Ganesh Chaturthi is the major festival of Hinduism, which falls on the Chaturthi date of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. This year, Ganesh Chaturthi will fall on 7 September 2024. This festival is celebrated as the birth anniversary of Lord Ganesha, and on this day the idol of Lord Ganesha is established and worshipped for 10 days, which is completed with immersion on the day of Anant Chaturdashi. The festival of Ganesh Chaturthi is especially celebrated with great pomp in Maharashtra, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu, but now its importance is increasing all over India.
On the day of Ganesh Chaturthi, the people install the idol of Lord Ganesha in their homes. On this day, the house is cleaned after taking a bath, and the idol of Lord Ganesha is decorated according to a special worship method. During the puja, Lord Ganesha is offered yellow clothes and anointed. Tilak made with vermilion and sandalwood is smeared on him. Five kinds of flowers, durva, modak, and other kinds of sweets are offered to him. At the end of the puja, the Ganesh Chalisa and his Vedic mantras are chanted and Aarti is performed. Tamasic substances are not taken up during the puja.

In this, Ganesh Utsav starts from the date of Chaturthi of Shukla Paksha of Bhadrapada month. On this day, the idol of Ganesha is established and he is worshipped for 10 days. Ganesha is immersed on the tenth day.
The legends say that Mother Parvati created Lord Ganesha from sandalwood paste and left Lord Ganesha to guard the house while she was bathing. Lord Shiva saw Ganesha at the place where Mother Parvati was taking her bath, and for not letting him go out of there, Lord Shiva beheaded Ganesha. Seeing this, Mother Parvati got angry and threatened to end the world. Then, Lord Shiva brought the head of a baby elephant and placed it on Ganesha. Ganesha then became famous as an elephant-headed god.

Ganesha is especially fond of modaks – that is laddoos, sweet dumplings made out of jaggery and coconut. Several kinds of modaks along with laddoos are prepared on this day and offered to Lord Ganesha.
