Even in Gujarat also, a special New Year occasion is celebrated with its different name, known as ‘Bestu Varas’ or ‘Padva’. ‘Bestu Varas’, or ‘Padva’ is celebrated on the first day of the Shukla Paksha of the Kartik month, which initiates on the day of Govardhan Puja or Annakoot Puja.
Gujarati New Year in Gujarat is celebrated from the very next day of Diwali, which falls on the Shukla Paksha of Kartik month in the Hindu calendar. This day is symbolic for business profit and prosperity. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped, and new account books are opened for success in business, known as ‘Chopda’.
Gujarati New Year is falling on 2 November 2024, on the day of Saturday. It is calculated according to the Tithi and there Pratipada Tithi is 6:16 PM 01 November 2024 till night 02 November 2024 at 8:21 PM. The same day, people across the nation decorate their houses with cleanliness, new dresses, and Puja.
People follow the traditional customs of Gujarati New Year. Puja is organized in homes where all the members participate. Delicious sweets are made at home by women, and sweets are shared among each other. Fireworks are also done on this day, and people wish their friends and relatives. In this era of modernity, people send wishes through messages, and social media also.
Govardhan Puja or Annakoot Puja is performed on the day of Gujarati New Year. This puja is the worship of Lord Krishna, Govardhan Mountain and Mother Cow. On this day, 56 or 108 types of dishes are specially prepared and offered to Lord Krishna. On the day of Annakoot, you can also perform Vishnu Puja to get rid of troubles in your life.
According to legend, when Lord Krishna told the Gokulvasis that their real religion is to farm and protect cows, they stopped worshipping Indra. This infuriated Indra, and he flooded Gokul. Lord Krishna protected the Gokulvasis by lifting up the Govardhan mountain on his little finger. From then onwards, Govardhan mountain started being worshipped and it began to be celebrated as a New Year festival.
This New Year is also called the financial New Year. On this day, the old account book is closed and a new account book is opened. In Chopra Puja, special worship of Goddess Lakshmi is done so that the next financial year gets profitable results.
