Previous Denver Broncos starting quarterback Teddy Bridgewaterwho retired earlier this year to pursue a head coaching role at the high school level, is returning to the NFL.
Bridgewater retired to become the head coach at Miami Northwestern, a team that went 4-6 last season. This year, the same team went 12-2 and won a state championship. Bridgewater expressed an interest in returning to the field immediately after that win, and that has come true.
Bridgewater will sign with the Detroit Lions to be the primary backup to Jared Goff.
Broncos fans will remember Bridgewater for his short, everyday run with the team in 2021. Then head coach Vic Fangio surprisingly named Bridgewater the team’s starter for the season over Drew Lock. Bridgewater made 14 starts for the team, which went 7-7, with 18 touchdowns and over 3,000 yards passing.
He didn’t play badly, but he also wasn’t the guy who helped lift the team to the next level. He signed with the Miami Dolphins the following offseason before playing in Detroit last year. Now the Lions have brought him in to serve a greater purpose.
Teddy Bridgewater has a chance to win a ring
The Lions are poised to make the Super Bowl and want to add insurance at a key position. Bridgewater’s experience could be invaluable should Goff get hurt.
Sophomore running back Hendon Hooker has been the team’s current backup, but he has just nine career pass attempts. The move makes sense for Detroit and is one that Lions head coach Dan Campbell said has been in the works for some time.
Dan Campbell said he has been in contact with Teddy Bridgewater for a while. The Lions sign him with confidence heading into the playoffs.
“It’s a different world that we’re getting ready to enter,” he said.

The Lions currently hold the No. 1 seed in the NFC and while he’s just along for the ride, Bridgewater could get a chance to add a Super Bowl ring to his high school championship.
