Watt has been a regular on the popular ESPN show since retiring from football in 2022.
The 35-year-old was excited to talk about Arizona Cardinals safety Budda Baker after the deadline closed on Tuesday.
But in his enthusiasm, he accidentally committed a cardinal sin on McAfee’s broadcast.
McAfee’s show is shown live on ESPN from midday to 2pm, before continuing for another hour on YouTube.
The countdown to the show’s end on live TV is shown at the bottom of the screen.
McAfee usually wraps things up for ESPN viewers in good time.
As Watt began making his Baker take, he had 30 seconds left on the clock and was supposed to seamlessly hand over to SportsCenter.
However, he appeared to completely forget, ploughing forward with his take and being abruptly cut off mid-sentence for those watching on ESPN feeds.
“What did I do?” asked the former D-lineman, as McAfee held his hands up in mock confusion.
“Can you not see the countdown clock at the bottom of your screen?” laughed McAfee’s co-host AJ Hawk.
“It was a great take and you love Budda,” continued McAfee.
“You had a potential home run throw there.”
“I do look forward to [doing the handover],” admitted a crestfallen Watt, who bowed his head before apologizing to his laughing colleagues.
“I’ve never had the opportunity, the ball has not been in my hands.
“What a disaster. I’m sorry, I’m sorry.”
Pat McAfee’s playing days
Pat McAfee enjoyed a hugely successful stint before switching to a career in the media.
The talk show star played punter in the NFL for eight seasons from 2009 to 2016.
He was a seventh round NFL Draft pick in 2009 out of West Virginia and spent his entire career with the Indianapolis Colts.
The ex-punter was named to the Pro Bowl in 2014 and 2016, and he was a first team All-Pro in 2014, as well.
McAfee owns the unique NFL record of the highest career net average punting yards with 41.4 yards while his longest ever punt was 74.
“CMON JJ get it together,” laughed one fan on X in response to the clip.
“He wasn’t even close!” commented another.
“This was HILARIOUS,” added a third.
“Pat was begging him to stop talking,” giggled a fourth.
You can catch The Pat McAfee Show live on ESPN every weekday from midday ET.
