Religious belief has it that Lord Krishna initiated the custom of cow grazing on Ashtami date of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month. That’s why cows are worshiped on this day. This year Gopashtami is to be celebrated on the day of Sunday, 9th November, 2024. As per the Panchang of this day, Ashtami date is going to be from 11:56 pm of November 8 to 10:45 pm of November 9.
Cow is given the status of a mother in Hinduism. So, worshiping the cow on Gopashtami is an important thing. On this day, cows are decorated and worshiped. According to the legend, 33 crore gods and goddesses reside in the cow and worshiping them will give happiness and prosperity in life.
Once, when Lord Krishna refused to give the annual offering to Indra, Indra got angry and started torrential rain in Braj. Lord Krishna saved the people of Braj by lifting the Govardhan mountain on his little finger. When Indra accepted his defeat, the festival of Gopashtami started being celebrated.
