A NEW return policy at Home Depot has caused frustration among shoppers.
Some even threatened to boycott the home improvement retailer for good after it supposedly led to their refunds being turned away.

“Well, Home Depot just lost a huge customer,” a particularly peeved customer wrote in a thread on Reddit.
“I will never shop there again and I’m going to warn all of you to beware.”
They provided a detailed explanation of their previously positive history with Home Depot over the years.
The shopper frequently went to the retailer for all the necessary building materials to complete multiple projects, especially for remodels.
They were recently in the middle of a remodel and lost some receipts for a pair of Christmas lights they’d bought to put around their home.
“As you can imagine, during a remodel, things get chaotic, and sometimes you misplace receipts,” they wrote.
After opening the set of string Christmas lights, only half of them would work — probably an issue with the wiring.
The customer said they took the lights back to Home Depot less than two weeks after the purchase but ran into issues with the misplaced receipt.
CREDIT DENIED
To work with staff, they offered their driver’s license to verify their identity and said they’d take store credit instead of cash to use on future projects.
Still, that wasn’t enough because of Home Depot’s alleged new addition to its return policy.
“The associate told me that my return was denied because their new return policy limits the amount of returns you can make without a receipt in your lifetime,” the shopper claimed.
Home Depot’s return policy states that items purchased with a credit card, debit card, or check will be accepted within 90 days of the transaction.
Without a receipt, a government-issued photo ID is required to verify, as the shopper seemingly provided.
“Returns without a receipt may be refunded as store credit at the lowest advertised price,” the policy reads.
Home Depot Items You Can’t Return
Most merchandise bought at Home Depot is eligible for a return and a refund within 90 days of purchase. There are, however, some exceptions:
- Major appliances
- Custom products (paint, blinds, etc.)
- Special order products
- Generators
- Delivery, labor, and installation services
- Product samples

“The return is also subject to approval by the third-party refund verification system.”
There is no clear identifier noting the limit on returned items without receipts, but it could be implemented on a store-by-store basis or hasn’t been updated on Home Depot’s website yet.

SECURITY ADD-ON
Additionally, a former Home Depot worker responded to the frustrated customer in the Reddit thread and claimed it was not policy.
“Previous HD employee. It’s not an HD policy. They use a company called TRE (The Retail Equation),” the staffer wrote.
“It tracks all returns done using your driver’s license and flags excessive or suspicious returns.”
They also added that the customer could call The Retail Equation or check online for a full report and attempt to get it resolved.
Home Depot has also caught backlash from shoppers recently over other issues.
A customer claimed they waited “25mins to pick up paint” recently that had a major problem once opened.
Someone else cited payment method problems.
