Across Florida, officials at all levels of government have been weighing when to order evacuations for Hurricane Milton, which is expected to hit the state as an extremely large and powerful hurricane this week.
Kevin Guthrie, Florida’s emergency management director, urged people to leave vulnerable areas on Monday, rather than wait any longer. “If your plan calls for you to evacuate, you should do so today,” he said.
Gov. Ron DeSantis warned on Monday that uncertainty over Milton’s precise path would lead to evacuations over a wide area, especially because the memory of Hurricane Ian was still fresh in Southwest Florida. That storm killed 150 people in 2022, some of whom did not heed calls to evacuate to the mainland from barrier-island communities.
“If we knew exactly where it’s going to hit, we probably would evacuate fewer people,” Mr. DeSantis said, “but we don’t know that.”
