The night of October 31 marks a festival that is held every year, associated with ghosts, spirits, and horror. The day has its roots in ancient Western religious and cultural traditions, especially the Celtic civilization. It is also associated with the Christian religion’s All Hallows’ Day. This day is known as Allhallowtide, and it is devoted to the saints and souls who have contributed immensely in their lives.
However, in the present age, this day symbolizes ghosts, horror stories, and fantastic fun costume parties. On this day, mainly from the Western side, children as well as grown-up adults dress up as ghosts. Many don these masks so as to bring in an awesome horror scene in parties.
The history of Halloween is a mythological association that hails from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain. It symbolized that winter was on its way with the harvest season gone, and it was believed that dead souls return to earth on this particular day. The soul returns to earth at this time, seeking their share, and try to take their share from the crop. This fear is the reason behind people lighting fires and wearing scary masks so that they can avoid these spirits.
After that, when Christianity spread, this ancient festival in the forms of All Saints Day or All Hallows Day was adopted. All the saints were remembered on that day and on the following day, November 1, All Souls Day. Actually, the word Halloween comes from All Hallows Eve, i.e., the eve of all the saints.
Why do people dress up like ghosts on Halloween? This is an interesting question. Its reply is also hidden in Celtic traditions. As I mentioned earlier, the Celtic people used to believe that on this day the souls return to earth, so they used to put up scary masks so that the ghosts could not recognize them and go away from them. Gradually this has changed its tradition in modern times and taken the form of a costume. People nowadays, besides dressing up as ghosts, dress up as all sorts of film and fictional characters.
Trick-or-treating is a unique practice among children. In this, they go from door to door asking for sweets and those who do not give them sweets are lightly mocked (tricks). This tradition also originated in Ireland and Scotland and later gained popularity in other western countries including America. Presently this too has started gaining popularity in countries like India, especially in metro cities where the influence of western culture is more.
Halloween has now become a rather big business festival and no more religious or cultural festival in the present era. Every year, people in America spend billions of dollars to celebrate this festival. Spending on costumes, decorations, sweets, and parties is now a part of Halloween. According to a report presented by the National Retail Federation in 2023, consumers spent around $12.2 billion on Halloween. This number is increasing every year as the number of people celebrating this festival is also increasing.
