Diwali is celebrated very pompously every year but do you know that before Diwali, there’s another special day? Yeah, Narak Chaturdashi, or often called “Chhoti Diwali,” it is celebrated a day before Diwali every year. This day is not only a day of lighting lamps; it is also about devotion and religious rituals.
The celebration of Narak Chaturdashi is done just to get rid of those negative powers and evil spirits. It is said that on this day, people light lamps so that untimely death can be avoided. As per the tradition, if Yamraj does not come to the house when the elder member of the family lights a lamp in the south direction, this day is also called “Narak Nivaran Chaturdashi”, as it is the day to avoid the sufferings of hell.
This day is important as the worship of Maa Kali is done. She is worshipped on this night so that her appeasement may be sought so that the impact of the bad powers in the house could be minimized. Especially, in West Bengal and Bangladesh, Kali Puja is followed with “Bhoot Chaturdashi” wherein the spirits of the dead come down to the earth to pay a visit to their kin.
The second reason to celebrate Narak Chaturdashi is the killing of Narakasura by Lord Krishna. On this day, Lord Krishna had freed 16,000 girls from the prison of Narakasura. That’s why people light lamps in the name of Yamraj to protect them on this day.
This year Narak Chaturdashi will fall on 31st October 2024. Chaturdashi Tithi will begin at 1:15 pm on 30th October and end at 3:52 pm on 31st October. On this day, Abhyanga snan is also important, which strengthens the belief that it saves a person from going to hell.
We all should celebrate this day with devotion and reverence, understanding the importance of this day. Come, on this Narak Chaturdashi let us all remove negativity from our lives by lighting lamps in our homes and praying to gods and goddesses.
