Jagaddhatri Puja is observed in West Bengal a month after Durga Puja. This festival is celebrated with much grandeur especially at Chandannagar and Krishnanagar. In this puja on the Navami Tithi of Shukla Paksha of Kartik month, Maa Durga is worshipped as Dhatri or nurturer of the world. This year this puja will begin from 8 November and will remain till 11 November 2024, in which the main puja day is 10 November.
Maa Durga is said to have taken a form through Jagadhatri Devi due to the Tridev Brahma, Vishnu, and Shiva so as to teach humility. Durga after killing Mahishasura became boastful which the three gods created so that the goddess removed boastfulness with Jagaddhatri Devi. The goddess who rides on a lion has four arms and three eyes who killed Karindasura that is in the form of an elephant. Karindasura is the symbol of ego and the lion is the symbol of divine power. So, this victory of the Goddess is a message that divine knowledge can conquer ego.
There is also a popular story that King Kansanarayan of Krishnanagar had a dream of the Goddess while he was in prison. The Goddess instructed him to worship her in her form, so that happiness and prosperity remain in his kingdom. The king started the worship as per the Goddess’s orders and this tradition has been going on since then.
In Jagaddhatri Puja, there is decoration of pandals, where big idols are put in place. During the puja, devotees make offerings of garlands of flowers, red clothes, and sweets to the Goddess. Devotees finally complete the puja with aarti after staying fast for the whole day. Prasad is given during this puja, people participating in this pray for protection from negative forces, happiness, and prosperity from the Goddess.
Jagaddhatri Puja is taken out in a grand procession on the night of Vijayadashami in Chandannagar. This year, 69 puja committees will take part in it and the procession will be organized with 245 decorated trucks as against last year. Chinese surfing laser lights and astrology-astronomy theme decorations will make this year’s procession more attractive.
Jagadhatri Puja is a symbol of self-upliftment and spiritual advancement as well as the harmony and oneness of society. It is said that this puja brings good fortune, prosperity in life, and the blessings of Goddess Trishakti (Lakshmi, Kali, Saraswati). This puja also calls out the four big purusharthas – dharma, artha, kama, and moksha.
Thus, Jagaddhatri Puja is not a mere religious rite; it is more a social activity of cultural harmony, culture, and peace. It appears very attractive in Chandannagar, West Bengal and has been undertaken in masses by the people living as well as visitors there.
