According to research by automobile experts Ovoko, who used figures from the Department for Transport over nearly ten years, the top three most dangerous areas are all located in Lancashire.

At number one is Blackpool, which saw 63.83 pedestrian casualties per 100,000 people across the 2013-2022 period.

A total of 906 accidents took place in the area during this time – with 2013, 2015 and 2020 logging the highest yearly figures.

And, there was an alarming increase between 2020 and 2022 – from 52 to 90.

The second more dangerous area for pedestrians is Liverpool, with 60.82 casualties per 100,000 people.

A staggering 315 incidents took place in 2022, up from 173 in 2020 – a whopping 82 per cent increase.

This is followed closely by Blackburn, with 59.99 per 100,000 of the population.

Despite its high position in the rankings, Blackburn is the only location on the entire list to have seen a decrease in casualties between 2020 and 2022.

Although, it wasn’t by much – from 69 down to 60.

Moving away from the northeast, London comes next – with 59.3 accidents per 100,000 people.

And keen walkers should also beware of Nottingham at number five, with 59.13 per the same number.

Across the county lines, Birmingham recorded 54.23 casualties per 100,000 people – while on the south coast, Brighton saw 53.87.

Back up north, 49.76 people per 100,000 were involved in issues in Bradford – and 48.97 in Newcastle.

And Luton comes in as the tenth most dangerous area – with 48.46 incidents per 100,000.

In light of the figures, a spokesperson from Ovoko told the Blackpool Gazette how crossing the street in the UK can feel putting your life in your hands.

They said: “Dangerous pedestrian areas in the UK are a growing concern, as more people rely on walking in busy towns and cities.

“In some areas, crossing the street can feel like a gamble, with fast-moving traffic, unclear signage, and limited crossings creating a hazardous environment for walkers.”

The figures come following a number of pedestrian deaths already this year.

Aidan Chapman, 25, sadly passed away after a driver ploughed through pedestrians on the wrong side of the road in central London on New Year’s Eve.

Meanwhile, footballer Darryl Tomlinson, known as Daz, also died after being hit by a car, with his club paying tribute to the “easy going lad” with a “heart of gold”.
