In Nam Nao district, Phetchabun province, temperatures have dropped to a chilling -3 degrees Celsius, with frost covering the ground and car rooftops. In 2023, the temperature reached a record low of -5 degrees Celsius. The provincial governor urged close monitoring of the situation.
A Facebook user reported that today, January 13, they awoke at 4am to find the temperature at -3 degrees Celsius. Accompanying their post were images and videos depicting frost on the ground and ice crystals on car rooftops.
This occurred in Ban Huai Ya Khreu, located in Nam Nao district, known for its cold climate, especially during winter when frost is a common spectacle.
In recent days, the weather has been particularly cold with strong winds, preventing frost from forming. However, temperatures at night have been consistently between 1 and 2 degrees Celsius. The individual anticipated that temperatures would drop below zero due to the calm winds and increasing cold by around 7pm when it was 2 degrees Celsius.
Ban Huai Ya Khreu is situated on the Phetchabun mountain range, with an elevation of 750 to 800 metres above sea level. It is recognised as one of the coldest villages in the area. In 2023, temperatures fell to -5 degrees Celsius.
Phetchabun governor Saran Yoo Meethongkam directed local administrative bodies, relevant agencies, and residents to stay informed about weather conditions 24/7. They are advised to caution the public in high-risk areas about potential dangers, including health risks from the rapid drop in temperature and fire hazards due to dry and windy conditions.
Officials are tasked with analysing weather patterns and risk factors. If severe weather is predicted, coordination with civilian, military, police, and volunteer networks is essential to aid those affected.
Local leaders are encouraged to use various communication channels, such as village group chats, social media, and public announcements, to keep residents informed, reported KhaoSod.
In case of emergencies, swift action is required to assist victims and assess damages, with immediate reporting to Phetchabun’s provincial disaster prevention and mitigation command centre via the Line app or telephone/fax at 056729792.
