Kohl’s to follow JCPenney and Macy’s out of popular shopping mall after bosses announce 27 locations set to close

KOHL’S is slated to follow the lead of JCPenney and Macy’s as it begins the closure process at a once popular shopping mall.

The Kohl’s shutter in Spring Hill Mall is just one of over two dozen locations the company recently announced.

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JANUARY 13: People walk through Macy's store in downtown Brooklyn after the company announced it was closing the store along with over 60 others on January 13, 2025 in New York City. Macy's, once the nation's premier department store, has struggled in recent years with the competition from online retailers and discount stores such as Walmart. Macy's has said that the closures would allow them to prioritize its roughly 350 Macy’s remaining locations. (Photo by Spencer Platt/Getty Images)

A Kohl’s in Illinois stands as the last remaining store at the formerly popular Spring Hill Mall in West Dundee and Carpentersville – around 45 miles from Chicago.

However, Kohl’s executives have slated the location for closure as part of a string of 27 shutdowns nationwide.

Located at 3000 Spring Hill Ring Road, the Kohl’s store will close its doors by April, according to the company’s announcement earlier this month.

Another Kohl’s in the Chicago suburbs, located in Plainfield, is also set to close this spring.

Alongside the 25 other Kohl’s stores on the list, both Illinois locations were cited as “underperforming” by the department store chain.

“We always take these decisions very seriously,” said Tom Kingsbury, Kohl’s CEO.

“As we continue to build on our long-term growth strategy, it is important that we also take difficult but necessary actions to support the health and future of our business for our customers and our teams.”

The 27 closures across 22 states make up less than 3% of Kohl’s 1,150 locations.

ANCHORS AWEIGH

Opened in 1980, Spring Hill Mall closed last spring along with all the stores inside, except for a Cinemark movie theater and the Kohl’s store.

Fencing was put around the mall and parking lots in late spring, although shoppers could still access Kohl’s and Cinemark.

Demolition of the Spring Hill Mall began in the summer of last year as West Dundee officials hoped to redevelop the space.

West Dundee ultimately purchased what remained of the Spring Hill Mall, including the Cinemark theater, for $7 million.

The Kohl’s store was not part of the acquisition, and its closure marks the departure of the final store at the mall.

It was an anchor store at the Spring Hill Mall, alongside the JCPenney and Macy’s stores that once stood at the shopping center.

The JCPenney location opened in 1983 as one of the mall’s original anchors, functioning as one of West Dundee’s biggest money-makers.

However, to streamline operations and boost profits, the store was shut down in 2011.

Macy’s was also formerly an anchor store at the Spring Hill Mall, taking its leave in 2020.

The retailer shuttered the store as part of a larger strategy to close underperforming locations, focusing its resources on more profitable ones.

“Macy’s is proud to have served the Dundee community over the past 40 years,” the company said at the time.

Many retail giants are struggling to stay afloat in today’s tough retail climate.

For example, the Macy’s CEO addressed 150 closures and admitted that its stores “should be better.”

Plus, an iconic discount retailer and TJ Maxx rival will close down two locations in the same state – and “saddened” fans found by note.
