Chhath Puja is one of the festivals that are celebrated with great pomp in many parts of North India, especially in Bihar, Jharkhand, Uttar Pradesh and Nepal. It is a festival of great significance because it involves a four-day fast to the Sun God, wherein the devotees worship the Sun. The specialty of this puja is that it wishes for the longevity and health of the child. It is said that Chhath Puja was initiated by the queen, when she sought the Sun God for her son’s health.
The Panchang according to it states the festival of Chhath Puja is celebrated on the Shashthi Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. The festival of Chhath Puja in the year 2024 will start from November 5 to November 8. The very first day of this festival initiates with Nahai Khay, in which devotees clean the house by bathing and consuming satvik food.

5 November (Tuesday): Nahai Khaai
6 November (Wednesday): Kharna
7 November (Thursday): Sandhya Arghya
8 November (Friday): Usha Arghya
Puja Process
Chhath Puja has different processes over four days:
Nahay Khaai: Devotees clean up, eat gourd, and also have rice on this particular day.
Kharna : The entire day women, don’t eat, as soon as the sun falls kheer and roti is offered.
Sandhya Arghya: On the last day, devotees go to the banks of a river or pond to offer arghya to the rising sun. Thekua and fruits are offered in puja thali over here.
Usha Arghya: On the last day, arghya is being offered to the rising sun, and all the members of the family gather together to do the puja.
This festival is not only the symbol of religious faith but also a cultural heritage of North India. Chhath Puja has increased awareness regarding cleanliness for rivers and water sources, thereby contributing towards environmental conservation. The feeling of love, unity, and brotherhood in the society is also developed through this festival.
