Head coach Derek Lalonde has been relieved of his coaching duties, effective immediately.
Assistant coach Bob Boughner will be following him.
The Red Wings are one of the worst teams in hockey this year, owning a 13-17-4 record.
Their -23 goal differential is the second-worst in the NHL.
The move to fire Lalonde and Boughner comes as the Red Wings are on a three-game skid.
They have lost nine of their last 12 games.
Lalonde was in his third seasons with the team, owning an 89-86-23 record with the team in his time as head coach.
He won the Stanley Cup twice as an assistant with the Lightning before taking the Detroit job.
Todd McLellan is joining the Red Wings as the replacement for Lalonde.
McLellan signed a multi-year contract with the team, making it his fourth job in the NHL.
He has spent time with the Sharks, Oilers, and Kings in his career.
McLellan was fired by the Kings in February after four seasons with the team.
He was 164-130-44 in those four-plus seasons.
McLellan’s career record is 598-412-134, going to the playoffs nine times in his career.
He went to the Western Conference Finals with the Sharks twice in 2010 and 2011.
The job with the Red Wings marks a return to Detroit for McLellan, who got his first job in the NFL as an assistant in 2005 with the team.
He served under Mike Babcock for the team’s Stanley Cup run in 2008.
Trent Yawney is joining McLellan’s coaching staff as an assistant coach.
Yawney spent five seasons as an assistant coach with the Kings from 2019-24.
He also spent time with the Oilers, Ducks, Sharks, and Blackhawks.
