During a new a interview with Celebs Go Dating‘s Paul Brunson for his We Need To Talk podcast, former Towie star Pete talked about his childhood.
He opened up about a time that his mother almost took her own life, and he felt he “wasn’t enough” for her”.
Pete revealed his mum Tracey was going through a “dark time” after the end of her marriage to his dad.
Pete’s parents divorced when he was 11-years-old.
Welling up, he said: “I just felt like if I had been able to ease her pain, not fix them being back together, because it was the right thing they weren’t together, but I just felt like if I had been there more for them, not just as a son but as a friend.
“To be in that darker place that my mum was, and my dad having to leave, if they had just felt someone was there.”
During the same interview, Pete also broke his silence on girlfriend Maura Higgins.
When asked about her, he said: “Maura and I have known each other for a long time now… about six years.
“We have the same sense of humour, she’s super intelligent and I think that is sometimes something that people don’t realise about Maura.
“She’s incredibly witty. We have always been there for each other for the past six years at a distance.”
But Pete continued: “It’s different now. We spend more time together now than we did before. My relationship with her is that I think she’s a great person and I would hope that she thinks I’m alright.”
Despite Pete’s high praise, Maura recently admitted she has “terrible” taste in men.
She went on to say “it would be lovely” to be in love, as she opened up to The Times about her dating life.
Maura continued to say she’s “happy now,” when asked whether or not she’s in love.
And on the topic of Pete, Maura shared: “I don’t feel like I need a man. But I’ll date, and I’ll see where something goes, and if it happens, it happens.”
It comes after Pete did an interview with The Times himself, and revealed why he has never been in a long term romance.
He said: “[Settling down] is the bit I just can’t do.
“The minute a relationship gets to the point where I seem to be having an impact on someone’s life, it scares the s*** out of me.”
