In a recent ruling, anyone who bought gasoline on behalf of a business or as an out of state visitor in California over a two-year period may be eligible for a pay out.

Drivers simply need to fill out an online form to claim – and it takes mere minutes to do.

To be eligible, you must have purchased gasoline – either regular, mid-range, or premium – between the dates of February 18, 2015, and May 31, 2017, from a retailer for your own use and not for resale.

Also, at the time of purchase, you must either have been a person who did not reside in the State of California, or a business, regardless of location.

This comes as the federal district court in San Francisco, California, granted approval of a $13.9 million class action settlement amid allegations of “anticompetitive behavior” in the state’s gasoline market.

SK Energy Americas, Inc. and Vitol Inc., along with two other individuals, are being accused of manipulating the spot market for refined gasoline and gasoline blending components.

In May 2020, a class action lawsuit was filed against them – alleging that they manipulated the price of the products traded on the “spot” market.

However, the defendants deny that they did anything wrong.

Motorists must submit their claim form by January 8, 2025, with the settlement approval hearing on February 20, 2025.

Potential claimants can find a link to the online form here.

Drivers can, of course, decide to opt out if they potentially want to take on another lawsuit on the same issues, and there is also room to object to the claim if you are unhappy with the settlement.

What is a class action lawsuit?

A class action settlement is compensation paid out to individuals involved in a class action lawsuit.

Class action lawsuits are legal actions brought on behalf of a group of people who have suffered a similar grievance.

In this instance, a representative plaintiff will sue on behalf of the group, instead of each individual bringing their own lawsuit.

Class actions often settled through mediation – a process where the court orders the parties to meet and try to come to a settlement before the case goes to trial.

This is because a trial can be expensive, time-consuming, and risky for each side.

This comes as drivers are facing massive parking fines thanks to thoughtless Amazon contractors who abandoned their trailers in a quiet town and turned it into a truck stop.

Desperate lawmakers in a Massachusetts suburb passed a new rule increasing fees to $50 after drivers parked trucks and trailers on small streets for days at a time.

And elsewhere, a furious driver has revealed how he fought an $100 parking ticket – only for the fine to be waived days before the case was due to go to trial.

Patrick McCleary was ready to represent himself in court after finding the ticket on his car at the end of a day on the beach.
