A concrete beam plummeted from a crane at a building demolition site on Rama IV Road, near the Lumpini intersection in Bangkok, damaging three vehicles but fortunately causing no injuries. The incident occurred yesterday afternoon during the dismantling of the Srifuengfung Building.
Police are in discussions with the building’s owner regarding compensation for the damage to three pickup trucks. Police Lieutenant Thanasak Phanchote confirmed that these talks are ongoing.
According to Aekvarunyoo Amrapala, spokesperson for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), demolition approval for the building was granted on June 24. The accident unfolded around 4pm when a crane was hoisting a concrete beam alongside other materials from the sixth floor.
An electrical glitch in the crane’s operator cab led to the sling slipping, resulting in the concrete beam plummeting onto the road below.
Following the accident, the Bang Rak district office issued a cessation order for all work at the site. Aekvarunyoo stated that the order was implemented immediately to ensure safety and prevent further incidents, reported Bangkok Post.
Bangkok’s deputy governor, Wissanu Sabsomphon, along with experts from the Public Works Department and the Thailand Structural Engineering Association, will conduct a thorough inspection of the building today to assess any potential risks and determine the necessary steps forward.
