Halloween, or Halloween, is a well-known Western festival falling on the night of October 31, primarily related to Western Christianity. The festival was to mark All Saints’ Day, or All Hallows’ Day, which is what people call Allhallowtide. The principal objective of Allhallowtide is to celebrate the saints (or Hallows), martyrs, and devoted dead.
Halloween has gradually transpired from the world of religious traditions and transformed into popular culture in which people celebrate this day on themes of ghostly and spooky spirits. It is this day that has a connection with ghostly and supernatural traditions under which people engage in several activities dressed as ghosts.
The history of Halloween is rather old and interesting. This festival has evolved from the old Celtic traditions, especially the Celtic people of Western Europe, specifically Ireland, England, and Northern France. The Celtic people used to have a festival called Samhain, which was on October 31, thus marking the end of harvest and the coming of winter. According to them, spirits used to return to earth on Samhain night and hence, people used to try to avoid those spirits by lighting fires and wearing scary masks.
Celtic belief states that at Samhain, the spirits used to come back to the earth and mingle with humans. Therefore, people would wear masks, so they could look ghostly and hide among the spirits. This further became the modern form of Halloween, where people wear scary costumes and organize parties based on ghostly themes.
Halloween’s main attractions are its entertaining and scary events. These include trick-or-treat, visiting haunted houses, pumpkin carving, costume parties, and ghost tours. Among children, the most popular activity is trick-or-treating, in which they go to the houses of the neighborhood wearing ghost costumes and ask for sweets. If they are not given sweets, they may do some mischief, which gave this tradition the name ‘trick-or-treat’.
Halloween began to gain their roots in the 20th century mainly in America. This festival was taken to America primarily by Irish and Scottish immigrants. Gradually, this festival became very popular among all, and now it has taken the form of a mass celebration. From children to adults, everybody eagerly waits for this day. People participate with great enthusiasm in Halloween parties based on the theme of ghosts and scary stories. Apart from America, the craze of this festival is now increasing in Canada, England, Ireland, Australia, and finally in the metro cities of India.
Though Halloween has not yet gained wide acceptance in India, its craze is gradually increasing in metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, and Noida, especially in schools and colleges where Halloween parties are organized. More so, in schools run by Christian trusts. The children and youth dress up as ghosts on this day and host Halloween parties with friends.
