Negotiations between Pete Alonso and Mets seems to be heating up.
On Friday, former Mets general manager Jim Duquette reported that Alonso’s camp, led by agent Scott Boras, reached out to the Mets with a re-signing offer.
“Pete Alonso’s camp has offered the Mets a three-year deal with an opt-out, according to league sources,” Duquette posted on Twitter/X. “This deal is only available to the Mets at this time. No deal is known to be imminent at this time, and Alonso’s agent Scott Boras declined (to) comment.”

Last month, former Mets infielder turned MLB insider Carlos Baerga reported that New York had extended an offer to the 30-year-old slugger. According to Baerga“Alonso is expected to sign soon,” according to a translation of his Spanish tweet, but the offer appears to be closer to the Mets’ preferences: shorter term, higher average annual value.
The Mets’ offer to Alonso was for three years, $90 million, with annual opt-out options. This would make the four-time All-Star the highest paid first baseman by average annual value in MLB.
At the time, it was believed that Boras and Alonso’s goal was to get a long-term contract worth 200 million dollars. This would exceed the amounts given to first basemen Matt Olson and Freddie Freeman, despite Alonso coming off an offseason by his standards.
The expectation is that Alonso will re-sign with the Mets on a short-term, high-AAV deal rather than the long-term $200 million contract that Boras is seeking for Alonso. If so, then, depending on what the dollar amount was on Alonso’s offer to the Mets, a deal should be considered imminent.
