Martin Lewis recreates romantic proposal to glam wife Lara on new ITV show – but viewers are left baffled

MARTIN Lewis fans were treated to a rare insight into his romantic life on his new stat-filled documentary.

The 52-year-old was fronting the show Martin Lewis: How to Win at Board Games on ITV designed to get the nation ready for a festive season of board game battles.

It was a new way to combine Martin’s passions for statistics, numbers and sitting down to play a traditional board game.

Various versions were featured in the show including Monopoly, Risk, Connect 4 and backgammon with Martin providing tips and advice on how best to tackle each family favourite.

But it was Martin’s love for Scrabble which really gave viewers a little insight into his personal life.

Lara Lewington, Martin’s wife, made a rare appearance with him, setting up the word based game and revealing that the pair compete regularly.

Scrabble has formed such an important part of their life that Martin chose the game to help him propose, as Lara explained.

The couple have been married since 2009 and the former Five News presenter described how Martin popped the question.

She said: “Martin proposed to me on a Scrabble set and once he got the letters out I thought he had too many letters because will you marry me is more than seven letters.”

She continued: “So I said ‘what are you doing? You’ve got too many letters on the board’ but he said ‘wait just wait’ and then of course he put them down and I felt bad because I accused him of cheating.”

Martin went on to explain that he’s actually kept a spreadsheet of every single game that he and Lara have played since they met, except for the first 17 games because that would have been “a little bit weird.”

The couple appeared very at ease playing against each other as Martin beat his stunning partner, averaging 54 points a turn at one point.

Away from the romantic Scrabble board though it seems that ITV viewers weren’t all head over heels with the gaming special.

One viewer cheekily said: “Martin Lewis on my tele for an whole hour, giving out tips on how to win at board games this Christmas. I can tell you that in under 2 seconds, mate. Cheat.”

Another seemed upset at the night’s offerings across the channels: “A week before Christmas, and one main channel is showing a sports awards ceremony, while the other features Martin Lewis teaching you how to win at board games. F*** MY LIFE! I might as well dig out my 1982 copy of the Radio Times to see what’s on at 9pm.

A further commented: “What is this abomination of a TV program?!! #martinlewis How to win at board games?!!!”

Martin Lewis’ career so far

By Conor O’Brien

Financial journalist and presenter Martin Lewis has had a career spanning three decades.

He’s a familiar face on television, appearing on various shows for ITV.

Let’s take a look at some of Martin’s most notable achievements so far.

  • MoneySavingExpert.com: Martin founded this finance information website in February 2003. It is intended to provide information on ways for people to save money. Money Supermarket bought the site in September 2012, with Martin taking on a executive chairman role.
  • The Martin Lewis Money Show: Debuting in September 2012, this current affairs show covers personal finance. It is presented by Martin and a co-host. Initially, this was Saira Khan but more recently, Angelica Bell has stepped into the role.
  • This Morning: Martin has appeared on the daytime show since 2007. He serves as the programme’s Financial expert.
  • Good Morning Britain: Similarly, Martin fulfils a role as Money Saving Expert on ITV’s Good Morning Britain. He first joined the programme in 2021.

But plenty of people were ‘on board’ with Martin’s new show saying: “We’re loving it so far – ‘we often teach children the rules of the game rather than how to play the game’ is so true about way more than Connect4!”

Others agreed saying: “Thoroughly enjoyed every minute!! I’d love to see more anytime please Martin!”

As well as his new board game show, the Money Saving Expert has recently announced he’ll also be trying out another new role, appearing on a special edition of Taskmaster.
