant, a 55-year-old man, spent the evening drinking beer at Ko-Mpofu Bar. Afterwards, they went to the complainant’s house to sleep. The next morning, the complainant discovered that Sibanda had disappeared along with his REDMI Note 13 Pro mobile phone.
After reporting the theft to the police, an investigation led to Sibanda’s arrest and the recovery of the stolen phone. Sibanda pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months imprisonment.
