Jagaddhatri Puja, celebrated a month after Durga Puja, is also celebrated with great pomp in West Bengal, especially in Chandannagar and its surrounding areas. This puja falls on the ninth day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Kartik, which will be celebrated on November 10 this year, 2024, and will begin on November 8 and end on November 11.
Jagaddhatri means “Dhatri of the world” i.e. protector of the world. This puja worships a form of Goddess Durga who protects the world. According to a legend, after killing Mahishasura, Goddess Durga developed an ego of power. To get rid of this, Lord Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva created Jagaddhatri Devi. Her act kills Karindasura (an elephant-like demon, which symbolises ego). Thus, by her act, it tells that ego can be killed with divine knowledge.
It is said that the goddess appeared in the dreams of Kansanarayana, the king of Chandannagar and Krishnanagar, after which he started this puja. This form of the puja is slightly different from Durga Puja, but similar to it, in which the goddess has four arms and rides on a lion.
In Jagaddhatri Puja, devotees observe fast, offer flowers, red clothes, sweets, and other offerings to the goddess. A procession taken out on the street of Chandannagar with full illumination is carried out for puja in the name of goddess and aarti in her honour after performing it. For special attraction this time Chinese surfing laser lights along with theme based mandap decorations have been done. For the first time, decorations of astronomy and astrology will adorn the area of Baghbazar Chowmatha at Chandannagar. The point behind this event is how astronomy and astrology have shaped our life and society.
Through the performance of this puja, devotees obtain all the wealth, prosperity, good fortune, and even the blessings of the goddess in the tri-shakti form, Lakshmi, Kali and Saraswati. Puja serves to remove negative emotions; it makes one fearless as well as achieve the four aims of life: dharma, artha, kama, and moksha.
All the pujas’ preparations will be done grandly within Chandannagar. In this year’s event on November 11, compared to the 10 puja committees participating, there will be a 69 puja committees involved along with 245 decorated trucks. This time each year, a new record is set and it gets bigger this time also due to huge decorations, lights and music.
