National Farmers Day is celebrated every year on 23 December in India. This day is dedicated to honoring the contribution of farmers and recognizing their role. Farmers Day is also known as ‘Kisan Diwas’ or ‘Kisan Diwas’. This day is celebrated to commemorate the birth anniversary of the fifth Prime Minister of India, Chaudhary Charan Singh. Chaudhary Charan Singh fought for the rights of farmers and took many important steps to improve their condition.
The history of National Farmers Day begins from 2001 when the Government of India declared 23 December, the birth anniversary of Chaudhary Charan Singh, as Farmers Day. Chaudhary Charan Singh made agriculture and the welfare of farmers the purpose of his life. He implemented many important reforms like land reforms, irrigation system and minimum support price (MSP).
Chaudhary Charan Singh was born on 23 December 1902 in Meerut district of Uttar Pradesh Noorpur village. He has been the most prominent leader for the rights of farmers and believed that if the development of the country is not possible, there will not be any development in farmers too. Therefore, he tried to bring change in all policies in an attempt to modernize agriculture and make the people dependent in it.
India is an agricultural country. The population is 50% reliant on agriculture, and it continues to remain a sector that feeds the majority of the population. Agriculture provides for the food security of India besides significantly contributing to the national economy. Agriculture forms 15% of the total gross value added (GVA) for the year 2022-23.
The main objective of Kisan Diwas is to recognize the contribution of farmers and highlight the challenges they face. Moreover, on this day, there is a platform to encourage farmers to take up the latest technologies and sustainable agricultural practices in the field of agriculture.
The farmer is often called Annadaata or Dharti Putra. This day honors their relentless hard work. Whether rich or poor, every person depends on the farmer for their everyday needs.
On Kisan Diwas, it is reminded that farmers are the backbone of the country’s economy and overall development is impossible without their welfare.
