I tried Morrisons Christmas showstoppers including lobster, truffles and an affordable Champagne alternative

CHRISTMAS is about feasting on mounds of delicious food – so I tried some of Morrisons’ festive fare to dig out the showstoppers you need to wow guests this year.

The supermarket is bringing out more than 500 special lines of Christmas delights to tempt taste buds, and I munched my way through some of these to deliver a verdict on what should add to your shopping basket.

In my book, the only way to kick off the party spirit is with a glass of bubbles.

I’ve always been Prosecco kind of gal, but Morrisons‘ The Best Cremant De Limoux Rose, for £12.50, has me converted.

It’s an elegant drink and perfect for giving Christmas a bit of added sparkle without splashing out on procey bottles of fizz.

Not as dry as Champagne nor as sweet as prosecco I’ll definitely be stocking up on a bottle or two for the festive period.

A Christmas party is not complete without canapes and if you are throwing a bash this year, you’ll want some titbits that are impressive and tasty that can be served with little effort.

Morrisons’ range of canapes is due to hit stores on November 27, my hands down favourite was The Best prawn toast with ponzu dip, £6. I promise you won’t be disappointed by these bitesize treats.

The range also includes pork belly bites with maple bbq sauce and fondue cheese bites, £6 each or you can get three for the price of two when they launch.

Or if you just want some posh crisps to serve, the camemburt and roast garlic chutney flavour, £1.35, hit the mark.

Morrions is also bringing out a three cheese tear and share Christmas tree pastry on December 16, £7.50, which is a great addition to more casual get-togethers over Christmas.

I also sampled numerous courses designed to create a showstopping dinner at home.

Morrisons said this year’s range of festive food has focused on bringing to life the classics we all know and love rather than experimenting with leftfield combinations.

The Best cherry bakewell mince pies, £2.75 for four, are a perfect example of this.

You’ll also find all the trimmings such as pigs in blankets, £3.25, spiced red cabbage, £2, and goose fat roast potatoes, £4.

My favourite twist on a seasonal delight, however, was put together by chef specially for Morrisons. It was the humble brussell sprout chopped and served with Caeser dressing as an alternative take on the classic salad. If you’re looking for an antidote to all the rich food around in December with a special season nod, this is worth a try at home.

I was also impressed by Morrisons The Best lobster tails, £14, served alongside a dollop of The Best prawn cocktail sauce, £1.50.

I’d never usually attempt to cook lobster at home, but this feels like a failsafe and easy way to do it – and the outcome is delicious as well. And what better way to make Christmas feel special than serving a course of lobster.

Most of us will be tucking into turkey on December 25, but The Best British 30 day matured sirloin joint, £30/kg, was a mouthwatering alternative main.

You could also serve it on Christmas eve or for New Years Eve as a special treat.

I also sampled The Best sticky cascade toffee pudding, £8 (serves six), the shimmering sauce was delicious and the little crunchy balls were a special added touch for this classic, which will be available from December 13.

If you have kids the Santa’s sleigh chocolate mousse, £6 (serves five), is sure to be a hit at the table and it’s something that I have on my own list for Christmas Day.

For more adult, palettes I love the passionfruit martini spin on panettone, £6.50.

If you are looking for a special treat to gift, Morrisons The Best Marc De Champagne Truffles, £5, are a taste sensation and sweeten anyone’s festive period.

How to save money on Christmas shopping

Consumer reporter Sam Walker reveals how you can save money on your Christmas shopping.

Limit the amount of presents – buying presents for all your family and friends can cost a bomb.

Instead, why not organise a Secret Santa between your inner circles so you’re not having to buy multiple presents.

Plan ahead – if you’ve got the stamina and budget, it’s worth buying your Christmas presents for the following year in the January sales.

Make sure you shop around for the best deals by using price comparison sites so you’re not forking out more than you should though.

Buy in Boxing Day sales – some retailers start their main Christmas sales early so you can actually snap up a bargain before December 25.

Delivery may cost you a bit more, but it can be worth it if the savings are decent.

Shop via outlet stores – you can save loads of money shopping via outlet stores like Amazon Warehouse or Office Offcuts.

They work by selling returned or slightly damaged products at a discounted rate, but usually any wear and tear is minor.
