Conn’s was a home goods chain operated in 15 states, employing over 4,000 people.
The store in Slidell, Louisiana, about 40 minutes from New Orleans, is closing at the North Shore Square Mall.
Residents told local Fox News outlet WVUE that they used to drive out of town to shop at the Conn’s store.
“It has certainly changed,” said St. Tammany Parish president Mike Cooper in an interview.
He added that he has been working for years with city leadership and the mall’s owners to revitalize the area.
“I don’t know of any set plans, but it is poised in a great location, close to the hotels and the airport,” he said.
The inside of the mall is currently closed, and after Conn’s closes, only AtHome and Dillard’s will remain as anchor stores.
BANKRUPTCY BLUES
The company is closing all of its stores after 134 years in business.
Conn’s is based in Texas but operates locations in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.
The retail chain initially planned to close 73 locations across these states, but later decided toclose all of its over 170 locations.
Seventy Texas locations will close, along with 20 Florida stores, and 12 North Carolina and 11 Louisiana locations.
Conn’s has faced three years of losses; some shoppers blamed that on the store’s prices.
A Facebook user commented on a post announcing the closures, saying the items were “way overpriced.”
“Have been to the one in Daytona Beach looking for a few things, from flooring to furniture to appliances. Was out of my price range or didn’t have what I was looking for,” they wrote.

“Sad to say, this closing isn’t a surprise. I wish their employees luck.”
Conn’s hoped to improve its standings in December by purchasing home goods chain WS Badcock, which operates as Badcock Home Furniture & More.
Despite upping its portfolio, Conn’s had a 7.8% drop in revenue from 2023, per an earnings call in April.
Under the bankruptcy filing, 35 Badcock stores will close as well.
Several different types of retailers are facing closures.
A prominent grocery chain is closing 31 locations over the next few weeks.
