New Year’s Eve is celebrated on December 31, which marks the last day of the year. This day is full of mixed emotions for all of us. On the one hand, it allows us to reflect on the events of the past year, on the other hand, it also symbolizes hopes and excitement about the beginning of the new year. On this day people say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new year, but do you know why New Year’s Eve and New Year are celebrated on January 1?
The reason for celebrating this day and the history behind it is also very interesting.
The celebration of New Year’s Eve, December 31, has a long history associated with it. Earlier, every culture and civilization had its own calendar, the main purpose of which was to determine time. But the Gregorian calendar, which we are following these days, is recognized all over the world for determining time. This calendar was introduced in Rome by Pope Gregory XIII in the year 1582.
Before the Gregorian calendar was adopted, the Roman calendar was based on the lunar calendar, which was used to calculate the month and year. Pope Gregory XIII changed this to the solar calendar. During this time, January 1 was chosen as the beginning of the New Year. This decision was not based on any astronomical basis but was taken in honour of the ancient Roman god Janus. He was the god of gates and beginnings. Thus, January 1 became the start of the New Year.
Under the Gregorian calendar, the New Year starts on January 1 and always takes place every year at the end of the night on December 31, which we also refer to as “New Year’s Eve”. People say goodbye to the last year and greet a new year with hope and expectations.
New Year’s Eve is different for everyone. While others celebrate by attending church services, others gather in public places such as Times Square in New York or Trafalgar Square in London, where they bid farewell to the old year and count down the clock to the new year. Other people have small house parties, while others go to grand events that usually have fireworks and dancing.
