Lindsay Lohan is Going Back to Her Roots

Is it us, or is Lindsay Lohan becoming one of our favorite street style and beauty icons?

From her perfectly poised cream pleated dress with soft blonde curls at the US Open to her leather trench and slicked back pony at Paris Fashion week, the 38-year-old has proven that she can execute nearly any trend, and do it flawlessly.

Flawless is also the word that comes to my mind when I first see Lohan over Zoom. Her hair, which is a light honey blonde with just a tiny hint of her signature red, waterfalls down her shoulders in enviable waves. When I compliment her on how good it looks, she gives a friendly laugh.

“It’s super fresh and clean today, so thank you,” she says.

Like all the best icons, Lohan isn’t afraid to play homage to the classic parts her fans know her for. In a new campaign for Nexxus, Lohan demonstrates the versatility of the brand’s 11-piece styling line by using its products to transform into several characters from her first big role, The Parent Trap. Yes, Camp Walden fans, this is our time.

In the spot, Lohan channels both twins (Hallie and Annie, of course) and even the most deliciously evil and fantastic stepmother in movie history, Meredith Blake (wearing Blake’s signature black and white large-brimmed hat). Lohan even surprised the team on set by going into full Annie James mode.

“I was like, I think I’m just going to do a British accent. It’s just going to be better this way,” she says.

While Lohan makes full glam look effortless, behind the scenes she’s doing the same balance as many women her age. She’s juggling working (she just wrapped the sequel to Freaky Friday with Jamie Lee Curtis and has a Netflix holiday movie, Our Little Secret coming out in November) and being a first-time mom to her son Luai, who turned 1 in July. When I ask Lohan what her favorite part of parenthood right now is, her eyes light up.

“All of it. He’s changing so much right now at this age, so every second, it’s something new and exciting,” she says.

Ahead, Lohan shares her best tips for feeling and looking glam, whether in work mode or mom mode, in this edition of Glamour’s Big Beauty Questions.

Glamour: As a former 10-year-old mega-stan of The Parent Trap, I love the callbacks in this ad. How’d it come about?

Lindsay Lohan: I think it was a perfect way to showcase all of the products with Nexxus that I love. We looked at it as a perfect opportunity to get nostalgic there because the characters are so different and their styles are so different, and then I’m different from them in life. So it was nice and it worked perfectly.

You’re partnering with Nexxus to highlight their 11-piece styling line that you can use to create a variety of hairstyles. But which of the products is your absolute go-to?

The hair oil serum. It’s just good. It keeps your hair healthy, and that’s important because when we’re putting all this other stuff in our hair…we need to give our hair a break and give it some love back.

We at Glamour have been loving your street style lately—from the US Open to Paris Fashion Week. What’s your current fashion philosophy?

I’ve always worn things that I want to be comfortable in. That’s always been a big deal for me. I think over the years, maybe my style has become a bit more modest than it used to be, and I’m sure that comes with being a mom also. Over time, you’re like, I’m going to wear a little more. I always like to keep it classic and chic, but comfortable. That’s always my goal with everything that I wear.

I only really like to wear heels now if it’s like a heeled boot or if it’s to an event or to a nice dinner with my husband [Bader Shammas]. Other than that, I’d rather be in flats. I’m running around all the time after my son, so I want to keep it safe.

What are your favorite beauty products right now when you’re in mom mode?

The Nexus Slick Stick has been really helpful to me because a lot of the time I just need to throw my hair back. I can just put it in a low bun and then get a clean, nice, slick back look. So that’s really helpful. And if I have a nice curl in, and I want it to stay, I use the XXL spray, and that’s helpful. I just need things to stay in place and not move so much, so I’m not worrying about me and I’m more focused on my son.

I’m always trying to find a way to look put together while I’m out with my 2-year-old that makes me feel confident but also isn’t uncomfortable. Any tips?

I always need a hair tie. If I don’t have a hair tie when I leave the house, I’m in trouble. I always take the time in the morning to let myself feel refreshed. I need a really cold towel in the morning when I wake up, I put it on my face, rinse, take that time, my time in the shower, and then I feel like I can start the day. And when I’m with [my son], it’s usually jeans and a T-shirt or leggings and a T-shirt.

You’re a great example of juggling being a new mom and career, and a lot of our readers are in a similar life stage. How do you strike that balance?

I think it’s always important to find that time when you can for yourself and know that it’s okay to feel that panic…I think we get so worried like, well, what’s going to happen next? Is this going to happen tomorrow? Did I spend enough time? Was I there or not? Was I this? There’s so many what ifs, and I feel like we’re constantly judging ourselves and feeling like we’re not enough and guilting ourselves into things. It’s not necessary because it’s just your love for your child…so just give yourself a pat on the back and know you’re doing a great job.

What are you really excited about right now work-wise?

I’m excited for Our Little Secret to come out in November. It’s a really fun movie…my character is a girl who is coming back from London to her hometown and is currently dating someone. She goes to meet his family and bumps into her ex.

I love the projects you’ve been picking lately. What is making you gravitate toward holiday movies and rom-coms right now?

I just wasn’t seeing a lot of fun, happy movies like that that were just easy to watch. I myself couldn’t find them. I was finding myself watching older movies, and I like making people laugh.

I want to make people smile, and I want them to go to the movie theater and escape whatever’s going on in their world for a moment and just enjoy themselves. So if I read a script like that, I gravitate towards that.
