General Motors is recalling popular family car over risk of explosion as drivers warned to park outside immediately

GENERAL Motors has announced the recall of a popular family car over fears it could explode without warning.

The auto giant has already had to call in over 140,000 of the same model nationwide due to a similar issue.

GM has recalled two variants of a popular family EV over an explosion risk

GM issues the recall through its subsidiary Chevrolet, in partnership with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).

Under the notice, certain models of the Chevy Bolt EV and EUV (the electric SUV version).

The firm already had to recall 142,000 units over the past three years, but now a further 107 produced between 2020 and 2022 have been identified.

The problem apparently comes down to a potential battery fault that affects the thermal regulation of the battery.

At states of particularly high or low charge, this can lead to the power cells overheating and spontaneously bursting into flames.

Chevy has stated that it has not yet been made aware of any cars actually catching fire but that they have identified this as a real risk.

Owners are being urged to park their vehicles outside, unplug them overnight and not allow them to charge above 90% and below 70miles of range.

It is also advised to charge more frequently to maintain this range.

Drivers can also select Target Charge Level mode from the central touchscreen to limit how much the battery can charge up.

Fortunately, there is a relatively easy fix coming in the near future.

Owners can take their cars to the nearest Chevrolet dealership to have updated software downloaded onto its system.

Technicians will install an “Advanced Diagnostic Software” that will constantly monitor the state of the battery and protect it against fire risks.

Anyone affected by the issue will be contacted by post by December 16.

The letter will invite them to come to the dealership and receive the repair free of charge.

It comes after Nissan’s CEO broke his silence as the company confirmed it would slash production and cut jobs.
