Halloween is one of those festivals celebrated on 31 October, which goes deep with history and cultural relevance as marking the transition between fall to winter and start of dark season. Every year, millions of people commemorate this day with different sorts of colourful costumes, customs, and celebrations. Over time, it has undergone lots of developments, especially from Christian tradition and All Hallows’ Eve, one day prior to All Saints’ Day.
Halloween traces back a little over 2,000 years ago to the Celts’ festival of Samhain, mainly kept in Ireland and Scotland. As the festival symbolized the conclusion of harvest and the commencing of winter, “dead souls descended to the earth,” according to Celtic beliefs. To pay heed to this, people lit up fires and made certain sacrifices. As Christianity began to spread, it merged the old festival with All Saints’ Day, November 1, thus providing room for the expressions of both the living and the dead.
It symbolizes life, death, and the cycle of living. It questions the limitations between life and death by instigating thoughts of one’s mortality. People celebrate with the memories of their loved ones who have been called to the afterlife on this day and offer homage to their ancestors in regard to their lives.
Some of the most popular things done on Halloween are ‘Trick-or-Treating’, in which children put on various masks and costumes and go from house to house collecting sweets. On this day, there is a tradition of making ‘Jack-o-Lantern’, related to the old Celtic practice of keeping spirits away. People decorate houses in a scary way, hold themed parties, and listen to scary stories.
Halloween has become a commercially active event in America as houses are decorated very extravagantly, spooky houses can be seen everywhere, and grand celebration events take place throughout the city. Schools and neighbourhoods conduct various Halloween-themed functions wherein people come together to cherish the festival. Abroad, this festival is synonymous with ‘Dia de los Muertos’ or the ‘Day of the Dead’, mainly in Mexico. The people there prepare wonderful altars for their beloved and celebrate their memory.
It is believed that this popular Halloween tradition originated from medieval Britain. Here the poor and children would go from door to door on the day of ‘Hallowmas’ to pray for ‘soul cakes’ (sweets received in exchange for prayers). Over time, this American tradition changed and became famous when children started asking for sweets.
