New Year’s Eve is the eve of new year celebrated each year on December 31. It’s the day when we bid farewell to the old and welcome the new. All over the world, people celebrate in different ways and the significance that it holds dates back thousands of years.
New Year’s Eve is marked on the last day of the Gregorian calendar. That comes on December 31. Because of the history and rich cultural variety behind it, the way this day was traditionally followed is centuries old. As of early days, it used to be marked not because of any particular fixed calendar but was differently celebrated according to regions on various dates.
The Gregorian calendar used today was introduced in the year 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. Under the new calendar, the first day of the year was made on January 1st; however, in old calendars, the year began with April. The reason for changing this was to ensure there was a standard calendar that could be implemented in any part of the world.
The Gregorian calendar replaced the earlier Julian calendar, established by the Roman emperor Julius Caesar in 44 BC. This calendar was based on the sun’s position, whereas all older calendars were based on the moon’s position. The calendar was reformed in 1582, by discarding the days of the old calendar and starting the year from January 1.
This change had no astronomical basis, but was based on the worship of the Roman god Janus, the god of gates and beginnings. January 1 was chosen as the beginning of the new year in honor of Janus.
On New Year’s Eve people assemble for celebrating the final day of the year. On this day different types of festivity, party, ceremony and other related rituals are scheduled. On New Year’s Eve people may attend masses at midnight in the churches whereas other go to public parks or some areas like in New York, Times Square, and in London’s Trafalgar Square, count the last remaining seconds of the year there.
At midnight, when the clock strikes 12, people hug, kiss and wish each other a “Happy New Year”. This time is also marked by the singing of “Auld Lang Syne”, a traditional Scottish song that is sung on New Year’s Eve around the world.
