Major Mike McCarthy contract update as Dallas Cowboys and head coach ‘run out of time’ to agree new deal

MIKE McCarthy will leave the Dallas Cowboys this week, it has been reported.

The head coach has been in charge of the team since 2020 and overseen three winning seasons.

But his contract expires this week and there have been extensive talks about a new deal.

According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, those discussions have come to nothing.

Pelissero wrote on X, “Mike McCarthy is out as Cowboys coach.

“The sides couldn’t agree on length of contract and McCarthy will pursue other opportunities.

“He leaves Dallas with a winning record and three playoff appearances.”

Pelissero also reported that meetings were held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday last week.

Owner Jerry Jones, McCarthy and Cowboys executives discussed the 2024 season and also looked ahead to 2025.

But McCarthy’s contract expired on January 14.

And it seems the parties have failed to agree on a new deal for 2025.

It leaves McCarthy out of a job and free to negotiate with other teams from Tuesday.

But he has missed out on a round of interviews that already took place with other teams that are looking for coaches.

And the Cowboys are behind their rivals in interviewing new coaches – such as Mike Vrabel who has already agreed to be the next New England Patriots leader.

Deion Sanders has been linked with the Dallas Cowboys but insists he’s happy at the Colorado Buffaloes.

McCarthy has been head coach of the Cowboys since 2020.

He has led them to a 12-5 record and the playoffs three years running.

‘Match made in heaven’

Deion Sanders becoming head coach of the Dallas Cowboys is a match made in heaven.

It’s been 30 years now since the Cowboys last won a Super Bowl and something has to change.

This is “America’s Team,” but it has become a laughing stock and needs someone to restore them to their past glory.

That candidate who takes over from Mike McCarthy at head coach must have some magic and inspiration.

Step forward, Deion Sanders.

Sanders, 57, is one of the best players to have ever stepped on the field and was on Dallas’ team the last time they won a Super Bowl.

He is quite literally ‘Prime Time’ and that spark is exactly what the Cowboys need.

As for Deion, now is the perfect time for him to move on as well.

He has taken the Buffaloes to new heights both in terms of results and popularity.

His son, Colorado Buffaloes quarterback Shedeur Sanders, is also in his senior year in college.

Sanders could probably land a head coaching job on a legitimate national championship contender if he wants to stay in college.

But a chance to coach the Dallas Cowboys may not come calling again.

But this season they slipped to 3-7 with a string of heavy defeats at home.

Jones faced calls to sack McCarthy with Dallas’ playoff hopes all but extinguished before Thanksgiving.

The Cowboys staged a mini-revival with four wins in five.

But back-to-back defeats to end the season means they finished 7-10 and third in the NFC East.

McCarthy spent 12 years with the Green Bay Packers and won the Super Bowl in 2010.
