How Indian Americans Are Poised to Vote in 2024

The Democrats are still the party of choice for Indian-origin voters—with 6 in 10 planning to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris—though former President Donald Trump has made some gains since 2020 with the United States’ wealthiest and second-largest immigrant group. That’s according to a new survey of more than 700 Indian Americans conducted between Sept. 18 and Oct. 15 by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

This is the survey’s second edition, with the first taking place ahead of the 2020 election. Just under half of respondents this year identified as Democrats, compared with 56 percent in 2020, the authors wrote, with the number of independents growing. Roughly a third of respondents this time said they would vote for Trump—up from 22 percent four years ago and driven largely by young men

Indian-origin citizens comprise a relatively small but rapidly growing slice of the U.S. electorate—there are a little over 5 million Indian Americans in the United States, roughly half of whom are estimated to be eligible to vote. They now comprise the second-largest immigrant group in the country and by far the wealthiest, making them a key group in an election likely to be decided by a few tens of thousands of swing-state votes.
