The iPhone maker’s AI-powered Apple Intelligence took users to a BBC news notification which erroneously stated that Luigi Mangione, the prime accused in the Brian Thompson shooting, had tried to commit suicide.
The incident has once again magnified the fears expressed by critics of AI and its ramifications.
This is not the first time that AI-generated content has led to the spread of false information.
At the start of this year, Google-hosted chatbot Gemini had given bizarre tips to users, such as adding glue to a pizza.
BBC is a reputed media organization, and when screenshots of a grouped news notification showing a BBC notification that said Luigi Mangione had shot himself were shared on social media, it led to widespread panic and confusion, with conspiracy theories starting to float on the internet.
It is reported that BBC has contacted Apple about the incident, even though it has not verified the screenshots officially. Apple has also not responded and has yet to address the issue.
A BBC spokesperson, in a statement, said:
“BBC News is the most trusted news media in the world. It is essential to us that our audiences can trust any information or journalism published in our name, and that includes notifications. We have contacted Apple to raise this concern and fix the problem.”
